So the plot is a large overlapping mess because its not a single plot.
The Bene Gesserit wants the Kwisatz Haderach, after hundred of generations of crossbreeding to get there. Paul is too much of a Undermenschen to Kwisatz Haderach, so that failed.
Paul is still a superhuman once he awakens to it, and starts trying to become Kwisatz Haderach, despite not wanting galactic crusades in his name to be a thing.

The Space Guild has monopoly on space travel. Nobody really knows why. The conspiracy element is great, since only the Space Guild understands how spellbound humanity is from the Spice Melange.
Most of the better quotes of the 80s movie showed how they completely failed to understand that.

Its a social/political book instead of a action/warfare/journey book.
Where a big part of the mastery is that each piece is setup in advance, so there can be some kind of reveal. And it just keeps on going the longer the book series go.
Mentats seems weaksauce until we get to see the first real action of a Mentat.

The Guild fools CHOAM into thinking Spice is a commodity, not the vital resource to rule the world.
