I know we are supposed to think of government as being a giant failure, but, they did seem to act pretty fast at cleaning it up.
she's not wrong, the writers don't give credit to the locals who must have been freaking out bad, they wouldn't just stand around watching it like they had no idea whats going on
the article was hysterical. She couldn't cope with the science at all and therefore it was a bad show. Typical brainlet pseudo liberal bong.

Post scenes women will never understand.
I really think they should have shown the water just slowly gurgling out of the torn pipes after hours of turning the valves like the script said, just to hammer home how futile it was and they basically died for nothing.
can /pol/ please go back to its containment board?
Evolution is a statistics game. Beings with more ability to survive in an environment would breed more, causing an exponential effect. In a radiated environment, there is one concern: radiation poisoning. In radiation poisoning, there are two factors to consider in survivability: passive and active. The passive factor is how well you can prevent or mitigate the poisoning, meaning how little radiation you actually absorb, which is why iodine pills are handed out. Beings who absorb less radiation would survive more, and thus would be more prominent, in other words, evolve to adapt to their environment. The active factor, or what actions the body takes once radiation is absorbed in order to mitigate the structural damage. As an example, in computer networking a damaged packet of data can be detected by a checksum mechanism. Beings with a similar mechanism would survive longer, leading to more offspring, etc.
I was talking about radioactive materials, not radiation itself. Otherwise there wouldn't be a reason to take iodine pills, which prevent the body from absorbing radioactive iodine.

Speaking of roasties...
>"Photographs of various scientists who participated in the battle to clean up Chernobyl...
>"Legasov was aided by dozens of scientists who worked tirelessly alongside him at Chernobyl.
>Some spoke out against the official account of events and were subject to denunciation, arrest and imprisonment.
>The character of Ulana Khomyuk was created to represent them all and to honor their dedication and service to truth and humanity."
>photographs of the scientists are shown
>they are all men
>No realism
>Why people no run, we would run
Because they didn't have the precedent of how dangerous nuclear power plant yeeting it's reactor out was. And this zoomer cunt has it BECAUSE they are the precedent.

Take a trip to /pol/
Kinda checks out though. There are a lot of scenes when characters say and do things that would make them appeal heroic to the audience when in reality they were simply following orders because they grew up that way. The divers' scene would be a great example. Tose three men volunteer in the series whilst in reality it was just their shift so they simply did what they had to do and didn't really put much effort into pulling it off. So even though emptying the tanks truly was a task of great importance, the actual human actions and behaviour behind this event and some following wasn't nearly as dramatic. The series is full of these moments but it doesn't mean bad writing. It means that writers have tryied to adapt soviet automatons to fit somewhat heroic and loveable characters
Is this a troll? Why wouldn't she just look up her questions?
We need a Disney version of Chernobyl where Akimov, Toptunov, Sitnikov and Vasily survive
>>le russians are incompetent show
I disagree. Schrebina is competence incarnated.
There was like one and a half women.
It's a waste of time, don't watch it. HBO shills this hard because GOT failed so hard and they're doing a damage control shilling. Of course, useful idiots are shilling it for them now.
>take me over the reactor core!
Then your argument isn't that evolution would provide organic beings with a learned physical ability to actively resist or prevent damage due to radiation but would favour those whose bodies most efficiently dealt with its effects ie greater healing ability throughout the body's tissues and perhaps a decreased susceptibility to cancers than the average population due to an overall healthier and more efficient cell cycle?
Comrades! we got one!
Because USSR officials really feared being shamed and blamed forever for fucking something up big. That's why USSR (and Russia now as well) did whatever they could to make things look like nothing serious happened every time something serious happened.
For example, this shit happened deep inside USSR territory and the happening was denied by officials for 22 years:

You're not going to.
But they had no idea of what's going on. And it's not even because of Soviet Union, you would'nt have any idea either. They don't have the Chernobyl experience as a reference as of yet to react in the same way that we would. It's easy to say that after Chernobyl, but how do you expect them to be informed, not only of how serious the accident was, but the effets of radiation and so on. To them, what happened was a big explosion and "I'm sure they are working to fix it"
Hell, remember that some people insisted in continue working in the second tower of the WTC in 2001 even after the first one was hit.
Part of why radiation is so dangerous is that it is so silent. The direct encounters were brutal, but the people at the town had no apparent sign that they should leave before it they called them to leave.

