Instead, they decided to have her break like a twig in the span of one episode and become an entirely different character overnight. This should have been one of the most tragic character arcs in television history. Instead, it is tragic for a completely different reason now.

Seasons 1-3 and maybe 4 were about characters actually living in feudal society. Their characters reflected their roles in society, they were one and the same.
In seasons 5-8 feudal roles went out the window. Everyone was going somewhere to acheive some mission. Like they were just cosplaying and using their surroundings to their advantage.

Bro tip: When I heard around the time season 3 came out that book Daenerys was a schizo with visions and that D&D minimized all her questionable behavior I expected nothing less than this kind of asspull.
Though doing it 3 episodes before finishing was incredible.
This should teach you a lesson to not put any trust in a tv adaptation and that if you get into a show or movie series that's adapted you better read the source material beforehand because it's 9 out of 10 times better, this counts double for anything produced since 2014.

It's really difficult to portray Dany's madness in TV format. There are people using artifacts (glass candles) and astral projection to send her dreams and visions to make her crazy. For example, she has a dream involving menstrual blood & dragons, and afterwards she starts to believe that she's the LITERAL mother of dragons.
