I dont like nearly any horror movies unless you take out most of the suspense. I always just feel stressed out when I watch them. The last horror movie i watched entirely was Bird Box and I hated it, but I had to watch it because that is what everyone else was doing. I know Bird Box was a bad movie in general but everything I have seen from makes me feel the same way.

I'm not even sure I could call it fear, just anxiety without any kind of adrenaline like a roller coaster has to make it fun. I guess those are kind of the same thing but just watching people suffer with the idea of having no idea what is going on is stressful.

But jumpscares can be used effectively to actually scare people, not just "startle" them. No one calls Dr. Mann's death, Winkie's hobo or the ending of Enemy bad scenes, because they're not. Even though they may startle people. Being startling doesn't mean a scene is bad, and can actually cause genuine fright. In fact jumpscares work in tandem with the "slow burn" atmosphere you probably prefer. They complement each other. If something is just a loud noise, no one is going to think the scene is memorable or scary. But if given proper horrific context that effectively unsettles the audience then the jumpscare is good. There are many movies like Lake Mungo, BBBitch, Hereditary, where there's dreadful atmosphere for like 3 minutes. But it cuts to the next scene and you're left with no scares. There's no sense building up a horror movie if there's no scary payoff anywhere. It just becomes a waste of time.

tl;dr Jumpscares can be done well and are not inherently bad.

Never said that. Just claiming that a jumpscare is not the only way how to execute the horror. The slow corruption of the family serves as great execution for horror. There are evidences of evil throughout the whole movie that build up the atmosphere and emphasize the dread and are their devastating result is shown in the climax. Instead of making weak boo every minute, there is one great shock in the end and so the dread endures not even throughout but also after the movie.

I used to be scared by horror movies as a child, but as I grew up I realized that real life is more horrifying than anything you could record on film or write in a book. Jump scares and gore just make me laugh at this point, everyone thinks I'm insane but they don't understand how cheesy and silly they are, The Exorcist was a comedy last I saw it and Dawn of the Dead is actually a quite comfy movie.
