Shit on it!

Question for the burgers on these threads
does it make you feel guilty/ashamed about hiroshima & nagasaki?

I'm a not a yank, but knowing what the Japs did in WW2 and what their intentions were - I'd rather the entire of Japan was nuked into oblivion than risk the life of a single further allied serviceman.

>you did not grow up to have a voice similar to this guys

absolutely not. lesser of two options, and the japs were pretty fucking evil in ww2 anyway

no, I've seen anime. they had it coming.

I often think that two were not enough

Why is Legasov so cute and adorable?

You still can, just live in Yorkshire for a decade or so and take up smoking and drinking.

it's just the way the actor is, it was the same in the terror

Cleftjaw?

Beat me to it

Its bloody boiling in here

i didnt make/drop the bombs. why would i feel guilty?

>pusface go and clean the bloody roof

Those were civilian casualties in hiroshima and nagasaki.

there would've been more in a regular invasion

Fuck no. The Japanese were soulless savages with nothing to live for so they would have went on fighting.

2 NUKES, NOT ENOUGH

They were willing to surrender if they kept a part of their empire.
They weren't going to keep their empire.

>I serve the Soviet Union

As an American who actually visited Hiroshima, it's museum dedicated to the bombing, and stood directly under ground zero of Little Boy: The bombing was completely justified. A ground invasion of Japan would have cost way more lives, civilian and military. A few hundred thousand people is a hell of a lot less than the millions that would have died from the fighting and the naval blockade. I think I read somewhere that Japanese starvation deaths would reach 800,000 a month. A depopulated Japan could not provide us with anime or kaiju movies. And without anime, there would be no shit imageboard to discuss RBMK reactors on.

why didn't they surrender after the first was dropped

Reminder: They only surrendered after the SECOND bomb. They are animals. They should have got three just for good measure.

Im not saying dropping the bombs were the wrong decision, but vaporizing tens of thousands of people for some greater good is a dangerous road to take.

There were only three days between the bombs and communications were bad near the end of the war. It took a full day for the japanese authorities to even realize that hiroshima was not an ammunition plant explosion but a new type of bomb

I agree, but they didn't have 3, they would have had to wait for months for another to be built.

Fuck you and fuck the Japanese.

An increased risk of cancer, but relatively normal lifes.

No

here's a interesting fact. Do you know that the Purple heart medals the US gives to soldiers today were made during WW2, The state department ordered several million of them when they drew up the plans for the invasion of Japan because they knew that they would be taking 1+ million casualties minimum.

And the number of Civilian deaths from 2 said bombings is a drop in the bucket vs the 5-10 million who would die fighting.

For those who said "they were willing to surrender before the bombs" No they did not agree to the ultimatum set before them and when the emperor agreed to surrender the Military tried a Coup to remove him and take control of the country to keep on fighting.

I like both characters a great deal. But there's a lot more to Crozier, his growth throughout was fantastic. I prefer him.

Someone explain how the core exploded again. I didn't understand the scene about the graphite tips.

graphite tips bad
water upset
steam explosion

i keep expecting them to stumble onto a ghoul

The US airforce could have destroyed hiroshima and nagasaki easily with conventional bombings alone. Tokio was bombed and more people died there than in either of the nuclear attacks. What exactly changed for the japanese when the bombs fell? They knew that they were fucked either way, the declaration of war from the soviets was more of a deciding factor because their positions in mainland asia were absolutely lost now. The bombs made no difference and were only used as a show of force to the commies and because they buried billions of dollars in the project and needed something to show for. History would have been the same if they attacked the cities with planes

>reactor starts to run out of control
>control rods that were completely removed from the pool are placed back in
>the sudden boost in reactivity from the graphite tips being reintroduced sends it over the edge
>massive steam explosion
I think.

The main thing that confuses me is why they had fucking graphite tips on the very things that were meant to slow the reaction down and prevent a catastrophic failure.

It's cause the water continues turning into steam despite the removal of the rods

While the fire bombings had the same effect of flattening a city, for some reason a lot of people over look the fact that we proved that we could now achieve that result with ONE plane as opposed to several hundred. That's what really made nukes scary.

