Mortal Kombat is just a good movie. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Christopher Lambert are both fantastic, the rest of the cast ranges from solid to mediocre at very worst, the choreography is great, the only real so bad thing is Reptile's CGI.

Anderson has regular work because he successfully makes movies. I don't think anyone can argue he is an incompetent filmmaker.
The thing is, most of his movies don't fall into the "so bad its good" territory. They tend to be not really that bad, and also not really that artistically ambitious. Of the PWSA stuff I enjoy the most (Event Horizon, Pandorum, AVP), the first two I enjoy because they're legitimately pretty good movies. The third one is not as good, but it's not really a goofily bad movie either. Mortal Kombat is kind of unique in his oeuvre in that regard.

I think if he was given a solid script and a decent budget he could make a name of himself as a popular action director. Not a great autheur, of course, but at least someone's both critically and commercially semi popular. Bt as of know he's just the guy who makes poorly written movies on a tight budget and adds some recognizable stylistic flourishes. If that's all he wants to be, that's fine but I could see him doing better. Much less talented people than him have made critically acclaimed franchise movies.
