Forums are becoming a a thing of the past. It really sucks. 15 years ago something like Game of Thrones discussion would be based on like two or three big forums. Now the "conversation" has moved to Twitter or wherever.
And a lot of forums I used to browse which are still active are full of 30-something year olds who are just hanging around the site, without a whole lot of new blood. So they're an insular little group, and discord is perfect for insular little groups. It spices things up a little for them, but it's a worse venue.

I used to hang out on a forum that was dedicated to the world ending in 2012. When I went back to look for it I found a landing page saying that they were taking the servers down in a couple weeks and were not accepting new registrations, so I was never able to back and check out my old posts.
All those, MOMENTS....
What's better? Discord "conversations" are usually two-line chit-chat without any substance. No one feels compelled to make big posts because it's an immediate tl;dr to everyone who just wants to fuck around. But when you post on a forum, usually you're making a statement in a wider conversation. No one else may be online so you can't have that lazy back-and-forth, you have to make your claim and have all your points made clearly so that people can take their own time to respond to you intelligently.

My favorite forums were Yea Forums hacker forums so they survived past the arrival of facebook for a while. A few still technically exist but have transferred over to new servers with new account registration and the time has long since gone when I could reintegrate myself and request to register an account. I still get their newsletter emails.