Chernobyl Season 2: Fukushima

that's a really well-done art style

how can i find a man with a voice like this

Would like all the prequels of nuclear testing fuck ups

I'm still confused though. Is the graphite not introfuced to the reactor on a seperate mechanism to the AZ5 control rods?

uranium is nuclear fuel.
uranium splits "fissions" into smaller atoms, this releases spare neutrons.
neutrons hitting uranium atoms makes uranium atom fission straight away instead of randomly later on.
fission creates much heat, this heat boils water into steam to generate electricity.
enough uranium together fissioning each other is the aim of the game.

but atoms are jiggling about really fast and so are neutrons, so the probability of a neutron hitting a uranium atom is very very low.

enter: graphite. graphite slows the neutron down so it increases the chance of hitting uranium fuel and causing a reaction.

also inside the reactor core: control rods. these absorb neutrons and slow down the reaction in the core.

to make the accident happen they were mucking around and stalled the reactor, some of the urnaium decays into heleium or some shit and thats bad, normally its hot enough and it burns off but it wasn't hot enough so it was unstable. also there are other reasons why it was unstable.

so to get it going again they pull all the rods out, loads of neutrons flowing, reaction starting back up. except the reaction was already running and they didn't know because the measuring gauge of reactions inside were only at certain places.
so they jam the control rods back in to slow it down.

except for some reason the control rods are topped with graphite, so the first thing goes into the reactor is more graphite, slows down more neutrons, causes more reactions, more heat, more steam, more pressure, kablammo.

YES BUT NOW WE MUST CALL ON THEIR BLOODLUST FOR CHINK REMOVAL ONCE AGAIN

thoughts?

Attached: graphite.jpg (320x240, 18K)

Graphite slows neutrons down. When neutrons slow down, they get hot. Graphite deforms from this process, so that's why the graphite-tipped control rods get stuck. When the control rods are stuck, there is no way to actually stop the chain reaction, and this small amount of graphite just gets hotter and hotter. The moment water comes in contact it instantly turns into hydrogen, and hydrogen is very flammable. The reactor exploded from the burning vapor of its own neutron moderators.

To put it another way, which episode 4 mentions the "void coefficient", the graphite caps on the control rods cause a void coefficient above 1. This coefficient is the ratio of neutrons leaving nuclides that hit other nuclei, so a coefficient of 1 is each neutron from a nuclide hits only 1 other nuclide. A void coefficient above 2, when a neutron hits more than 1 nuclide, is essentially a nuclear bomb.

>You know the old russian proverb. Trust, but verify.

The graphite tips displace the water to stop it entering the void created when the control rods are withdrawn.

>watched this with friends today that are unironically leftist
>could feel the tension when the ussr stuff was on display

So If I touch that...I'm dead?

graphite is always in the reactor, its the moderator.
its built in during construction, i doubt it can be removed?
the control rods were never really supposed to be pulled all the way out, so the same amount of graphite was always in the core no matter where the control rods were so moving the rods NORMALLY didn't chnage the amount of graphite in the reactor, only where it was. pulling the rods out completely reduced the amount of graphite, az5 is scram, push all control rods fully in and stop reaction completely, this slightly increased, back to normal amount, how much graphite was in the core.

I did think about this actually. I felt a little guilty initially, then I remembered how much horrific shit they did during the war. All the crazy fucked up experimentation on people, not to mention the massacres and rapes.

This is a random statement that really has nothing to do with his question.

The active region of the control rods were made of boron, usually in the form of the ceramic boron nitride, while the ends and casing were made of a high nickle superalloy or similar metal. These two materials have vastly different coefficients of thermal expansion (i.e. they change shape with heating at much different rates) so an intermediate material is needed to allow them to be bonded. Graphite was an ideal material to allow the complete manufacture of the rods as desired, thus why graphite tips were present as part of the rod design.

I think I finally get it.

not like the americans who never did experiments on people or torture even today lol. oh, wait.

Nowadays you'd have a much better chance to live, assuming you had access to a shit-ton of blood transfusions and stem cell therapy. I mean you're probably still going to get royally fucked up, and guarantee yourself some cancer within the next three years, and the chances of death within a week are still high, but you'd have a chance.

If you're talking about Abu Ghraib, you're completely retarded. What the japs did in Unit 731 was 100x times worse. And also, no one died in Abu Ghraib.

The reactor core itself is a stack of graphite. It stays in place during operation. No other graphite is introduced into the reactor during operation either, aside from the graphite material on the ends of the boron portion of the control rods.

All the control rods are just control rods, usually independently controlled with degree of insertion. There aren't certain ones tied to a single button that are different from the normal operation rods. That button simply overrides individual rod control settings and begins insertion of every single control rod simultaneously. When pressed, all rods began advancing at once so their graphite tips all entered the active core together, displacing the neutron absorbing water in the process, and moderating the neutrons so they were at ideal velocities for reacting with the fuel rods.

It's a combination of the sacrifices the soviets were willing to make and the cruel reality of the disaster. Irridiated animals migrating out of the exclusion zone and putting other people at risk was a dangerous factor and having people to cull any animals was historically necessary and also properly showed the viewer how shitty the process of 'liquidating' chernobyl was, that random people in the Soviet Union were drafted to be exposed to this.

That was a massive exaggeration, people have run the math and the steam explosion would have been of 0.1 kiloton.

Still, the problem wouldnt be the explosion itself, but that much more radioactive material would have been liberated into the atmosphere.

