People arent just hooked anymore by "GIANT MONSTERS COME SEE" which has been done to death. They need something else to bring them in. It felt like they just rushed through all the storytelling to shove all the monsters out there so it felt like a fucking chore getting to the end. By the time they went down in the submarine I was checking my phone wondering why this shit was dragging on so long. They had absolutely no substance to pad out inbetween Kaijus. Yeah, it was just a big dumb action flick but Godzilla can do better than that. I wouldn't say its a cinematic masterpiece or tell anyone that they 'have to go and see it', and I do not disagree with most of the criticism (plot/editing-wise) that I've heard; but I really just enjoyed it overall. it was 10/10 for me.

As far as the American-Made Godzilla movies, I think this is the absolute best one so far, and a massive nostalgia-wank and 'spiritual successor' (in a thematic sense) to what got me into godzilla in the first place which was the campy showa and heisei era stuff with wacky scifi stuff and plenty of monster fights.

The last western godzilla movie tried to focus too heavily on a 'serious' human story and godzilla was just kind of a thing going on in the background, and too fucking little screentime. I think I blame Cloverfield to some extent but all this catastrophe-wank I think pre-dates it; independence day etc... Maybe it's just filmmaking trends on the whole; to be perfectly honest, I really didn't enjoy Final Wars because of all the ultra-camp supersoldier/alien sideplot and motorcycle chases and lasergun shootouts. Hell, I'd probably say King of the Monsters was better because the human-side of the story was a bit more 'serious' as opposed to the benny hill show shit going on in final wars with the human characters and It was like; ok here's some information that has to do with the plots rather than ok here's a power rangers 'minions' tier fight scene in the middle of my fucking godzilla movie.

I had no malice towards this movie when coming in and I wanted to see all 3 of these on screen and knew I had to stick to dumb human sections to see it. But god dammit do these human scenes stick out like a soar thumb. So many plot lines that went no where yet got the most attention and screen time. Constant repetition towards people saying the obvious and stuff that is happening on screen like "oh its awake" or "that sure is a bad thing". With all that pointless shit they could have used it too flesh out the monsters characteristically and personality wise. In ways its worse than 2014 because at least that movie knew when to shut the fuck up and let the visuals take in. It sucks that these beautiful monster scenes had to be shoved into such a bland and tedious script and bad direction.

I hated 2014 for the same reasons you said it was boring but I loved KOTM. The human characters are still really bad but the monsters are handled a lot better and the action scenes are great in a few places. If you're a fan of Kaiju shit you'll probably enjoy it.

This movie was Emmerich tier bad. Just thin and obnoxious characters quipping while periodically throwing an action scene at you without any rhyme or reason. The narrative was aimless and killed any hype one might of got going into any of the monster fights.

You'll love it for the kaiju scenes but thats all there is to it. A big portion of the plot is focused on stuff that really didn't matter in the end and they didn't even have resolution which is fine because your in it to see the kaijus but so much of it is focused on to the point that in between these portrait panting scenes they cut to this bland subplot that just breaks up the pacing of it all (and there's a lot of that in this movie). There is homage to old godzilla which was kino but even that quickly brushes by to get to more dribble.

This movie is just as dumb and obnoxious as 98, you are just too dazzled by the decent CGI to notice.
