There are two standard cuts of the film Alien available: the 1979 original theatrical release (which Scott has endorsed as the definitive version, and which is in fact the better cut), and the 2003 so-called "director's cut", an alternate cut which makes some interesting changes and changes things a bit, but which results in a slightly inferior version. Home video has touted the "added content" of the 2003 cut for many years, but something that most anons don't know is that the 2003 cut also subtracted (often better) minor material from the 1979 cut.

One of the best examples of what I'm talking about is when Brett (Stanton's character) goes looking for Jones and steps into the wet landing-gear garage space. In the original 1979 cut, Stanton gets a great one-shot close-up which lasts for like 30-40 seconds, of him just relaxing, acting for the camera, letting drops of water fall on him. A nice long pause before the mayhem. It's one of the longer cuts in the entire (original) film, and a nice beat. Direct close-ups like these are an actor's absolute favorite thing, and when Stanton first saw the completed (1979) film, he thanked Scott for the exposure and great long close-up. This particular shot is truncated/largely absent from the later 2003 version, one of the latter's major defects.

I'd like to remind Yea Forums that the principal seven Alien cast members have thus far (Hurt, Stanton) died in the same order that they did in the 1979 original (ignore the 2003 egg stuff). If the trend holds, Skerritt is next.

Stanton has two other turns which I admire: he's the brother waiting for Alvin Straight at the end of the Straight Story, and the senior Repo Man: (No communists in this car... no CHRISTIANS either!)

Man he was great even in Pretty in Pink. If you really like HDS, Lucky was a pretty good sendoff for him
