How THE FUCK is nobody talking about this movie? Netflix and HBO shit garbage out by the tonne while one of the best sci-fi films of the decade goes completely unnoticed. It even manages to make excellent points about nationalism and police states without degenerating into SJW wankery.
If John Le Carre ever wrote a sci-fi screenplay then this would be it. Still can't believe how good this was while all people talk about is the shitty special effects.
Because its not a very good movie. Sure its not terrible but calling it good is a stretch. They aren't mechs, they're just a CGI background that you see about 3 times.
Ian Johnson
My friend was an extra in this movie. She says John Goodman is based
Jacob Garcia
why is your image named captive state? also what is the name of the movie?
Andrew Mitchell
>They aren't mechs, they're just a CGI background that you see about 3 times. What? You mean they have giant robots with shoulder canons in the trailer and don't use them in any meaningful way in the movie?
Name one actually great movie with imdb rating below 7.0, nigger.
Jose Carter
What you see is what you get user, its your fault for using your imagination and hoping literally any media will be able to come close to it. He has a ((white)) gf who is a plot point for when the movie needs one. Early on there's a blurry sex scene that John Goodman is perving on.
John Goodman was fucking awesome in this. Never knew the dude was such a good actor desu.
Ryan Morris
Should check out 10 cloverfield lane, some good goodman kino there.
Parker Turner
>What you see is what you get user, well we see giant fucking robots with huge cannons, can I get that please
Cooper King

Asher Morris
>What you see is what you get That's what I'm asking. What am I seeing? What do they do in the movie? If they aren't used why are they in the movie and shown in the trailer?
Bentley Thomas
Honestly the CGI isn't that good and the alien designs are pretty stupid but holy fuck the story is incredible.

Jack Thomas
They're not mechs, they're oil rigs or mining equipment. One of the plot points is that a lot of people and politicians in the US support the alien government because of their resource extraction tech and how much money they make.
Daniel Morris
movie is garbage and i'm genuinely starting to feel bad for John Goodman taking these roles
Charles Richardson
Blah blah invisible dynamite. Blah blah John Goodman pretends to be a collaborator and gets resistance fighters arrested so the aliens trust him. Blah blah he walks with invisible dynamite. >stop my invisible dynamite son
Leo Lee
it's a 4/10 movie in reality
Ryder Peterson
does this movie has cool battles?

Isaiah Roberts
This film has a ridiculously convoluted storyline that makes it difficult to follow and it eventually loses you. The drawn out story and mediocre acting make the film intolerable. It's definitely not worth seein
Xavier Jenkins
I can't even think of a way to describe how horrible this movie was. It was like being dropped into the middle of a miniseries. I had no idea what was going on for the first 90 minutes. Characters just showed up with no explanation and were not seen again. Even more bizarre was that Vera Farmiga and John Goodman were in it. Sad to see this wind up on their filmographies. The theatre screwed up on their movie times and my son and I would have had to wait an hour for the next showing of Captain Marvel. (We live in a rural town and have to drive half an hour to the theatre.) The manager only charged us for one matinee ticket and I still felt like trying to get my $6 back. It wasn't even bad in a "future cult classic" way. I want my 2 hours back. Moviegoers, you've been warned.
Xavier Brooks
Lol where did this boomer review come from?
Jeremiah Reyes
It was good, but it was very subdued. I expected more action, whereas it was more a spy thriller. I still really enjoyed it, though.
Jacob Price
Never change Yea Forums. The inter-racial thing gets explained at the end but don't let a good movie get in the way of being a /pol/tard.
Jose Peterson
It has cool aliens, but no cool battles.
Charles Bailey
Can you please justify your belief that its a good movie? I've got it downloaded but i'm on the fence about checking it out because my time on this earth is precious.
Sebastian Stewart
I might've downloaded it if not for the dindu nuffin proto-ganist. But that was the first time I saw the trailer and it doesn't look like I'm missing much of anything.
Jason Edwards
It starts off slowly and like some SJW bs but it gets better and the pace quickens and John Goodman gives a fantastic performance . It's really a spy thriller set in a dystopian future rather than your typical alien story; The social and political and economic commentary is there but it's only minor notes. Compared to most sci-fi it stands out because of a really deep complex story.
There are some great striking shots but the CGI is generally poor

its sad when the only thing a movie has to rely on is a plot twist, and they have to dumb it down so the American audience wont miss it.