You're mixing things up here. The void coefficient is inherent to the reactor operating mode and not the graphite tipped rods.

The reactor runs using graphite moderated neutrons that are shielded by water. The graphite gets the neutrons to the right speeds to interact with the fuel elements. Where there is water, however, the neutrons are somewhat attenuated, so there will be fewer available for reacting with fuel. When steam bubble voids form, that attenuation goes away, and reactivity increases. A positive correlation between voids and reactivity, thus a "positive void coefficient".

This is unlike water moderated reactors, where the water itself is used to provide ideal neutron speeds, and when steam bubble voids form, the neutrons are no longer moderated properly for the fuel and reactivity goes down. A negative correlation between voids and reactivity. Thus a negative void coefficient.

So the intense boiling when the reactor heat rate increased caused more voids. The control rod tips also displaced water, creating an effective void too. Plus, the graphite provided more moderator to help make more neutrons reach the appropriate velocity for reacting with the fuel.

So yeah, you were just mixing two different issues together a bit and I wanted to clarify that there were two independent mechanisms in play.

>Adding graphite to a graphite moderated reactor -> Power Increase
>Making bigger steam bubbles or displacing water in a positive void coefficient reactor -> Power increase

Should finish with:
>... of this type.

It's still an inherently unstable reactor design. At its root it relies on active control measures, and can never really be viewed as an inherently safe type like water-moderated reactors within containment vessels. RBMKs are not good, but not terrible.

Holy fuck.

I wasn't alive back then so no. Also nuking them brought some of the best things into the world so not guilty one bit. I would have dropped the bomb myself if I had known what they'd contribute after desu

First explosion was definitively steam, second was likely hydrogen but could have also been steam AFAIK

Yep. If the bombs hadn't dropped Godzilla wouldn't even have been a thing. Well, maybe cuz the guy who thought of him based it on the boat crew that got too close to a nuke test and not the bombs after the city but you never know.

at this point if the iraqis and vietnamese can kick you out anyone can

most of Japanese culture wouldn't have been a thing

Okay put the kettle on and then when it starts steaming plug up the hole completely so no steam can escape and keep turning the heat up. That's kind of how it happened

Shelby Foote pulled it off fairly well. As for famous scientists, EO Wilson is the only one I can think of.

Nothing to be ashamed of
The US nuked, sure. But then they helped then rebuild going as far as going against their country's own interests (and orders) to do so
Then the Korean war came seven years later and saved Japan's economy and made it better off than everyone else

They knew what radiation was; they were the fire brigade of a nuclear power plant. They went anyways. The knew that they were going to die when they saw the hole in the roof, but they still climbed the ladders anyways because they couldn't let the fire consume Reactor 3.

No. Being a Eurofag with scrubbed education, you probably have no idea how absolutely evil Japan was in ww2.

Not an american, but nuking them was necessary. Even if Manchuria was a significant even, the Japanese by now relied on their defence of the home islands. This was the fastest way to end the war. But just because it was justified does not mean it was just or even humane. It was certainly not just for the people living in Nagasaki any more than a terrorist attack. It is not something I think the Americans should be especially proud of, but they should be credited with forcing Japan to capitulate.

Attached: ww2 in a nutshell.webm (640x360, 2.83M)

What do you think about writer's decision to start off with the suicide and then the accident right after?

The americans at the time certainly were not planning for that, just like Thatcher did not want to see a reunited Germany.

Based

You did everything right, Comrade

yeah except that French resistance chick actually existed (and she was also basically the only member of the French resistance that actually resisted Nazis and helped americans rather than collaborating with them instantly)

Why don't terrorists try to bomb a nuclear power plant

I am starting to think that Chernobyl in general is something that was made with completely different intentions of connotations and meaning behind it and partially through the filming style has somehow unfucked itself from some weird liberalistic and frankly disrespectful oblivion of a message.

Can someone remind me why the sarcophagus was needed? Is it because there's a risk of something melting down or just because the reactor is still emitting radiation into the air for many years to come?

imagine a car where the brakes give you a slight acceleration before actually braking. like you go 100 mph, press the breaks, it makes you go to 110 mph for a second and then actually starts braking. sounds retarded right? that was (and still IS) the RBMK. if you want to stop it, it slightly gives an extra surge of power as you push its 'brakes'.

>just because the reactor is still emitting radiation into the air for many years to come?
Yes
>a risk of something melting down
no

>THE ALTERNATIVE WAS BEING MOLDED INTO A SOVIET GOMMUNIST SATELLITE STATE WHICH IS ALL KINDS OF DISASTROUS
Not saying being annexed by the USSR is good, but South Korea was occupied by the US and went into their sphere of influence and that was not a good time for them to say the least.

Attached: 1559079344850.jpg (587x615, 112K)

And what made it necessary to make a new one recently?

