Slice of life

Never really cared for Totoro, despite the iconic imagery.
More of a Howl's Moving Castle man myself. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, ending on The Wind Rises is my perfect Ghibli marathon. It's a great trio of slice of life mixed with fantastic elements that goes from adolescence and adventure, to young adulthood and love, to middle-aged and dealing with loss and ethical responsibilities.
It's hard then for me personally to watch or even care about film's like Totoro, which seems like fluff more than anything. A tasteful approach to a children's film that does very little on the way to actually build up a child's mind in any fashion, but can possibly influence their imagination.
It's definitely got more going on than a lot (or all) of the Disney/Pixar trash that comes out nowadays, though.

It's just a relatively decent plot stolen from a thousand works before it that did the exact story far better, and with a memorable character or two.
It's hones to God trash, and the artstyle discre is jarring.
