the Demogorgon of the first season doesnt make much sense in the wider context of provided by the second season.

in the first season they have supernatural stealth, inter-dimensional travel and healing powers that make them near invincible to firearms, the only way they could hurt one was with some fire and a couple swings of a baseball bat but later that night the same creature is back completely healed. the only way it could be defeated was to be psychicly atomized back into the Upside Down.

in season 2, the Demodogs are just as easy to kill as normal animals and the Demogorgons are just a higher form of their development. all the mystery and intrigue from their behavior in the first season is gone once they become just another creature controlled by the big bad smoke monster.

The Mindflayer is still the primary villain.
There could be more demogorgons for all we know, though they'll most likely come up with something new. The demogorgons are basically just native creatures of the upside down that the mindflayer took control over.

I'm pretty sure they took inspiration from Half-Life, visually and in the story. In Half-Life there is an interdimensional empire called the Combine that assimilates species from the dimensions it invades. There's a group of aliens that escape the Combine by fleeing to the border dimension Xen. Scientists on Earth then accidentally open a portal to Xen and the aliens that fled there invade Earth seeing it as a refuge from the Combine. The native wildlife from Xen also comes through the portal.
Stranger Things differs a bit, but it's very similar. The Mindflayer is an interdimensional creature that invades the Upside Down and enslaves it's wildlife, then seeks to invade our dimension via the Upside Down. The Mindflayer probably has it's tentacles in countless other dimensions.

there is no mystery and the demigorgon was already explained. it's a monster that lives in a mirror dimension. it might as well be a lake monster or a serial killer, the demigorgon has no rules outside of killing anything and harassing a little boy.
