Occasionally some of the jap films are true to the original, in being commentary about something or rather. But the western ones are largely just CGI SMASH fests. A lot of people are shitting on KOTM here, which is largely justified. But I enjoyed it for the most part. It had a lot of really fantastic imagery that made it stand out from your more generic CGI.

Godzilla kotm had a theme, but it was hamfisted and awful. It was about nature forcing itself on us or some bullshit. And the plot trying to over complicated it by having a "twist" where the mom is also in on the eco terrorist plot,and it was totally unnecessary and ruined an already shit story, that would have been better with less forced family drama

The real problem is that when you're this heavy into sci fi or cheese you shouldn't want to tell the execs that funded you that in the end you spent XXX millions of dollars to make what you did; this couldve been a low budget movie with low budget assets and it would've literally been one of the better godzilla movies, but then again the fact that the chinese lady goes to mothra and is there for some reason when she wakes up feels like a huge what the fuck "we're missing ALOT of context", especially since it feels weird to have the inventor of skynet there too

I didnt actually read every negative review to see if they all complained about "too many monsters" and i doubt they all did because there was too much of a lot of other things that made this movie awful and disappointing. It's moreso the editing of Skull Island that keeps me interested upon every rewatch. There are these violent cuts that zoom in on character stares or attacks that change into landscape awe shots. It's energetic all throughout, especially effective in the monster brawls.

I felt this one more than any of the others disappointed me because it was the closest they ever got to making a good Amercian Godzilla movie but the human plot and dialogue made me kinda hate the movie.

From what we see of the monster fights I thought it was good but they kept cutting away to the human plot in the middle of the big climatic final battle for some reason, they didn't just let the action play they threw it off into the background of the human struggle like we give a shit about the humans. I'd forgive a couple jokes for not landing, but every joke fell complete flat. I was in a theater with about 30 other people and it was silent in there anytime they paused for the audience to laugh after the jokes. The only joke that emitted any sort of chuckle from the audience was the part where the guy said "can anyone show me the way to the hanger?" "I can!" "anyone else?" and even then it was like one guy in the back.

They literally say in the movie the Orca is OVERRULED by Ghidorah. A noise is a noise to an animal. Which one will the Kaiju follow? a frequency that sounds commanding, or the tangible, established alpha of the pack that's standing there right before them? Even Rodan didn't pay attention to the Orca after he burst free from the Volcano to challenge Ghidorah. Ghidorah only responded to the Orca to destroy it when it was emitting the same frequency that pacifies the other titans, that keeps them in line, the Alpha frequency. Ghidorah woke them up, there was no Godzilla to reign them in. The movie makes it explicitly clear that they are followers, not leaders, besides maybe Rodan. They awoke after who knows how many years to the call of the Alpha, which was Ghidorah, so they must have assumed Godzilla was kill.

If you're asking what I think is a Godzilla movie with a good human plot I'd say any of the Gojira clones (Gorjira, 84, Shin) Those typically work pretty well. For others I'd say Vs. Biollante, Destroy all Monsters, and Invasion of the Astro monster. Obviously the Showa ones are a tad outdated for a modern audience and would need retooling but the basic balance was there. When you get to the monster parts it's the humans that fall into the background and we focus instead on the monsters but this one kept cutting back and putting the monsters in the background to the humans.

There was something about the human part of the movie that just rubbed me the wrong way, it was irreverent to the monsters almost like it was embarrassed to be a kaiju flick so it needed to make fun of Ghidorah and Godzilla's names and the fortune cookie line and focusing so much on the family drama at the expense of this climatic monster fight at fenway park we've been building up to being shoved into the background so we can follow the humans. It's like they didn't think we were there for the monsters. I cared about how Rodan and Mothera way more than Maddie and her parents.

It felt oddly fitting to have those there while you had Giant Lizard fighting Giant Hydra with Giant Moth.

The Monsters were supposed to be the most important characters. They’re supposed to be expressive and convey emotion. All we got were faceless, emotionless creatures hidden by digital noise.

I'm almost 100% sure the quips where a studio mandated thing in order to "the the marvel crowd". Mike Dougherty's other movies have great dark humor that didn't at all rely on quips.

The story made sense as well, the only issue that I could actually see was the parents bickering, and Mothra not having a bigger battle.I think this story was a true to the originals as it could get for an American audience to still watch it. I loved every quip and joke, and everybody in the theater, me included, were laughing hysterically the entire time.

I didn't think so, I kinda sided with Tywin and Norma Bates on this one if only for the hope that if everyone died the movie would stop cutting back to the fucking humans already.