>nigger mc running And dropped
Xavier Reed
Oh phew, I'm glad they had a good reason to include the same exact formulaic racemixing propaganda. I'm sure it enhanced the plot.
This movie was really bad though. I will admit that they cleverly managed to employ a "diverse" cast, but that's about it. The story went no where. I couldn't really root for anyone because I didn't know anyone. The whole time it just felt like some obscure "RESIST" metaphor.

Kind of reminds me of District 9. Didn't finish it because it's kinda boring (reached the part where the protagonist escaped). Should I give D9 another shot?
watched it yesterday. Most acting was shit, notably by the main characters with exception of Goodman and that lady from Conjuring I guess. Story was nice actually, I liked the plot twist, even if they made it apparent too soon.

I just watched this and I can confirm that the 50%~ rating on rotten tomatoes greatly overrates it. I can't remember the last time I watched a scifi movie that was so pointless, boring or generic. Not to mention that the screenplay is so bad that I couldn't even tell if they were trying to make some sort of statement about american imperialism and when the plot was just shitting the bed. I've literally seen zero budget short films with the same plot that managed to be a million times better than this drek.

>Put guncannons in your movie >never use them what the fuck how is this allowed?
for anyone who has made through this thread filled with plebs, cape shit tier idiots and /pol/ers shit posting, here some info on this underrated marvel: - while there is an annoying nigger with white fucktoy, this film has no sjw beyond this opening scene. This is a modern day 'They Live' with a strong anti neo liberal message. They are fighting the plutocracy. - it is not an alien invasion film, this is on a different level. Again 'They Live' without any quips. - the plot is not difficult if your IQ is beyond burger tier - the plan and it's execution are intelligent and engaging - this is high value entertainment - cons: awful cinematography and awful CGI
This movie bombed hard and even normies didnt like it. The main characters are a nigger and white women.
There has been some guy spamming this movie for the past few days but only getting like 3 replies, so i think he just resorted to lying to get replies
Also the whole movie is just anti trump propaganda
Cooper Allen
>nigger dropped

great, although false, your interpretation of the film would make it an even better film. Imperialism is destroying both the objects of burger violence and also tearing apart burger land (which of course is a good thing, death to all burgers!) But really the film is against the plutocracy.