Before the accident there were huge cranes around the reactor. After the explosion, some of these were literally hanging in the void without support” recalled Colonel Oleg Chichcov years after the disaster. Chichcov was at the time of the explosion at Chernobyl a Mi-26 helicopter instructor that was dispatched as part of the response effort. “I had been assigned to a mission area, but I refused until the cranes had been made safe.” After Chichcov’s refusal, one of the Mi-8 crews on scene was asked to complete the mission, accepting it and ultimately, never returning.
some people are just assholes, you've never had an asshole boss? that and he had another accident with radiation earlier in his life and it killed his kid
>au fait

He was supposed to get a promotion, but because of a bunch of incompetent halfwits he got ten-years hard labor and cancer instead.
he led a naval nuclear project before he came to chernobyl. it was a secretive military project so he was used to giving out orders without being questioned.
>muh GOAT tier
Have some standards. LOST is GOAT tier. Chernobyl is a solid 7.5/10 show. It has a good first and last episode with other interesting scenes throughout, but ultimately it has to rely on the allure of the historical event itself to carry its own hype. It would’ve been good if the show tried to take risks by making it much more authentic by having it spoken in Ukrainian and making it much spookier and more atmospheric. Otherwise it’s an ok show, don’t be so upset someone says something other than “omg best show ever” like the rest of the shills.

Real one was probably not as much of an asshole as series version of him.
Sure man was arrogant as fuck, but his arguments in defence of himself and station personnel during trial were sound enough and he spoke the truth about not breaking any instructions and rules in the situation that led to explosion because there were no such written rules and manuals for this exact situation at the time.

must be pretty comfy moving around decent-tier productions having varying degrees of supporting roles.
I had no problem with Juliet in LOST. She was well written. And so was every other female character. Ulana, however is not. And she’s there simply to be an eye rolling morally righteous sociopolitical message to the viewer because the amateur director and producers couldn’t help diluting the story of Chernobyl with petty politics.
>Sarcofags
It's the infirmary for you, comrade!
>they wouldn't just stand around watching it like they had no idea whats going on
people literally sat and watched it not knowing they were literally giving themselves death. they were russians and communists who's biggest tools were lying and ignorance. The (((critic))) is flat out stupid for not considering this.
Just accept the truth. This...is how an RBMK thread explodes.
If any of you want a less dramatized and more realistic view of what happened in the control room, watch Zero Hour Chernobyl youtu.be
They also made the infamous Zero Hour Columbine Shooting documentation, both worth the watch. After you watched it Episode 5 is a joke compared to the documentation.
But I am not lying, бpaтишкa.
Initially you only get some really bad sunburn, it takes a few days for your body to realise how fucked it is
He should've been cast as Leo Atreides
My thinking is that the soviet nuclear plant system was run in kind of a paramilitary fashion and Dyatlov's harshness was just standard hazing meant to whip the younger employees into shape. I was in the Navy and his attitude seemed about on par with what one could expect from a tough instructor in boot camp or or A school (for example, nuclear power school.) It really was his recklessness that was the problem. Had he postponed the test until he could run it properly with his day shift men and no xenon buildup he would have been fine.
Was that really the whole point of showing multiple cigarettes being put out every episode from first to last? Just felt odd every time
For such exposure it would take hours to get into "walking dead" state and about 1-2 days to die.
...
>a little know-how
She litteraly know everything before everyone else 5 minutes into her first appearance into the show
Fast forward 10minutes and she somehow go through a soviet blockade, immediately get in touch with the local authority without going through chain of command and end up explaining to Gorbatchev what will happen in Chernobyl despite never setting foot in the plant
It's a terrible character hamfisted in a kino show for obvious ideological reason
random pictures of russian towns arent proof
why did chernobyl become a disaster while three mile island (an arguably worse reactor) was fine?
WOT?
For time. There were a lot of smaller things cut, and some big things too like the may day parade just so they could have time to fit other more important things. If they had one or 2 more episodes, or each episode was 30 minutes longer, they could have had more kino
because the control rods weren't graphite tipped and primed to blow the fuck up, it was a simple valve failure
It's also a way to visually indicate that characters are under stress. Pay close attention to the when they cut to a cigarette shot.
was any of it filmed before it was cut?
>multiple cigarettes being put out every episode from first to last?
Cigarettes being put out represent lost lives
Christ what a brainlet. There had literally never been a single nuclear plant incident where a civilian was killed in history up until that point. Why would anyone run?

