Red was Japanese and only got a small cameo in an in-universe ad about humanity's history of Pokémon battles, that's just the generic hometown friend.
It's a chinese movie, Boomers hate jap shit and the critics are against CHINESE studios. Legendary is the first non-american company making blockbusters and the last 2 (pokemon and Godzilla) belong to non-americans. There's no big conspiracy, Toho and Legendary failed to distribute the movies in most markets (Det pikachu had only 8 screens in my 1 and a half million city), and WB half assed their job in the markets it got to distribute the movie, but it was clear that there were no shills. The 150 million number DID include the marketing tho, so it wasn't that big of a flop, but it does show that american critics are against non-american shit.
They did give out cards for Detective Pikachu's opening week though. Two packs consisting of Detective Pikachu and a random Pokemon featured in the film. Got Lickitung in mine.