>If John Le Carre ever wrote a sci-fi screenplay then this would be it Continue
Just finished watching it. It's a decent drama, though it kinda drags on. It basically has zero action in it also so don't expect that. Overall enjoyable. Except for the ending. Civilians start fighting back and it's implied this is a good and plausible thing to happen, like the revolution will work. Except the ayylmaos conquered Earth while it still had functioning militaries and now control it, while still having spaceships. Meaning revolution is impossible to win. Fucking hate movies/vidya that are inconsistent like this. Also what were half biological half robotic drones that swarmed Gabriel underground, but then just fucked off?
Tyler Butler
>Except for the ending
It's an unofficial hl2 movie, they didn't want to stray too far away from the plot. Token force left to guard earth, yadda yadda.
Elijah Garcia
Arrested Development
Isaac Adams
excellent choice. very underrated
Nathan Smith
That's why I specifically mentioned the fact the aliens still have their ships. I fucking hated the HL2 story, but at least it had the excuse of the main alien force fucking off and leaving only a token force and their human collaborators. Here the aliens are actively mining Earth while still living on it (the closed zones) and have the means to quickly get reinforcements (the offworld alien hunters arrive mere hours after the stadion bombing) so it doesn't make sense. As I've said it somewhat decent, but the ending pisses me off so much it retroactively makes the movie bad.
Aaron Johnson
this
Jackson Rogers
Well, there's no "quickly" in space. Hunters were certainly somewhere in low orbit. And if we assume that the main force left 9 years ago to fuck up some other place, it would take them 9 years to go back, assuming they would bother.
Wyatt Murphy
the west hates mecha my /m/ friend.
Angel Ward
Not that I'm defending hl2's story. There's no way a bunch of malnourished bums out-gunning even a token military force in direct combat.
>the hunters are explicitly mentioned to be called from somewhere offworld >intro mentions humans getting deported off the planet >ending shows criminals getting transported by the ayylmao ship >the whole point of the occupation is to extract resources and ship them somewhere else >the first commissioner mentions the aliens are actually planning to "rescue" some of the collaborators once they fuck off the now barren Earth It's true that the movie never explicitly mentioned where the main force is or if "offworld" means just low orbit stations around Earth. But it also doesn't show the opposite, that there is only a token force left in the closed zones and another token force in low orbit. With the absence of that, it's safe to assume that the aliens are still the same threat as before. Actually, even a greater threat now that they have humanity under control.
Ian Phillips
cool concept and john goodman was great in it, but thats about the only good thing about it. i honestly dont even remember the character names at all. there was a shot i do remember from it though, they re-used a shot twice in the movie of an alien spaceship flying into space. they didnt even try to cleverly hide it or make it different, its the exact same shot. it was bizarre
Chase Ross
The way I see it, at the most optimistic, the main force is 9 years away and we have time (and now, knowledge about their tech) sufficient enough to prepare and have a chance. At the most pessimistic, "Long as we fight back, we have a chance", which translates to "It's better to die with 0.001% chance of survival than die anyway without even trying"
Joshua Reyes
>the main force is 9 years away Leaving 9 years ago doesn't mean they are 9 years away tho.
John Gonzalez
>last trailers threw in rap music Literally killed all interest for me.
Luke Moore
Like I said, if they left right after the invasion. Like it's a show of force to scare us and then move on to new worlds. It's the most optimistic scenario.
Nathan Parker
>It's the most optimistic scenario Baseless assumptions aren't an optimistic scenario, at best it can be propaganda for brainlets.
Easton Roberts
After every invasion that has happened in our history, main forces left after things have settled, leaving a token force to maintain peace. It's not baseless, just common tactical sense.
The baseless part is that you assume they are far away. They can have reinforcements in 2 weeks, crushing any rebellion. Also you're thinking human history and psychology are similar to alien ones. So guess if you are defending this movie it means is a flick for brainlets.
Adrian Nguyen
that makes sense sure. however we dont know where the main force is staying or how "quickly" they left earth. they might just be kinda cruising around the solar system or not in a hurry. i imagine when they get recalled to earth for military purpose, especially if its an emergency or one of their own is murdered, they will haul ass. so maybe they dont need 9 years to get back even if they did leave that long ago
Evan Barnes
if you wanted actual Le Carre kino you should've watched Little Drummer Girl
Liam Baker
Oh I'm not bothered with "better to die free than live in chains" or whatever, I'm just pissed when such stuff only succeeds because the directors want it to succeed. There is no indication the main force left or that the "token" force living the closed zones is not enough to quell rebellions. As I've said, the fact that the Hunters are called from offworld and that we see ships leaving regularly with, presumably resources and also convicts, shows that the aliens have a firm grip on the planet.
Forgot to also mention this, there is scene that has some kind of 3 or 4 legged walker in the background, but that's all that happens with it. Or maybe not, it's a brief scene in the background and I can't be arsed to find it again.
Eli King
It's not about psychology. It's about the effective use of resources. We still live in the same universe with the same physical laws. Aliens in Blindsight assume we are attacking them with jamming/spamming trash information when they catch our entertainment broadcasts and fail to find any purpose of such things because while they are an alive biological species, they have literally no concept of what a consciousness is. This is psychology. But if you want to move battle units around a planet/solar system/galaxy, there are not a lot of different efficient ways of doing it.
That's the point. We do know that they conquered at least another world (that's where the hunters are from originally, as told in the commentary track), but we don't know how many, and thus, how important is Earth to them. Therefore, we can't know if they will put effort into retaking it or just say "eh, whatever" and fuck off, like a street thug choosing not to fuck with somebody who seems a bit crazy.
Brandon Diaz
>how important is Earth to them. Therefore, we can't know if they will put effort into retaking it or just say "eh, whatever" and fuck off, like a street thug choosing not to fuck with somebody who seems a bit crazy. possible that might happen, but it seems unlikely. perhaps if it was purely conquest for the sake of "glory" or whatnot, but they seem to want to live here to some degree so i doubt theyd just up and leave after expending resources and presumably lives. no way they took the entire planet without deaths on their part, even with more sophisticated weapons and tactics
Hunter Bennett
>we can apply human logic because they are from our same universe >but maybe the rebellion is viable because they're aliens and we can't know what they want or think OK.