Good thing RMBK reactors dont explode then
Believe it or not, I was born in 1992 in the district where that monument is located.
Just finished the last episode. Pretty kino show. HBO did good. Little too much anti Russian stuff and probably doesn't help the cause of clean energy but hey it's still kino.
but half the coolant was released, that should have caused a meltdown, right?
it sure looked like it exploded
are you stupid? explain to me how an RBMK reactor explodes.
You're delusional, take this man to the infirmary

in what fucking way? all of the events actually happened.
and why was that? shouldnt the TMI reactor explode too?
IRL he had a ton of experience was probably assburg and still acted like he was in the navy. From reading about him and reading his translated writings, he struck me as the guy to genuinely think he was always right and have things done exactly his way. He (unfortunately) wasn't the hilarious meme machine he's portrayed as.

There's a reason they call it historical drama, yes.
>arguably worse reactor
Actually RBMK is less safe and controllable than PWR (Russian equivalent of VVER).
RBMK:
1. Easy to build & maintain, can be easily scaled by increasing it's size - this was it's main selling point for USSR growing power demand.
2. Does not need to shutdown to load it with fuel or replace any rod
3. Much cheaper but as it turned out also less safe containment, when shit went boom it spewed radioactive junk all over the Europe
4. Has some reactivity issues with positive feedback. Can loop itself into uncontrollable reaction speeding (because of that issue this very thread exists). 30k MW in a flash!
PWR:
1. Can't be scaled well (containment has to be a solid one piece tank with just some ins and outs that can withstand a lot of pressure), pain in the ass to maintain
2. Requires full shutdown to load it with fresh fuel or pull out defective rod
3. Containment is a fucking cunt to build, but it is robust as fuck, didn't even melt and kept all the shit except some that was flushed out with coolant inside.
4. Had no controlability quirks, TMI staff just fucked up hard with main water pumps while auxillary pumps were cut off the system for maintanance.
Absolute fucking brainlet
I am Russian.
>It's the same government, tovarisch.
Never denied it, I just like differentiating shit.
I just don't see why they covered the RBMK issue up, or why the KGB guy was unwilling to retrofit them. They could have done it secretly. Couldn't they see that the ramifications outweighed any benefit of covering things up?

Proper containment
should straight up be called "the rape show"
If they turned the pumps back on instead of pressing AZ-5 could they have prevented a meltdown or was shit fucked no matter what
The best part of this show is schizophrenic Soviet officials denying the reactor exploded because it's ideologically inconsistent with Communism for anything bad to happen.
Does this look like this face of a man who did something wrong?
Probably, yeah. It's debatable whether the rods were already so hot they would flash vaporize the water.
No such thing, you're delusional

