Some of my best friends were online friends, but they've all moved on with their life and barely come online anymore. At the start of my year the best online friend said she was depressed hitting 30 and spending so much time online and was going to change her life. She hasn't been online in 5 months now. We've been friends for over 15 years. It's kinda sad. I thought it meant more but I guess not. I don't have the energy or time to keep up closely with chan shit that much these days either. Life is suffering. I wish I could go stand in front of core-chan.

He's just doing it to get (You)s. Trust me, I know how he operates.

I love this. I mean its pretty close to the truth - it would have been blindingly obvious to ground personnel that the core had exploded.

On the other hand, Dyatlov DID consent to handing the test over to the night shift, DID then ignore the responsibility of making sure they knew the test procedure, and DID essentially order them to ignore every safety regulation the Soviet nuclear industry had put to ink.

And of course he did all this under the false assumption the reactor could still be controlled even if it was abused in the way, because the Soviet nuclear industry had told him so.

i can't be bothered to watch episode 5

I did skip The Horror, though, so I should probably watch it as well

At the trial, why was everyone so shocked to hear about the graphite tips when everyone in the control room knew about the graphite in episode 1?

You should.

They give a rock solid explanation of why the reactor exploded. They cover everything - the high void coefficient, the control rods caps, the lack of a CCV, the reason all of these things were present in the design (cost), the reason none of them were told to the operators (politics masquerading as military security) and the exact chain of stupid decisions by pointy-haired apparatchiks that caused these problems to develop into the worst nuclear disaster in history.

He was the test supervisor, and Fomin was a complete toad (it's not covered but he faked his degree). If he told Brukhanov the night shift needed to be brought up to speed, or that test should wait until the following day or week when the day shift could do it properly, Fomin would have backed him up and Bryukhanov would have gone 'yeah whatever we can wait a bit longer' and gone to bed anyway, because he DIDN'T. CARE.

Dyatlov cared. His problem was that he cared about getting the test done, not getting it done safely.

You were just coping with being a bad person. Those were actually tears for your father that you SHOULD have shed.

I know how it is in the show. In real life though, Fomin had the power and he had the final say on whether the safety test would continue. He chose for it to continue. Dyatlov had no real say in this. In real life, Dyatlov was ordered by Fomin to proceed with the test as instructed. Aside from that he had no real role. Many of the shit he did in the show (like instructing Akimov and the gang to feed water to the reactor) was actually on Fomin's command and Dyatlov was already out of the building.

So does the red box say

>On 28 November 1975 a fuel channel in Unit 1 suffered a loss of coolant, resulting in the degradation of a nuclear fuel assembly that led to a significant release of radiation lasting for one month. Immediately after the accident, the radiation level in Sosnovy Bor, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the affected power unit, was 600 mR/h; in total, 1.5 MCi was released into the environment.[13] The exposed inhabitants of the Baltic region were not notified of the danger. The accident was not reported in the media. (Practically the same accident occurred in Unit 1 of the Chernobyl Power Station in 1982.)

I wonder how different it would have been, if the same incident happened in a 1975 Leningrad.
Who would have been in charge, how different would the technology involved would have been?

The revelation was that the control rods were tipped with graphite as a cost saving measure (to assist the reactor in using low-purity fuel).

This is MASSIVELY counter-intuitive, since graphite is a flux moderator (boosts the reaction) and you don't usually put things to make the reaction HOTTER on the rods you put into the reactor to make it COOLER.

The other revaluation was that the operators didn't know about this, because it was covered up to avoid the USSR having to admit they'd built the reactor on the cheap to keep up with American technological advancement. It would be highly embarrassing to admit the design, a point of pride for the Soviet Union, was so shitty.

Legasov forced their hand.

probably "dialite" or whatever
i should make it too

Why did they frame Dyatlov, were they agents of capitalism?

>graphite
Soviets used unenriched uranium in the reactors. To actually get it working, the uranium needs to have graphite on the fuel rods to act as reflectors. The graphite that's lying all around is mostly from that graphite, you can see it being essentially bunch of bricks with a hole in it for the fuel. The problem was not that there was any graphite inside, the problem was that there was too much graphite, and the reactor was already having an autistic meltdown.

Stalin tried to liquidate the Orthodox Church in the USSR.

The anti-homosexual laws in the Soviet Union were purely materialist and weren't religiously motivated at all.

Homosexuality is a bourgeois disease after all.

That explosion scene was pure KINO.

Doesn't change the fact that Dyatlov gave the orders to power up the reactor in the middle of a xenon pit.

could someone make a webm of the entire explosion scene - from the caps jumping to the Cherenkov effect, completely natural phenomenon can happen with minimal radiation - while cutting out the bits of the operators standing around looking dumbfounded?

