Which is a shame because comic book Tony Stark is a actually a very interesting and human character with a lot of depth. RDJ for some reason only got egocentric and smug from Stark/Iron Man. Anyone who has read any one of the books would knows how far off his portrayal is/was.

It's cool because of the precedent. Heroes always kept their identity hidden and disregarding that in such a showoffy fashion makes somebody look either smart, cool or incredibly brave.

As for why he should pretend, He pretends because it protects his love ones and people he likes from people that will ultimately have a grudge against him for being a superhero. Imagine if a known cop put alot of criminals behind bars and others are afraid of commiting crime because of him. It will end with the family getting kidnapped or him being outiright killed for revenge.
