Most anime is pretty shit though. When you aren't subjected to a lot of it, the writing and themes will seem fresh and original, but most of it really isn't; it's just a new perspective to you.
What are you in to usually? I find Watanabe's stuff to be really easy for people to get in to due to its Western influence, and the dub quality is typically solid. Then you watch the most popular anime out of that category. Most popular is mostly the most normie/entry level stuff. Or you simply choose a random/popular anime and see how it goes.

Yea Forums is too slow to warrant a generals only board. It's funny it's even slower than Yea Forums these days. I tried to tell them to not allow the cancer of generals on that board and they didn't listen. Many other anons did too. Even Yea Forums is smart enough to keep generals to a minimum and they get deleted when the show is off air, for the most part. Now Yea Forums board has shrunk, many anons moved on and the only ones left just talk about shonen shit in generals. They basically became what they hated the most. Death Note is pretty basic when it comes to delving into morality, capital punishment, and the idea of the ends justifying means. It was pretty much geared to have Light win (before editor influence), there's nothing compelling that can gleamed from Light winning because he doesnt offer a compelling reason beyond recognizing social ills based on what he sees in his surroundings. This really was written as a shonen and it shows.
Start with Death Note and a few classics and just end it there. There are a lot of gems but they're buried so deep under a growing mountain of shit that it's barely worth looking for them.
Watch Legend Of The Galactic Heroes and nothing else.
