The only part I disliked about the human stuff was how the mother had all of her colleagues mercilessly executed in mass shootings at the beginning. I felt it was needlessly morbid, and I spent the rest of the film halfway scared that a mass shooting was going to happen in the theater.

Wish it was better. It is not impossible for a kaiju movie to also have a compelling story, it's happened before. This shouldn't be some lofty unattainable bar, having a good story isn't some fucking above average milestone, it's just a core part of being a fucking movie.
Monster action wasn't even that good. Not framed or paced well, the effects looked downright terrible by the end of the big climactic fight, and I never felt like the monsters held any weight or impact in their movements. Ghidorah drops big G from the fucking stratosphere and you're telling me all it does is make a little poof on the ground? Shit felt unsatisfying as fuck.
At least when Pacific Rim did that shit they had the excuse of the jaeger stalling its fall.

The dysfunctional family melodrama is garbage. Emma's actions and motivations make no sense and, for how smart her daughter is shown to be, I don't buy for a second she didn't think people were going to die. You don't spend enough time with Emma to make her redemption "arc" work and the family stuff just ends.

A big problem with the family drama in KotM is we don't see the point where said family was driven apart. We're shown the initial thing that causes it for like 5 seconds at the beginning? Then it cuts immediately to 5 years later, and we're just supposed to take it at face value when the characters exposit what happened between them to us.
Not to mention we don't see how Emma brought Maddie over to her side, that whole plotline felt very muddled overall.

Having better world buildingGigan spinoff when doesn't excuse the bland execution of the trilogy's actual plotline. I never cared about Haruo's plight at any point in any of the 3 films, as a matter of fact I never felt invested in any of the characters. The pacing is dreadfully slow even for a non kaiju story, and when combined with the sparse and average action, it makes for a less than enjoyable viewing experience.

The movie is depressingly dark both in themes and aesthetic so it's understandable. It's something that you can rewatch every 5 years at best.

I'd honestly rather have a bland main character who is put in harrowing situations over a near entire cast of obnoxious quipsters who almost never shut up.
This isn't even mentioning how g14 is much better directed and paced, and how its (brief) action is actually framed in ways to feel gratifying and memorable. 10 straight minutes of juiced up Godzilla weightlessly smacking around ghidorah in shaky cam rain is essentially nothing compared to something as simple as Goji slamming the fuck out of the Male muto into a building with his tail, crushing his torso and causing limbs to fall off.
An hour of shit kaiju battles does not compare to one minute of well done kaiju battle.

It was an extremely important film, and aside from its themes it broke new ground in a lot of different areas and created an entire film genre almost by itself. That's why it's always ranked at a different level than all the others. Shin Godzilla, for example, might have had similar themes as the first one, but it didn't revolutionize certain aspects of film like 1954 Godzilla did.

Every scene with Mothra stirred my heart emotions. She gave me hope when there was none. Best character in the movie. Godzilla did her proud.

G54 also doesn't have a bumfuck retarded finale setpiece like Shin does, so there's that too

The overall transfer of this 2014 movie got buttfucked on DVD release. I can't make out much in the shitty lighting. I don't remember it being so dark in theaters. I hope this movie gets a re-release in a trilogy set or something.

Every piece of Mothra art based on this design has been the best thing to come out of King of the Monsters 2019 for me. Stunning.

Albeit limited, her role in the movie was satisfying to me. Mothra and Godzilla depended on each other. I was thrilled to see them as allies 'til the end.

a couple minutes of gold at the very end of a two hour movie means most of the movie sucks ass, KOTM keeps your attention the whole time and the main character actually has a motivation to care about what's happening and be around like cranston in the first one except he doesn't die 15 minutes in and the movie also actually focuses on fucking godzilla, with ghidorah being the constant nigger instead of a cloverfield ripoff fused with night rider

So KotM then? I never once got invested in any of the characters, not their dumb family drama, not the mom's dumb plan to save the world by destroying it only "oopsies turns out we woke up an alien instead lol". I did not care about the whole alpha Titan concept, it felt very trite and almost embarassing in how cool and epic the movie was trying to make it feel.

G14 is absolutely better paced, its paced like an actual movie. The only time where it really REALLY falters is by shoddily writing out the dad character, and this is something everyone agrees on.

I just watched it and what the fuck are the (((critics))) talking about, there was far too little monster fights. Too much fucking family drama nobody cares about, Millie panting (arguably hot) and too little military crazy weapons being dismantled or rendered uneffective. BUT still it was hella enjoyable, far more than first, or most capeshit. Some of the shots were also absolute KINO, especially those in the air with Rodan, ghidorah and Mothra

Things we knew had to happen:

>Mothra an heroes herself to save the day
>Ghidora finds a way to come back
>Godzilla gets fucked by another US super weapon and we prove to be the greatest monsters yet again

I was just happy to see her chalk up an actual victory for once.