Can you differentiate logic of how to move and destroy physical things with physical things and reasoning behind wanting to do these things?
Good question, can you? Because all your argument is based around assumptions about the aliens. Also around stuff that seems never happened in human history, like colonization or razing an enemy city, kill everybody and salt their fields out of spite.
Ethan Thomas
>How THE FUCK is nobody talking about this movie? u so special
From what I gathered we never even tried fighting in this universe, the aliens preemptively EMP'd us and delivered terms and the aristocracy sold us out straight away for a golden parachute.
John Cruz
i guess its supossed to be like a guerilla warfare thing. i guess they expect the audience to think that would work against an alien occupation? i dont know
Logan Robinson
Yes, I can. There are objectively optimal ways of waging war in a given environment, independently of what planet you're from. The reasoning behind choosing or not to do it depends on psychology, so we literally can't tell.
Ayden Bailey
>optimal ways of waging war >with unknown alien technology and biology OK.
Colton Johnson
screencap this (you) it will be a comfort in later years
Juan Thomas
25 million is catering money these days
Jordan Lewis
the planet will matter and if you want to get really technical, the planet is also going to determine the biology of both species. no alien invasion movies are realistic. if they have the technology for interstellar travel, there is a 99% chance that they have the ability to redirect asteroids. even today we can almost do this already. a more plausible alien invasion scenario would be aliens redirecting asteroids onto earth from deep in the solar system, or maybe even lightyears away. drop a few of them on the planet, wait a couple years for everyone to just die then they can come down and do whatever they want with no resistance
Julian Green
What does technology and biology has to do with it? You have forces of different strength and limited movement speed, you need to spend resources to maintain your forces. When the enemy is subdued, there is literally zero good reasons to let the expensive main force just go to waste there for years doing nothing.
Sebastian Jackson
That is a good scenario. But if they wanted to kill us and grab the resources, there's no need to trouble with killing us because you can just grab the same resources from literally anywhere else.
if the alien species evolved in a wildly different environment, its going to effect them on earth. itll effect their technology too. for instance if the gravity on their world is significantly different than on ours, theyre not going to do too well when they land here, neither will their machines. if they never evolved eyes and relied primarily on smell, or a sense we dont haev at all, this could be either very advantageous or a disaster for them
Levi Baker
So it’s a metaphor for the Jews?
Caleb Walker
>What does technology and biology has to do with it? Everything.
>expensive main force How do you know is expensive or their main force?
>good reasons Which good? How do you know their reasoning?
They might want to enslave the local population because reasons. Yes, just killing the competence before it can develop is the most logical scenario, but again, they're aliens, so who knows.
Gavin Gonzalez
I was talking about warfare on the grand scale. Not about any technology in particular. On earth, no matter what tech you have, you have to waste time and resources to move and maintain armies. You need supply lines. Same with space combat. No matter the tech level, the most efficient way is still just bombarding your enemy with nukes from fuck you miles away. I'm not talking about magical super non-scattering lasers here, I think this movie is more on the hard sci-fi side of things.
yeah. i like what 2005 war of the worlds did with the invasion. the aliens using our biomass to spread their red weed was a neat idea i thought. though even that, why not use chickens or any other animal on earth? i believe chickens have a much larger biomass than humans
Jeremiah Butler
Watched it just last night. It's decent. Good cast, great atmosphere, a little misguided as to who is the protagonist of the story, but overall decent. The terrorism scene is really good, both the setup and the payoff. The plot twist can be seen miles away, but it's still cool. Alien design is pretty unique, but I really hate when ultra technological races are ultimately these irrational, animalistic beasts when you're fighting them. Not gonna watch it a second time, but it was worth my time.
Carter Perry
cont. You still have to do orbital transfers, you still need to move your ships, you still need to do all that shit, and there are not a lot of efficient ways of doing it, unless the aliens intentionally do things inefficiently because ???