>tfw you will never build a comfy atomograd
but why though?
I just recently left a job with a boss who was former military. He was a two faced, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde piece of shit. He knew he was supposed to behave one way in the business world, but couldn't help behaving the other way whenever he was stressed the slightest bit. And you could tell he didn't genuinely desire to behave normally, that was the fake persona. He wanted to be Dyatlov all day long.
I resigned when I realized it was only a matter of time before I put him through a wall and ended up in jail with a dead career for doing so.
I honestly don't understand the military. Is this kind of "leadership" and behavior actually beneficial? How in the hell can it help in a higher stress situation when it completely demoralizes subordinates in a normal situation? I guess I get boot camp, trying to get weaker guys to drop out. But is life in the military really like that?
RIP those lads they paid the iron price
Even with full meltdown, TMI wouldn't be as bad as Chernobyl because it had a containment building, whereas Chernobyl or any of the RBMK reactors didn't. If Chernobyl had a containment building, atmospheric release of radioactive particles would be much much lower. The containment building would be badly damaged since it was a pretty big shockwave, but it would still contain the direct radiation outward and spread of irradiated dust and other materials. Graphite for example would (still) not be found on the roof and around the plant.

>one of the prominent memes since the beginning
>"stahp with teh forced meme guyz!"
>why they covered the RBMK issue up
>or why the KGB guy was unwilling to retrofit them
Because it fucks up the HOLY PLAN.
Not meeting the demand for electricity because of unexpected country-wide reactor shutdowns was unacceptable.
It would mean whoever was responsible (Ministry of Medium Machine Building, IIRC, was responsible for building the reactor) fucked up and there would have been a lot of internal strife between ministries and inside them over it. Governmental figures sure don't like losing their positions over some failures, so they didn't explicitly lie to hide it, but it was not spoken about much.
>They could have done it secretly.
They had plans to retrofit reactors one by one during scheduled downtime over some years without raising any alarm.
But the irony of this reality was such that 25-26 April 1986 was the night when Chernobyl 4 was scheduled to shut down for maintanance (and retrofit) and it was a common practice to run some non-standard tests during shutdown. What a sad fucking joke.
Obviously, this disaster uncovered all the information that Ministry of Medium Machine Building tried to keep undisclosed.
In attempt to cover itself this ministry desperately searched for any clues that could let it blame someone else during investigation. So they blamed station personnel and their main version of disaster was that Dyatlov and his crew, who were technically under different ministry - Ministry of Energy and Electrification, fucked up. Nobody actually truly knows if they did or didn't, but even if they did - Ministry of Medium Machine Building still fucked up with these reactors big time.
Ministry of Energy and Electrification had smaller and weaker position, so they swallowed the blame and Dyatlov with others was trialed and found guilty.
After USSR broke up undeniable proofs of Ministry of Medium Machine Building epic fails surfaced again, but it was already too late. However, Dyatlov was amnestied after 3 years, in 1990.
>3. Containment is a fucking cunt to build, but it is robust as fuck, didn't even melt and kept all the shit except some that was flushed out with coolant inside.
Would the TMI containment really be able to stop an explosion like this, though? I get that it's a massive pressure vessel but everything has a limit and they had to let the TMI coolant out to prevent growing overpressure blowing it up later anyway.
Just type LIES! 200x.

TMI had a negative void coefficient and couldn't blow up like that. LoC means a meltdown, but not a bomb.

>"more reliable"
Did you not read the run down, watch the show, or learn anything about Chernobyl and TMI?
Reminder that Bryukhanov literally did nothing wrong. He didn't just take Fomin's word that it was ok to delay the test, but turned to a highly experienced man like Dyatlov for the answer, and got fucked by it.
Imagine 3 mile island as being a bottle of diet cola with the cap on it loosely. If it tips over it makes a mess but is for the most part contained to just where it leaked out the loose cap.
Chernobyl was like if you took the diet cola, added a mentos (the graphite tipped rod) then sprayed it everywhere around the room, and the room was Ukraine
What am I looking at at 0:28? Is that the reactor hall after the lid was blown off? In slow motion I guess?