What makes it only last 100 years (as planned)?

Mitigating risks.

Attached: 1559347174956.jpg (1024x681, 274K)

How much radiation is it emitting? Didn't people tour the reactor 4 building? Even the elephant foot is only emitting like 4sv/hour at this point or something. Does that all leak out eventually if not sealed?

>some weird liberalistic and frankly disrespectful oblivion of a message
The fuck are you talking about? Mazin has been very open about what the message of Chernobyl is: the price of lies and ignoring experts in the name of political expediency is catastrophe of previously unknown scale.

The dog killing scenes were just there to show another facet of the cost: men having to go around and shoot trusting former pets to prevent them from spreading the contamination as they die a painful death. Killing living things that trust you implicitly over and over exacts a humongous toll on your soul, and it's why shelter euthanasia techs don't stay very long in that job before being rotated out. And that's just putting them to sleep, not straight-up shooting them.

how on earth did people get so sick from 3.6 roentgen?

Americans have supported people that did that

>And what made it necessary to make a new one recently?
It was built on half blown up crumbling infrastucture and was falling apart.

Attached: 1518533780136.gif (1200x832, 925K)

DESU the biggest crime of the atomic bombings of Japan was that the atom bomb almost completely eradicated Christianity in the country.
For centuries, Catholic crypto-Christianity (Kikure Kirishitani - "hidden Christians") had existed in Japan in secret to escape persecution by the virulently anti-Christian government, and it was centered in the prosperous region of Nagasaki. Estimates range that as high as 5% of the population of Japan could have been Christian thanks to secret missionary efforts spreading from Nagasaki. Precisely because it was hidden from view, the American government did not know about it when they sent Little Boy to disintegrate it. Since then, the Christian population of Japan has been rendered virtually extinct without its religious central nervous system, even with post-war American attempts at proselytization.
That is Truman's biggest crime.

Yes.

Attached: RBMK.jpg (1024x512, 102K)

no, it's not as bad, it's actually worse

I what Mazin said originally and I have no problem with that, but oftentimes in his tweets he seems to say stuff that is simply too far into his own agenda, for example critiquing Trump and comparing him to the CPSU. I did not mean that the dog killing messages are liberalistic and wrong, but using the dog killings as a show of the brutality of the CPSU is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. I am relying on what being true about what Mazin said.

Not reactor 4. Reactor 2 has between 2 and 3.3 roentgen/hour inside and is toured instead

>Soviet law dictated that a criminal hearing take place within the same district where the alleged crime occurred

Surely somebody had to have thought "maybe we should make an exception"?

Someone post a pic of that poor bastard japanese man

Nope. Sucks it had to happen but I'm glad its use was limited and people found out about the horrible consequences then, instead of in some massive bombing campaign or a large scale nuclear exchange.

All of my normie friends and family have been raving about how hard it is for them to watch this show, and even though I can take pretty much all of it unfazed, that last scene with Vasily fucking spooked me good.

>REAL AMERICANS ALWAYS KNEW AMERICA WOULD WIN
Im not saying americans were not planning for a victory, but rather they were not planning at the time to including the former Axis countries.
>SK AND JAPAN ARE HUGE SUCCESS STORIES OF AMERICAN OCCUPATION AND GAINED PRIORITY ENTREE TO THE AMERICAN RUN GLOBOCAPITALIST SYSTEM BECAUSE OF IT
Right but they were never intended to be that way and they did not have much of a choice in terms of alignment. Mind you, they were not successful during the american occupation, but much later, unless you consider both countries still occupied.

It's just another example of that, user. Being forced to kill trusting family pets IS something traumatic. It's not like going around and shooting deer. You're going door to door killing animals that at first are happy to see you, and then are whimpering in terror because they can't understand why the humans they love and trust are hurting them.

Mazin called it a war, and he's right.

its going to be the trial mixed with legasov testifying what went wrong and how it happened. they're gonna show flashbacks to the operators and it will lead up to the first episode that starts with akimov and tuptunov asking dyatlov what the hell just happened. then they'll show ulana finding legasov's tapes and probably going to the western media to disseminate them.

and toned down from real life
according to his wife, Vasily spent the last few days of his life coughing up pieces of his internal organs, and when she tried to raise his arm his muscles sloughed off the bone.

Mate I know, but if what said is true a couple of posts ago, then I struggle to understand Mazin. That was my point. I have to say though, that Mazin here draws a distinct line between the officers and subordinates, with which I do not agree with, nor does the show display it like that. The two generals shown in the show have done quite heroic things. Colonel-General Pikalov drove a truck to the reactor core to measure the radiation and Major-General Tarakanov instructed every group of soldiers going up to Masha, not to mention Legasov and Scharbina themselves, both CPSU members. But I do agree with the other comparisons tho desu.
