The situation on the ground was not the ugly, blown-out, desaturated look you see in the show. It would have felt like any nice late spring day if you weren't paying attention. It also happened because the pilot clipped part of the plant structure with a rotor, not because of radiation from the core affecting the helicopter or pilots. The show created the drama of the pilots dying from underestimating the affects of radiation when no such thing happened.
So it's total bullshit. In fact the whole show has this ongoing theme of people around Pripyat having little to zero knowledge of this magical deadly force when that is not true at all.
the show doesn't try and make it seem like the helicopter pilot was incapacitated by radiation, it's shown from a different angle where he clearly flies through a bunch of smoke, causing him to hit the cables due to not seeing

Maybe a bit hackneyed, but a dosimeter reading in the corner of the screen would be something that would work in a different kind of dramatization about the event. One that would switch depending on the location of the characters, perhaps in ways that underscore how in an event like this you're exposed before you even realize it. The viewer would see the reading jump while the characters on screen have no idea.

I dislike science lady mostly because she does too much despite being a completely fictional creation, which makes her stand out while not being interesting herself. If they had split her into two characters (one more focused on the emotional aspect while the other on the actual accident and how it happened), even if they were both female, it would make me be a little less annoyed by all the bullshit she pulls in the show. Also the whole >she represents Legasov's conscience Is total fucking bullshit, since she is presented as a totally different character with own will and motivation (despite falling flat) and its specially annoying that Legasov was basically neutral on the matter of telling the world about what really happened until she said to do it, now when he ends up doing it it will feel less like it was a conscious decision by him and more like he just went along with what she said because she is always right (just like she was right AGAIN about the nuclear reactor water tanks that he is an specialist about).
