I always wondered how much of this stuff was written beforehand. Not every single line or joke, but just the general premise. "It'd be funny if we compared pop-eye to Jesus and Ant riffed"

Opie was the only one who prepared for the show, and did know what would be good for ant and Jim to play off of. Ant and Jim just showed up, and that was it. You can really tell on the episodes where opie isnt there and there is no format, and the interns have to remind whoever is hosting when there's a guest showing up and when to break, ect.

Why does everyone hate Opie?

After seeing clips of Ant’s show I have to agree, he needs someone to direct him or he isn’t funny.

I guess I was just being cynical and not believing they could be as funny as they were completely off the top of their heads. The conversations seemed too perfect sometimes.

A lot of reasons but it mostly stems from people perceiving him not fighting for Anthony when he got fired. Opie had a tendency to be not only not funny but actively worked to ruin bits. People would overlook this for a while but eventually it became a way to try to drive a wedge into the show. He displayed a lot of crazy behavior in the last few years of the show. There's some truth to him running the show and "steering the ship" as people say pejoratively but ultimately he just wasn't that funny or clever of a personality.