He didn't drive to the scene and find out if there was graphite on the ground or not. It was his responsibility to give an accurate report to Moscow. He fucked up big time.
that was one of the things they were worried about during TMI, but IIRC it was discovered afterwards that something like that is rarely possible with the way it was designed. the main concern is it melting through the containment like in fukushima. (its been awhile since i looked into TMI so dont quote me on that)
plus, with TMI, it wasnt just the reactor that had shielding, it was also the building itself that was reinforced to withstand blasts, from both inside and out. (here's a vid of a section of a similar section of reactor wall being hit with an F-4 phantom at 500mph youtube.com
The 1000 ton "lid" was flipped upside down and fell at an angle back into the reactor vessel. That's why you can see all the control rods and fuel/water channels pointing upward.
why do you ask this every thread?
Is Gone With the Wind off topic in Yea Forums -- Television & Film? Is Saved By the Bell? Roseanne? M*A*S*H?
Face it tripfag, /RBMK/ is not off topic in Yea Forums and is here to stay for at least a little while. Sit back, enjoy the spicy memes, and take the fuel rod out of your ass before you get 3.6 Rontgen.
This reminds me of how my mother hated Ghandi because they "spoiled the ending" at the start.
F
When 3 Mile Island kino?
Three Mile Island is boring, what is there to talk about?
I'm confused. Everyone kept insisting that RBMK reactors were perfect. But then they said the whole reason of the accident was they kept trying to do a test about a problem of if you lose power it takes too long for the diesel backups to kick in so they had to see if the turbines kept spinning long enough. That seems like a big flaw? But also why hadn't they ever done the test at the other RBMK reactors built before Chernobyl?
id rather watch fukushima so at least we could get tsunami kino at the same time
>Hey Sitnikov ? Go eat a fatal dose of radiation to the face then come back tell me if the core is gone
>Ok I just did it, the core is gone
>Yeah I dont think so, Imma just tell Moscow it's the tank just incase, no need to alarm anyone
fuck off tripfag
Because the Russian mentality is "who cares as long as it works, and if it breaks we'll fix it anyway"
It wasn't perfect, but since Moscow said it was perfect it was
>t. Bryukhanov
That's the upper biological shield, thousands of tons of steel and concrete that all the fuel and control pipes feed through to reach the core. The first explosion lifted it up in the air and it landed on its side leaving the core exposed.
IMO Dyatlov should have just proceeded with routine shutdown without trying to pull that turbine experiment that planned by his superiors, but all reports and records on him suggest that he was too proud, arrogant and stubborn to voluntarily give up on this task and face the consequences of being shitted on by big "nachalnik".
Man certaily was not a blameless angel, but was not a demon as official soviet version made him look like either. Ministry of Medium Machine Building should have been thoroughly investigated and responsible people should have been trialed in the same room with him.
But USSR was adamant on covering up faults of the system and it's ruling figures while 'blaming the switchman' for it's entire history.
It was never just the USSR
Look at the Challenger disaster, same exact institutional negligence that killed the same amount of people
Fukushima is a good story but is it enough for 5+ episodes?
>by having it spoken in Ukranian
Except the USSR aggresively stamped out any teaching of or speaking of Ukranian. It only experienced a revival after Ukraine became independent.
would a PWR even have remotely this close of a catastrophic failure as the rbmk1000? they operate differently but what conditions would be surmised for such a catastrophic event to occur? i live down wind of one. North Anna Nuclear Station actually
don't worry only 3.6 roentgen
what would have to occur for a PWR reactor to have a catastrophic failure such as the RBMK?
No they didn't, but Russian was the de facto official language so all the soviet republic learned to speak it. Reminder that Belorussian is still second to Russian in popularity even in Belarus itself.
She had a long day, wanted to have a peaceful beer downstairs but a stranger started talking to her so she tensed up and left. Girls are autistic too, don't worry about it.
The Virgin RBMK: oops my reactor turned into a bomb
