Don was a horrible husband.
Cheated on her virtually non-stop. Didn't care one bit about her or his daughter.
He essentially viewed her as a trophy wife and a proof that he's a successful person.
And while that was fully normal in that time period, she was just another feather in his cap and nothing else. He was perpetually emotionally distant with nothing to contribute to the relationship except a fresh coat of paint every now and then.
