so i just started watching this and i'm a bit of brainlet. i have no idea how radiation works. i always thought it gave you mega cancer and you died slowly. is the portrayal of the people in the factory turning red and essentially spontaneously bleeding and crisping within an hour an over dramatization or does radiation really do that?
So i just started watching this and i'm a bit of brainlet. i have no idea how radiation works...

It does at high doses like that
WILL YOU FUCKING STOP MAKING FUCKING THREADS ABOUT THIS FUCKING SHOW
Look up the Elephant's Foot
Yes. A high dose in a short time causes acute radiation poisoning much like depicted. Cancer is a long term effect of exposure.
Keep watching, it’s explained in the show
Watch it faggot
At high doses two things happen: First, your skin gets a mega sunburn. Second, your body's ability to create cells is destroyed, so you decompose like a dead body...only you're alive for the whole process as you turn into smelly goo over the course of a few weeks.
Why does reddit have to steal all our memes?
I keep seeing le 3.6 Roentgens all over the place.
because you're a stupid retard who thinks you have claim over basic shit.
a game of thrones thread died for this
why are people exposed to the radiation get treated like they have Ebola? I thought radiation sickness wasn't contagious
it's not as long as you don't inhale radioactive particles and go through decontamination. those firefighters were breathing in radioactive dust for HOURS and they probably weren't scrubbed down afterwards.
Their immune system is immediately fucked and they themselves are still radioactive for a bit
in ep 2 i think jared harris explains acute radiation syndrome. look it up. the firefighters and first responders were dehydrated and burned initially but after a day or two started to appear as though they were getting better, but in reality the radiation had obliterated their stem cells and bone marrow which is the seat of the immune system so your organs putrify and you basically rot from the inside out while still alive
Cut the phones. Control the spread of memes.
There are alpha particles blocked by skin.
There are beta particles blocked by a few millimeters of light metal.
There are free neutrons that cut through pretty much everything but they decay so rapidly you would have to be close enough to feel the warmth of a nuclear blast to be affected.
There's gamma radiation which cuts through everything but again you have to be really close to the primary source because it does not persist.
The firefighters/staff/etc are being hit by close range everything so they're burning. The danger to everyone else is radioactive particles which travel through the wind/water/earth ie "fallout". The civilians away from Chernobyl have to be defended from this more persistent and mobile radiation source.
Because they're covered in radioactive isotopes and in some extreme cases their bodies are so chock full of absorbed isotopes that they're a danger to others.
Standard procedure is to wash people down with soap and water believe it or not so you stop exposing yourself and others. Oh and your clothes go bye bye too.
Radiation is a flow of nano various nano particles emited by some source. In this case is source is the uranium fuel of the nuclear reactor. This uranium fuel is a piece of enriched uranium inside which the reaction of nuclear fission takes place, each act of uranium nucleus decay is followed up by emition of these nano particles being it electrones (beta-rays), photons (gamma-rays or basically electromagnetic radiation just like light but much much more stronger) or helium nucleus (alpha-ray). So, basically you have a material that emits radiation. This material was turned into dust and small pieces during the explosion and was spread everywhere across and in the places where it settles it keeps emiting radiation thus if you gut this dust in your lungs, on your skin etc all these dust particles keep emiting radiation, killing the cells of your organism. The instant effect happens if the source of radiation is a powerful source and instead of slow decay of your body you literally get burned by hard thick flow of gamma/betta rays which acts like a sun on the beach but much much stronger and faster, like what happened with the dude who watched at the exposed reactor core itself, but not only that, unlike sunlight it doesn't stop at your skin it goes all through your body as it is not very different from air for such high energy particles. So the show depicts what happened pretty well
Radiation is the closest thing to the wrath of God that you will find outside of the Bible, and it only seems to pop up when humans monkey with things we shouldn't monkey with. We don't listen to God anymore though, and decided it would be a great way to boil water.
*pop up in significant quantities
so we should make more chernobyl threads?
Someone get this hothead outta here!
Yes
guys if I were to somehow find a way to tow this thing and bring it back to the US, how much would it sell for given the popularity of the show now?
>muh meme appropriation
You sound just as dumb as niggers complaining that they own the rights to dreadlocks or basedboys getting triggered by Halloween costumes
You wouldn't make it back to the US with it because you would be dead from the radiation.
At a high enough level yes it literally cooks you from the inside out
It's not that radioactive anymore
I was thinking of flying over and bringing some of the fireman helmets from the pripyat hospital in my luggage
They'd probably bring a couple grand simply because of how iconic the event was
Not an over-dramatization. It really is that horrible. It's the real life version of looking inside the Ark of the Covenant.
>It's not that radioactive anymore
The zone around the plant is so irradiated it wont be habitable for several thousand years. I wouldn't be too sure about it being safe.
most radiation sensors trigger at readings of 1msv/hr or lower. Those helmets and everything in that room are covered in dust & still get readings of over 300msv/hr. Why do you think no one has stolen them? They'll destroy your health in an hour of carrying them around.
good luck passing any checkpoint anywhere with something like that
It was more than likely decontaminated before it was left in a scrap yard
There's a reason those fireman's clothes are still in the basement of that hospital you moron
You know what? Go ahead. Please record/stream your entire trip and link it here for us.
A guy already went down there
youtube.com
As long as you rinse em off they'll be totally fine
>I was thinking of flying over and bringing some of the fireman helmets from the pripyat hospital in my luggage
You think the airport radiation detectors wouldn't go off? Fucking moron. You deserve to get irradiated.
>Turning red bleeding crisping
Deterministic damage from radiation.
>Cancer 10,20,30 years after
Stochastic damage from radiation.
