After all, the person who commits evil is only doing the exact same thing you or I do, acting according to the dictates of his genes and environment. The only difference is that their genes are slightly different.
In this sense, you're not actually condemning actions at all, but rather condemning genes that lead to actions.
By this standard, how can you, or I say that we are "good" or "moral" people? Good for what? Good for having good genes?
By what standard are our genes good?
By the fact that they're similar enough to the genes of those other individuals around us that we blend in with them?
You begin to realize that you're not "good" at all, you're just lucky. Lucky enough to be so similar to the rest of the people in your environment that you don't look or act differently.
On the flip side, you could say that people who commit evil are not evil, but just genetically unlucky enough to be different.

Its beyond that, the modern concept of atheism didn't really exist for most of history. It wasn't only that they feared repercussion for coming out (though this was very much in play in more recent history) but until recently, most people were raised in a society where even the concept of atheism was inconceivable before modern science allowed it to enter our consciousness