It's amazing if you think about. Nuclear energy wasn't the thing that actually made a 1000 ton reactor cover fly into the air--it was just water turning into steam.

I serve the /RBMK/

There was also a technical reason the control rods were tipped with graphite that was not explained in the show.
The graphite displaces the water and stops it from entering the void left behind when the control rod is raised thus increasing reactivity.

Attached: picture116.jpg (840x560, 63K)

I dun get it
so where are you supposed to put the graphite if you aren't supposed to put it on the control rods

In the end, water was real danger all along.

i know the feeling, i've had numerous online friendships that felt meaningful to me only to have the other people just never come online again or just stop sharing their thoughts on things, like they don't have the effort or care enough to talk to me anymore. i guess that happens in real life relationships as well, friendships just kinda run their course. it's just worse when it feels like everyone else is moving on or sick of you and you don't know which because online you only know what they feel inclined to tell you.

Stalin studied to be a priest before the commies started the revolution. He may have had some affection for the subject but state commie shit came first usually. That doesn't mean they didn't sometimes bend the rules. Most communist countries legalized abortion but Romania banned it in order to produce more workers for example.

It's uranium. It's like bunch of pellets held in place by a rod from some exotic metal alloy that can survive high temperatures. They are covered with bricks of graphite because the uranium is essentially unenriched. There's water around it. When they inserted the rods, the additional graphite isn't even that important in making the whole thing explode, it would have anyway unless the scram worked like it should have to, except it didn't and the boron which was supposed to shut down the reactor never made it to the core because the core was already on literal edge, it was seconds away from exploding anyway and the graphite and lack of water just tipped it over the edge, and that caused the rods to lock up.
In the core. There was already graphite inside. The graphite is good because it makes the thing run. The problem is when you don't want the thing run, like, because it's about to explode. You do not want to have more thing that makes it run then, you want thing that makes it not run. The reactors were built in the way that the thing that made it run was in front of the thing that made it not run.
They were aware that graphite makes it go hotter, but in normal operations the spike was negligible. The spike would be immediately countered by the boron rods, and the core would be dead. What they were doing was not normal operations.
The graphite is there to basically lock the system when it's running, so it can run and the boron doesn't kill the reactor, and that when they retract the rods the water doesn't rush behind it. It's not exactly a very smart construction decision, but it is a cheap one. The fucking idea of graphite moderated reactor is about as cheap as it gets, very first reactors were like that.

How did they do that? Is it makeup or CGI?

Here's Bryukhanov and his wife in 97. Bryukhanov was sentenced to 10 years in prison while Dyatlov and Fomin spend their time in a correctional colonies (most probably work camps) Dyatlov and Bryukhanov were released due to bad health. Fomin was declared insane by the communists after he tried to slit his wrists with his glasses. He was probably declared sane after the fall of the SU. Bryukhanov was recorded saying that no one learned a thing from Chernobyl and that it was a web of lies. He also said that other countries are also covering up their accidents as best they can. Dyatlov was granted amnesty by the Russian government after the SU fell.

The reason the crew reluctantly went with Dylatlov's retardation was because they thought they could just hit AZ5 at any time and stall the reactor. They still would have been in trouble but it wouldn't have been the end of the world.

The panic button being a bomb detonator is fucking unacceptable even if the crew bypassed a bunch of safety shit to make a bad situation. It's the one thing that should work no matter what.

The panic button was only a detonator if you let it get that bad by disabling most of the safety protocols. Ignalina knew about the design flaw and they didn't blow themselves up. SCRAM would increase reactivity for a brief period because of the graphite and displacing water. The rods got stuck because the core was already so hot it already started to damage stuff around it.

One of the most common misunderstanding I see is that most people tend to think of the uranium fuel rods as a sort of ultimate grenade ready to just blow, irradiating like crazy permanently. That perception is completely incorrect and wrong. Without the graphite (in the case of RBMKs) and without the water to moderate the neutron flux, the fuel rods are actually only very mildly radioactive. You can't really obtain significant fission with the fuel rods themselves, and it's by design.

Ulana brings nothing to the show.
Aside from her being the most blatant historical inaccuracy, she has no character or character development. The only hint we get that she's actually human is when she's sleeping at her desk. After that, she's a moralizing cliche. Everyone in the control room, even the ones I can't remember the names of, have more character than she does. She's not even a Mary Sue, she's below that.

It would have been better if they had casted a small group of subordinate scientist side characters. It would have been interesting to see how Legasov interacts with his subordinates compared to how he interacts with Scherbina. Or at least we could have had more footage with Legasov wrestling with his conscience instead of being ordered to tell the truth by Ulana.

