Some are mentioning it in the same breath as 2001 and Solaris while others are less impressed. What about you, user? Did you love it or hate it?
Also, it's really nice seeing Pattinson blossom into such a terrific actor. Taking that Twilight money so he could focus on passion projects without financial constraints was a great career move in hindsight.
This movie was a literal wankfest that would rather focus on how much semen it could fling everywhere instead of fleshing out any mind bending space concepts. I get it’s low budget and arty but damn

The production design was laughably bad. But I like Pattinson.
Daniel Perez
I thought it was good. Not great. The scenes with the baby were fantastic after that it went a bit downhill. The exposition scene on the train was completely useless with terrible acting. The adult daughter was also quite bad. As far as acting goes Pattinson was the standout, others were passable. Some of the dialogue was clunky, you could see that Denis doesn't have perfect english. The thematic core of the film seemed to be quite confused. It was like Denis tried to explore so many themes so the film ends up being pulled into several different directions but never coming coherently and completely together. Still it was good, the dog ship scene was great. The theme of isolation and going mad because of the confined space and frustration was nice.
Jack Long
I wouldn't really say that. I think it explored a lot of themes, most of them cynical. Even the depraved sexuality served a purpose in conveying the base nature of humanity when society doesn't hold one in check. Outside of that, I thought themes of existential dread, a humane approach, social manipulation, dehumanization, trauma, and several others were explored sufficiently.
Jose Long
Couldn't bother continue watching it, it was when patcat started to curse or some shit.. pretentious crap
Hunter Sanchez
What didn't you like about the production design? I don't think Denis was going for a singular overarching theme. I believe she stated in an interview she wanted it to be a bit of a mess.
I agree that at times the exposition was weak and the dialogue was lacking. However, in other moments it was quite brilliant (the hair rituals, the shovel, the imbibed water, etc.). She shouldn't have dumbed it down.
Hudson Cook
>I don't think Denis was going for a singular overarching theme. I know, that's what i'm saying she tried to explore lot of themes and it felt like the film was being pulled into different directions. >I believe she stated in an interview she wanted it to be a bit of a mess. Yes that's what i was thinking, it's definitely not a tight film. It feels like a mess. I don't think it's positive in this case. >I agree that at times the exposition was weak and the dialogue was lacking. However, in other moments it was quite brilliant (the hair rituals, the shovel, the imbibed water, etc.). She shouldn't have dumbed it down. Yes i agree, some dialogue was good and some of it was clumsy. I really disliked the train scene, that should have been cut. It was really pointless.
Tyler Miller
When it comes to themes it was clear that the director didn’t want to put all of their eggs into one basket. They decided better to put each egg into individual baskets, but unfortunately the eggs were crushed under the sheer weight of their pretentiousness anyway
Costumes, sets, props; you name it. All looked extremely amateurish.
Lucas Watson
I see where you're coming from. Personally, I enjoyed the clash of themes and think the film ending on a humane note tied it together nicely enough.
The train scene was okay but it probably wasn't necessary given the characters are required to log daily reports to sustain life in the ship and since the daughter broached the subject of everyone on board being lowlife. Either of these scenarios could've been used to expound on the purpose of the mission more organically IMO. Hmm, I see. It didn't stick out like a sore thumb to me. A Denis film will always inevitably be called pretentious by some of the crowd. I'm sure there are people out there who'd attribute the same to your favorite movies.
Tyler Gomez
>Watched it the other night >Thought it was mediocre and overrated >Some of the dialogue and characters are so bizarre its like they were written by an algorithm >Later found out it was directed by a woman
Did i fuck up by starting Denis with Trouble every day? Now i've seen Bastards and High life and both seemed really stale after Trouble every day.
Carter Lee
>I see where you're coming from. Personally, I enjoyed the clash of themes and think the film ending on a humane note tied it together nicely enough. I still liked the film, it wasn't bad or anything. I liked the other Denis film i saw more. Beau Travail also felt thematically confused but it seemed like she pulled it together beautifully which was very interesting.
Cinematography and Pattinson were good even if you didn't like the film.
Easton Hill
>Some are mentioning it in the same breath as 2001 and Solaris while others are less impressed Weren't Annihilation and Arrival also mentioned in the same breath as 2001 and Solaris? There are always easily impressable retards who do that.
