I don't really understand why there was a 5 year time skip in Endgame. Five months would be sufficient for Thor to get fat, which is the only reason I can see for needing a time skip at all - that and Hulk / Banner merging.

The talked about putting this into the end of IW. The arguing between the two stops and decide to work together and merge and smart hulk rips from the hulkbuster and beats the thanos goon. They removed it cause it was a victorious end for banner/hulk, and everyone else loses.

Either way the public serves no purpose whether in the movie or the comics. They are just there to get killed during the petty conflicts of the supers, manifest, and provide new supers as required.
In the same way that half of life coming back is meant to be seamless with no issue to preserve the status quo, nothing that the superheroes do actually changes the world for the better measurably. The cheap supertech alone - and many have actually invented cheap tech to save the world - never reaches the public outside of specific disconnected storyline.