The human element was just fine in Kong. People acted and talked like you'd expect. It was fine. However in Godzilla it's so distracting to watch. Nobody talks like that, it's jarring. The monster fights are fine but that cannot be at the expenses of everything else. Yeah, Nobody goes to Kaiju movies for the people, but surely you can't completely ignore them. Just have someone who is really good at writing for people and fix the script in that way and you'd be fine.

Funnily enough, this is exactly what they did for the last American movie...that is, the first half hour of it. Frank Darabont was brought in to make some changes to the first act or so of G14, namely the parts involving Bryan Cranston's character, and it's believed he's the reason why the character became so compelling.

Why they didn't just bring back Darabont or some other noteworthy writer to punch up the dialogue in KotM is beyond me, it should not be this difficult to write a decent story people!

Absolutely right. Far too many fans are far too accepting of this movie. The characters were crap, the direction was crap, and there were maybe 3 sequences where the monsters' screentime wasn't constantly interrupted by cuts to the humans. This is still the best US Godzilla movie ever made, but as the series goes it's a 2.5 out of 5. We can't just accept this and blind ourselves to the flaws, we need to demand better.

The anime movies are fine for what they are. They'll always get hate for not being a monster romp, but opinions will only get kinder to them over time, much like was the case for GMK.

I could forgive the paper thin characters if the story were interesting. But "radiation" restores nature", the mom's plan was stupid, jokes were lame, everything was tell instead of show, and Monarch sucks at its job. Name one good human moment or line that isn't Serizawa's death. Exactly. There are none.

It looks awful. Also, whats with the fucking size changes? Sometimes ghidorrahs head is the size of a car and sometimes its the size of a city block. They really fucked this movie up. The human story was efficient at giving you exposition while mostly staying out of the way for the big spectacle scenes. Which is the opposite of what happened in 2014 where the storyline was just as shit.
I enjoyed it, because as much as I like kaiju suits it was refreshing to see a big budget, CGI monster brawl.
Most kaiju fans seem to have unironic autism, as their critiques of the movies usually boil down to "my fav monster wasn't in it" "it wasn't exactly the same as past movies" or "it wasn't well written enough"
One of my favourite godzilla movies has aliens travel through time to replace infant godzilla with three baby dragons so that king gidorah is created by the nuke instead. Stupid plots are nothing new. Since an organization that studies kaiju is established in this series, KotM's macguffin isn't even that unreasonable.
The other things, I don't even understand. It's a 40 movie franchise and yet people want it to be the same exact thing forever. I even liked the more experimental anime movies that came out recently, but apparently that makes me "not a true godzilla fan" because I'm not a complete autist who is comforted by repeating patterns.

Of course there are some standout movies here and there that actually utilize godzilla as a deeper metaphor but don't lie to yourself and think they are the norm. Compared to most of the franchise, KotM's plot is completely serviceable and it serves the purpose of having Godzilla duke it out with other monsters.
Ironically, the animated movies tried to use godzilla as the backdrop in order to have a story about different ideologies clashing in a post-societal world each rapresented by one of the alien species but it was rejected en-masse by the fanbase for daring to have different designs for the monsters

I never said they were the norm, just that they are possible. I'm never going to prescribe to this notion that any movies in any series shouldn't try to be more than what they are, and the thing is Godzilla started out being objectively more than what its status quo ended up being. And given that this is a high production Hollywood movie they were working on for near 5 years, yeah I did expect something better than milquetoast Heisei tier, instead of the thing Legendary&co ended up shitting out.

I saw it too. I never care about the human aspect. I expect it to be bad. Who cares? I just want the fighting to be good. Only the Rodan intro was good. The G vs G stuff looked like it was probably good but they only gave us scattered short clips of it. They really fucked up what is supposed to be the best thing.

I loved Gozilla biting off a head. I loved Rodan emerging and his fight vs army. I loved the posing shots. I loved that G eats Zero.

I hated the truncated fight scenes. I hated they gave Godzilla game-win AoE. I hate the way Rodan got all twitchy and fast like a sock puppet. I hated how Rodan's off-switch is hit when Mothra stabs him. I hated the inconsistencies of the physics (the small touches of effort at physics consistency were always a hallmark of good Zilla films)

Easily five or six worse G films out there but this was bad. Last G movie and Kong were far far better. As has been said, this movie failed to learn anything from Pacific Rim.

It's a very iconic and emotional movie from the Japanese perspective, but I agree that it's not fun to watch because of how dark and depressing it is. It's still one of my favorite movies of all time.
I question the judgment of anyone who seriously liked 2014 more than KOTM. I can accept if Godzilla or giant monster movies aren't your cup of tea, but 2014 was just terrible.
