reminder that Lean was an editor before a director and the key to being a great director is understanding how to edit
I've still yet to see any of these, because I hold them in very high regard and am scared I'll be disappointed
if that makes sense
How could you hold a movie in high regard if you've never seen it? Doesn't make much sense at all you fool.
They are held in high regard because they are masterpieces. You do yourself a disservice not watching them.
It makes complete sense. I was the same way for well over a decade. A few months ago I gave in and finally watched a bridge on the river kwai. It surpassed my expectations in almost every way. Still haven't worked up the courage to see the other two yet but I'm making progress.
That's a weird way to say "they're too long"
I didnt know this but now that I do I agree 100%
The edits in LoA were so shockingly good I had a double take at a few points. Fucking 15 minutes in when he blows out the match has to be one of the greatest scene transitions in history
Zhivago>Lawrence>stupid bridge movie
Bridge on the river Kwai was alright, and the only one of these 3 i've seen.
Bunch of american and brit troops get captured by the japanese, and forced to build a bridge within a month or two.. or something like that.
One of the brit officers keeps whining and bitching about how he doesn't have to work at the camp because he's an officer, so they keep stuffing his prissy ass into a tiny unventilated metal box, and just let him cook for a while.
Nothing particularly exciting happens, but I like the interactions between the other characters.
lmao, fags
>I hold them in very high regard
>never seen them
It sounds like you hold other people's ideas about the films in high regard.
>Haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia
Get out
Get dat bull of the tv RIGHT NOW
I'd say Lawrence of Arabia is 1, but the other two are also good, but Dr Zhivago is more of an epic movie, so that's #2
Bros...
Tarantino movies went to shit specifically when his editor died.
By the pic
3 1 2
I like Dr Z more than most
Lawrence>>>>Zhivago>>>>>>>>>River Kwai
OP trying to have a Lean night.
Editors make or break a picture. Also, actors pissing off an editor could mean losing screen time. Not a coincidence that James Cameron insisted on participating in the editing process for all of his movies.
he didnt edit loa, tho. especially the iconic one with the match and the sun. read that bit, i promise its worth it
I'm amazed all directors don't have a big hand in editing their movies
Watching her iron those sheets was very erotic for some reason
Kwai > Lawrence
Haven't seen Zhivago.
>We. Want. Two. Large. Glasses. Of. Lemonade.
Ohhh mama
Is Lawrence a gay icon? He's so fuckin fruity
Is Lawrence a gay icon? He's so fuckin fruity
It really helps but being an editor won't necessary help being a boss of thousands of people all looking to you for all the answers and dealing with personalities like actors and producers.
Is Lawrence a gay icon? He's so fuckin fruity
Personally, for me it's Zhivago > Lawrence > Kwai
Lawrence > Kwai > Zhivago, it really hurts me to do that to Zhivago though. I think Lawrence is a pretty clear #1. Brief Encounter is also excellent, but completely different from these three epics
If nothing else this thread reminded me that I really need to see Dr. Zhivago. Seriously, Lawrence is one of my favourite movies and I adored River Kwai so I don't know why the fuck I haven't watched it yet.
Yep. The whole point was that he was gay, it was just that it was the early 60s so you couldn't really tell or even show the audience that in a big budget movie. They had to imply it but I think the way they did it works way better.
thought it wass funny that the documentary on him claimed he made up the bit about a turk official raping him, fuckers know nothing about the middle east. There's literally thousands of boy slaves shipped into saudi for sheiks to diddle.
Wait till winter
This one. Lawrence was the perfect balance of story, visuals, pacing, and aesthetic. Zhivago matches up to Lawrence but some of the pacing and story is a bit poor in the first half. Kwai has some of the best acting, pacing, and visuals but the story itself isn't as interesting as the other two.
It is winter where I'm at. Plus it's a really dry period for work so I don't have any jobs until next week. Might be the perfect time.
I don't know if it's because the pacing in Lawrence is actually good, it does dart around a bit with some slower parts, and the 'anticlimax' of the government devolving into chaos and wider politics ending with lawrence going home happens to fit what otherwise wouldn't be a particular good ending.
oh hell yeah, go for it
Get ready for cold kino then user
>ah, then it is a gift
Ok. I'm sold. I'll watch it tomorrow.
This, seriously, the FUCK?? Its just a fucking movie god fucking damnit, and theyre GOOD, JUST WATCH THEM AND STOP BEING FAGS
In fairness I had the same reaction to Fitzcarraldo. Finding out how that movie was made made me blown away without even seeing it. The only reason why I didn't watch it for a little while after was because it was weirdly hard to pirate an HD version and all the versions floating around online are either in German or potato quality. Wasn't disappointed though. Aguirre was better though.
Yes.