In fact, whenever you hear about a "polarizing" movie from the past 30 years that's described as "you either love it or hate", it most likely means overblown praise from tastelets eager to discover a new classic on one side, and everybody else saying it's just an alright/bad movie on the other.
Aaron Bennett
my honesty deserves to be praised in comparison to all the snobs who give this garbage positive reviews
Jeremiah Martin
It's Denis's first English-language film and her screenwriting partner left due to creative differences so it's understandable in context.
She's not just any woman, though; she's considered one of the best arthouse directors ever.
Nope, most believe Beau Travail to be her best feature.
I get that. Side note, are you excited for James Gray's Ad Astra?
I don't think that's quite on the head. Denis is a celebrated filmmaker and High Life is much more thematically similar to those two than the two you mentioned. It's due to more than all 5 falling in the broad sci-fi spectrum.
They're not snobs just because they like something you don't. People have different tastes. It's fine to have differences in opinion without attacking the Other. :)
Thomas Bailey
>I get that. Side note, are you excited for James Gray's Ad Astra? Yes, the trailer seems very basic but based on script descriptions the trailer really misrepresents the film. It seems like the studio doesn't know how to market Gray's film so they just cut the action sequences and put them in the trailer. The plot seems a bit dumb but the script descriptions got me excited so i hope it will be full blown Gray sci-fi and that it wasn't fucked up by the studio. Visuals look great too so even if it will be disappointment, it will be nice to look at.
Yeah, the trailer really was rubbish. The "substance that can destroy our galaxy" line was Uwe Boll-tier.
Gray said it's his cross between Apocalypse Now and 2001, which sounds great, but I've also heard the studio has delayed the release significantly to dumb it down and recut it. I really hope that's not the case. I like Gray a lot and would love to see his unadulterated vision. I loved The Lost City of Z.
Kayden Price
>They're not snobs just because they like something you don't. Why would they be? they're snobs because they're claire denis fans, and all clarie denis fans are snobs >People have different tastes. last refuge of a simpleton pleb >It's fine to have differences in opinion without attacking the Other. :) you haven't earned this level of condescension and you never will
Cooper Gomez
If you say so, user. I hope there are releases this year that are more to your liking.
Brody Jenkins
There are several versions why it was delayed. Gray claims it was VFX. Last year there were test screenings, with unfinished CGI. The reactions were mostly positive, it is not for basics so it seems like Gray's film. Pitt allegedly gives his best performance and the film is thematically similar to First Man. What's worrisome is that this march test screening was cancelled and there were short reshoots afterwards. Also the wife character is not in the 2016 draft of the script. This may signalize that Gray put her in the script later or that studio forced him to put her there in order to make the main slightly autistic character more relatable. So who knows. I hope the film wasn't meddled with and if it was i hope Gray will say that it was.
why does all modern french art film devolve into sex and being mad is that the most primal form of french expression?
Lincoln Adams
Yes, I've heard about the delays due to Gray wanting VFX up to his standard, which is fine. The other rumors are what worry me. Liv Tyler seemed so shoehorned in the trailer. I can't help but feel that there was studio interference, but I'd love to be wrong. Now that you've mentioned it, I'm tempted to read the original script, though I know I'd regret doing so if the film turns out to be as wonderful as we hope.
Cooper Carter
I would probably read the original script but i haven't found it anywhere online, people who have it didn't want to share it. I don't really mind being spoiled, i read Midsommar script and don't regret doing it. I really hope Ad Astra will deliver, hopefully it will premiere at Venice so there will be some reactions soon.
Sebastian Lewis
I'm incredibly excited for Midsommar! Without mentioning spoilers, based on the script, do you think Aster's sophomore effort will match or exceed Hereditary? I've heard it's totally nuts and much more manic. It's a not-so-subtle homage to The Wicker Man, right?
I'll look around and see if I can find the script for Ad Astra before this thread expires.
Owen Perry
This is "good times" all over again. Shock value, edgy dialogue, edgy characters, no real depth to anything happening and no tensions since you dont give a shit about what happens to the characters.
Dont get me wrong. I thought that some things were incredibly well done, but it just falls flat in many ways.
The real overlooked Sci-fi flick was Prospector.
Gabriel Roberts
>it is not for basics so it seems like Gray's film When and what did Gray do to be considered not for basics?
