Matt Groening is a pretty decent writer but he's never been the force that really propels the show forward. The writing room compositions for the first seasons of futurama and seasons 2-8 of the simpsons were amazing. Some people like to credit David Cohen for making futurama what it was but that's clearly not the case as the later seasons have so many shit episodes.
It was just generic, the characters weren't very interesting and the jokes had the ability to wildly miss.