I'm really baffled how they got it so wrong with her. Lyudmilla and the nurse are both excellent, actually all the other characters are excellent. Maybe she had a different writer, very strange.

Neah. I put them on so I can screenshot stuff and not have to write shit. Putting it in the filename like pic related means half of these dummies won't see it.

Yeah, the thing in the montage is the New Safe Confinement.

It's pretty easy to tell them apart. The New Safe Confinement is this smooth, dome-like structure they have placed on top of the reactor.

The sarcophagus is a hastily-built looking structure that was slapped around the reactor building.

dunno if there is a single show that does slow motion better. its only ever used when you need to think about things and to let the awe of whatever unfolds sink in. like with the bridge scene from episode 1, where everyone who was gathered there were breathing in the nuclear fallout and halving their life span.

Given by how his hair was falling out he probably knew he had some kind of godawful cancer too

She's a composite of a lot of people so she only encapsulates their positive side. Giving her all of their faults would make the character useless. She's mostly a plot device. Instead o having Russian Nr. 1 telling them about sand then Russian Nr. 2 interviewing plant workers then Russian Nr. 3 getting arrested for wating to tell the truth we get her doing that. Too many people who show up to say their line then pop up at the trial would make things too muddled for just 5 episodes. The other guys have more character since they really are saying some of the stuff they said that night like Akimov's "we did everything right".

The new one is estimated to last for a hundred years. The sarcophagus was designed to last 30 years.

ptosis of the eyelid

If there was no power spike before AZ-5, WHY WAS IT PRESSED.

You don't SCRAM the reactor for no reason.

uranium is basically useless and its damage is negligible when it just exists on its own, but when brought into a reaction with graphite (and some other materials im sure), it becomes the ultimate grenade?

They finished building it in 2017. Just came 100% online and passed its first 72-hour trial with flying colors in May 2019. And from what I've read in some places the lifetime estimate is more in the 150-200 years range but who the fuck really knows how it will fare?

>WHY WAS IT PRESSED.
Wikipedia says:

>The reason why the EPS-5 [(also known as the AZ-5 button)] button was pressed is not known, whether it was done as an emergency measure in response to rising temperatures, or simply as a routine method of shutting down the reactor upon completion of the experiment.

If you rewatch the episodes you can actually see him aging as the episodes go on, they change his hair and skin. Really cool little detail

Still horrible I would assume but not "there is no humanity in a 200km radius" of the old gulags. The Chinese phased out their labor camps around 2014. Now they just jail or shoot you. NK still has them of course.

yes and the knowledge from nuclear design school was not present in chernobyl at the night of the explosion. yes, the soviet union was so absurd that the kgb would purge information to keep it a state secret, and yes they would not pass this state secret along to the people working on the power plant.

what are you trying to argue?

I remember I was thinking Jarred Harris wasn't that ugly while watching these last episodes.

Nope.

The experiment was 60 seconds long. The button was pushed 40 seconds in.

>rising temperatures
That's called a power spike, genius

>That's called a power spike, genius
Was the reactor actually providing power?

SKALA says it went from 200 to 400 MW in less than a second.

So...yes.

That's not the same thing.

>To be wary of people who prefer their opinions over "alternative facts" and "fake news"?

It's pretty ironic then, because Legasov was the dissident against the Established order. Essentially what you should take out of a show like this is; Freedom of Speech is the only way to go and Unpopular Truths have to be given a voice.

Depends of what type of uranium we're talking about here. There are many. Commercial nuclear power plants use fuel that is typically enriched to around 3% uranium-235. The two fissile materials used in nuclear weapons are: U-235 and and Pu-239.
Uranium's most common isotope, U-238, is fissionable but not fissile (meaning that it cannot sustain a chain reaction by itself but can be made to fission with fast neutrons). The neutrons released by fusion will fission U-238. This U-238 fission reaction produces most of the energy in a typical two-stage thermonuclear weapon.

Uranium-235 is the only naturally occurring fissile isotope, which makes it widely used in nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons. However, because of the tiny amounts found in nature, uranium needs to undergo enrichment so that enough uranium-235 is present. Uranium-238 is fissionable by fast neutrons, and is fertile, meaning it can be transmuted to fissile plutonium-239 in a nuclear reactor. Another fissile isotope, uranium-233, can be produced from natural thorium and is also important in nuclear technology. Uranium-238 has a small probability for spontaneous fission or even induced fission with fast neutrons; uranium-235 and to a lesser degree uranium-233 have a much higher fission cross-section for slow neutrons.

In sufficient concentration, these isotopes maintain a sustained nuclear chain reaction. This generates the heat in nuclear power reactors, and produces the fissile material for nuclear weapons.