Jaxson Nelson
I was disappointed in the script tbqh. It was very much like The Wicker Man. It's more violent and more of a traditional horror than Hereditary. It also deals with tragedy but i don't think it does a good job in a way that Hereditary did. Also the running time for it is 140 minutes which id worrisome considering the script is like 118 pages, the script itself was a slog and not that interesting overall. There were some neat details and good scenes but as a whole it didn't work. I hope the film will be better, it's only the script after all and it may translate very well on the screen. I just didn't find anything that interesting to give a shit about, the characters were not interesting and the plot is quite predictable and derivative in my opinion.
Evan Taylor
The dehumanization and emotional distancing of the characters is certainly intentional. They're portrayed as the dregs of society. I think it's a technique borrowed from 2001, in which HAL is more sympathetic than any of the space crew.
I disagree about a lack of depth and tension, though. What in particular did you feel was superficial? As far as tension goes, I don't think the narrative relied on a sympathetic ethos. It's supposed to be like watching a car wreck IMO.
I've heard good things about Prospect. I'll have to check it out!
Not that user, but I wouldn't consider The Lost City of Z a casual-friendly movie.
That's about what I figured. Hopefully it packs much more of a visceral punch on screen.
Julian Lopez
More classical films and he is able to hold shot for more than 3 seconds, he also doesn't have that much action in his films and is more focused on characters. His films are deliberately paced. Look at Lost City of Z. It's no Indiana Jones. Those films are rare nowadays. >This is "good times" all over again. Shock value, edgy dialogue, edgy characters, no real depth to anything happening and no tensions since you dont give a shit about what happens to the characters. Good Time was tense as fuck and it had characters, not likable characters but the characters were there. Also it was not edgy, i don't really get the comparison between High Life and Good Time.
Got you on Lost City of Z, I've only seen Little Odessa and it was terribly cheesy in my opinion despite the great potential of the subject matter. Will slowly crawl up his filmography until September.
Colton Carter
The script was in comments. Fantastic, i hope that it's good. Check out The Immigrant and Two Lovers they are both very good.
William Taylor
Great hair kino from the asian chick and la binoche, other than that it bit off more than it can chew when it comes to the isolation aspect of the plot and the mother of pattinson's child can't act brings down the whole movie
Cameron Bailey
He's worked with Joaquin Phoenix a bunch so his films should be watchable just for that. I believe The Immigrant and Lost City are considered his best two. Enjoy the watch!
Are we sure that's the real script? I'll avoid reading it for now but it'd be nice to have. I just hope it's not a virus lol
Nicholas Perry
I agree, the movie probably needed to be longer to nail the pressure-cooker pacing of mental deterioration due to isolation. That said, I think the film works as is because these weren't stable individuals to begin with and the time skips and non-chronological editing made the depravity believable. But I agree that it could've been done better. More time spent developing "alone in space" can't be a bad thing, though it would mean completely scrapping the way it was cut IMO.
I thought Mia Goth was believably grimy and unlikable. Outside of Binoche, though, none of the secondary actors really got a chance to shine.
Brandon Taylor
Yes, that page is pretty reliable. I have downloaded the David Lowery script for his new film Green Knight from there. It seems like this is the only draft available, other people also claimed that they read 2016 draft so this must be it. From what i have read, based on the trailer and script, some things were changed so i bet this draft won't be the final film.
Josiah Martin
Nice, enjoy the read, mate. I'm very excited for Green Knight as well.
Great talking to you, user. It's rare to chat in quality threads on Yea Forums nowadays. It's mostly capeshit and other LCD stuff. This is a nice reminder of what Yea Forums used to be like.
Jaxon Johnson
Thanks, mate.
It was nice talking to you too. I agree, the state of Yea Forums is pretty terrible but sometimes there is some nice discussion which is always great.
Eli Carter
I do agree the movie works but if you view it in a minimalistic approach to the whole space isolation. This is their 25 to life/death sentence after all and it bummed me a bit that only andre 3000, la binoche and rob came to terms with it. The others were just "there" to further rob and la binoche's developmenr. Also it would have benefited a bit if they had adverse effects from spending so much time in deep space like in Pandorum. Again kind of a minimalistic approach to it, it just dealt with their feelings, tendencies and human nature as criminals in space
Jeremiah Cruz
Yeah, they started dropping like flies in the second half. I think even Andre deserved more development. He just went to sleep and drifted off after about a grand total of 2 minutes of dialogue. Like you said, it works as a minimalist approach, but isolation and madness is best depicted in a much longer, linear narrative.