The Chad PACER: use my bombs as a reactor
The real problem with adapting Fukushima by HBO is not the content, I'm sure there's enough stories to go around with
it's that you can't use english speaking actors with a british accent. So what would you do? use Japanese actors and sub everything? Force them to speak engrish? Dub everything? Would that be nearly as popular as Chernobyl?
yeah, it's a disaster that's not just about the nuke plant, watch some of the crazy streetview footage out there
i dont care about popularity so letters from iwo jima style would be pretty kino
I live close to this
Will graphite get a redemption arc in season 2?
>I dont care about popularity
touché
>which literally means nothing to me. It’s actually my objective.
What do people mean by Jared Harris confusing women?
>Nuclear power is bad!
>If you take the highest estimate of deaths from Chernobyl it's still lower than the death toll from pollution from coal plants in one (1) year
What did they mean by this?
Who's saying nuclear is bad you retard?
DUDE, 24 THOUSAND YEARS!! DUDE
Anyone got the graphic showing actors/people and if/when they died?
That's the generally popular opinion today
Among retards
the show is pro-nuclear though
Y u bait?
>this reactor had a few problems when it was built but they have now been fixed and the design amended so that it is safe to operate and work with
And they would most likely had announced exactly that after retrofits were made to receive the praise and maybe some "Hero of Labour" awards. But when something can go fubar - it does.
Let me introduce you to few principles of average Russian mentality:
If you fucked up, you keep quiet and try to fix it.
If you succeed in fixing - you can try to make it look like it was not your fault or like some unexpected shit happened on your watch, but you saved a day and deserve some praise.
If you can fix but can't make it look like it was not your fault to begin with - just keep quiet.
If you failed to fix your fuck up - find someone to pass the blame onto and keep quiet.
If you failed, failed to fix the failure and failed to pass the blame or hide the fact of failure - you gonna get fucked by the system.
For entire powerful ministry to admit that it fucked up big time and fixing it here and now would incur immense economical losses? In USSR? Are you durak sovsem blyad? That's impossible.
yeah but it could have been far worse
>what conditions would be surmised for such a catastrophic event to occur?
Somebody secretly replaces it with a pre-refit RBMK-1000 and then does the Chernobyl test.
I can't think of any way you could fuck a PWR up as badly as Chernobyl did. You could possibly do a SL-1 and at least wreck the pressure vessel by somehow launching all the control rods out at once like what was done to BORAX 1 and that spherical reactor I forget the name of.
The only "bad" think about nuclear energy is how fucking expensive it is.
Impossible because negative void coefficient
I dont think even pure sabotage of a PWR can
Repeal the 19th
>Furry Henti Transracial Porn
My nigger.
>killed the same amount of people
Chernobyl killed about 60000 liquidation effort participants over the years from various diseases associated with radiation sickness. Indirectly, yes, but radiation is slow and insidious killer.
Worst failure PWR-type reactors could do so far happened in anime land not so long ago.
>Cannot stay on the roof for longer than ninety seconds.
>Morally questionable to send up unwitting humans for the essential purpose of cleaning the radioactive debris because this will surely shorten their lifespans.
>Send up a guy with a camera to click pictures.
What did they mean by this?
Fukushima was BWRs
Conspiracy theory: Radiophobia is actively supported by oil/coal/gas magnates.
She accumulated a decade's worth of student loans for a liberal arts degree and by fuck she'll let you know any chance she gets.
>don't worry comrade, we will not send you on the roof to shovel graphite
>we will send you on the roof to photograph the men doing it
>somebody else will cover your shift
...
and what about fukushima?
Haven't you realized, the NPC meme is true
No there were still regulations for the test, such as the 700 MW or whatever minimum requirement for the test. He chose to do it when it was around 200 against the concerns of the operators in the room.
hey guys i lost all my chernobyl memes
>The character is intentionally written as a bullshit Mary Sue to condense the knowledge of 50 people into one bitch.
yeah but she's got nudes