Hunter Moore
>I think this movie is more on the hard sci-fi side nah. lets be honest here, this movie was not good. john goodman was great but thats it. it certainly makes for good discussion, but it was very poor. closest thing youre going to get to "hard scifi" with hollywood movies today is probably "arrival". books are a much better format for hard scifi
Cameron Davis
What makes you think it's not hard sci-fi? The most fantastical thing I saw was the invisible explosive, and such a material had already enjoyed limited experimental success with our tech.
Aiden Richardson
>I think this movie is more on the hard sci-fi side of things I think you barely read any sci-fi.
Kevin Butler
>show me mechs >never use them -10 stars
Julian Parker
have you tried not being a nigger?
Jaxson Clark
I've read all the classics and then some books written by literally who's. Which concepts in the movie seemed impossible to you?
Jordan Wright
>Which concepts in the movie seemed impossible to you? Just from OP's pic, the mecha. Your turn.
Luke Peterson
i think you misunderstand what hard scifi means. star trek is similar to hard scifi. the novel/movie would focus greatly on the actual scifi aspects, the technology and HOW it works, explaining in great detail. desu its often very boring, but that is the genre captive state is just scifi
Josiah Sanders
chickens cant shoot down your machines brainlet?
Joshua Cook
What a fag you are
Zachary Ross
the tripods in the 2005 movie were completely impervious to our weapons, so neither could humans.
Oliver Green
and yet one is destroyed by our hero brainlet
Levi Wright
I'm sorry, I rarely insult people on the internet, don't take this personally, but are you fucking retarded? Star Trek is on the opposite side of the scale from hard sci-fi, no better than Star Wars. Explaining imaginary technology with imaginary science is not hard sci-fi. Hard sci-fi fictional tech based on IRL science theories, not something completely made up and awkwardly "explained"
sure yes. but you have to take context into account. the tripods were literally everywhere; stuff like that is bound to happen when there were thousands or tens of thousands of those things walking around the planet. the way i look at that is like a factory that incurs a .05% loss of product while creating bottled soda or something. a write off basically
Jaxson Stewart
>hide post :) bye sweety
Nicholas Powell
Sad
Carson Davis
>.05% loss of product Oy vey, literally another shoah.
William Torres
didnt know if those were the right words, i dunno about business or products and shit. basically just a write off for the aliens in that movie. i bet some of the machines just straight up failed after sitting in the dirt for however many thousands of years too
Lincoln Phillips
>show giant robots in your trailer >they dont fight or do anything in the movie
but isn't that realistic, they would be like manically depressed hence the Brother love??
Jason Hall
I’ll check it out-thanks OP
Christopher Scott
what a flop his career has been
Brody Taylor
>Tfw American and no problem reading and enjoying Dostoyevsky, Melville, or even dry stuff like Marx or Adam Smith. >Tfw I've watched Tinker 3 times and always get lost but I don't blame the writing.
Is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the most involved plot ever?
>dindu protag >stronk wamen resistance leader >rap >cuckery >omfg it's not the aliums, WE'RE the real monsters! >muh police brutality Are you even trying? This shit is SJW propaganda through and through.
Leo Long
>the aristocracy sold us out straight away for a golden parachute. Of course they fucking would, look around you, they hate us.
Daniel Lopez
What was the point of the girl when she was underwater,I missed that part did she kill herself?
She just disappeared after that from the entire movie
>you're not actually autistic we'll see about that
Jose Roberts
Oh, no, you're right, the people who think Russia is behind every bump in the night and can't decide how much free shit they want to heap upon niggers are going to take him out with this economy.
>virgin barry economy and 1% "get used to it" growth vs chad DJT 3-4% growth >ouch!
Parker Flores
still nobody answered me. I really need to know that.
>its your fault for using your imagination and hoping literally any media will be able to come close to it.
Wh-why did it take so long for me to learn this
Henry Phillips
So I found the scene, but VLC recording tool isn't working properly for some reason and I don't have any other editing tools on this piece of shit laptop. So you're only getting this crap screenshot. The walker is only in this 3 second scene and nowhere else in the movie.
