Despite what fags might think, Godzilla ain't exactly mainstream, nor a household name in the west, or even in Japan for that matter - Shin Gojira was an anomaly.
Anyway, the interest WAS there, but since normies can't think for themselves and have the tomato decide for them unless they're besides themselves with hype and/or it's marvel - they decided to way for reviews. And then the rotten rating made them reconsider and save their cash for some crap like Lion King.
And since the """"critics"""" tore it apart over a shitty script, paper-thin and flat family plot, because the characters behave like exposition dispensing aliens pretending to be people - you might say the script killed it.
It deserved it imo, when you throw around and rewrite a script for three years you'd expect it to be at least decent, if not on point. A monster movie is still about the characters with the creatures in the background providing the WOW effect. And since 80% of a Monster movie is still following those people - make sure the writing is at least competent and that the audiences care about those fucks.
Make that happen, and bam - you have KINO.

Pity, because the director, even if he's no prime Spielberg - clearly CARED, and the soundtrack was on fucking point.

The main problem was the advertising for it was pretty misleading. People were hype for Cranston from breaking bad, and the trailers made it look like you'd see loads of amazing kaiju action. Cranston dies at the start and the kaiju action is cockteased throughout the film. People were really pissed at the screening I went to, and they don't forget that.

If you like it thats cool, its a very different take on the genre, but it is a highly divisive film.

General audiences. They didn't like Godzilla '14 much and don't see much of a reason to rush out and see KOTM. Godzilla doesn't have a big enough fan base to make $700+ million with a mediocre movie.

People got burned by Godzilla 2014. Cranston died at the start of the film and then you had 80 minutes of glimpses of Godzillas ankles before you got the final battle with a satisfying fight. And the less said about Aaron Taylor-Johnson the better.

If they end Godzilla vs Kong with those two, Rodan, and Mothra Jr teaming up to take on a Destroyah born from the severed Ghidorah head, that would be a very satisfying conclusion to the Monsterverse

Honestly it was pretty interesting how there was this back and forth between the post credits scene being Charles Dance acquiring either a mutated crab monster that was implied to be Destroyah or the severed Ghidorah head before the movie's release. I'm inclined to believe there was some truth to the former, and some have said the Ghidorah head is a red herring.

This, g14 was actually framed like a legitimate film, the monster action was all too brief but even then you could tell they went the extra mile with choreographing it all and making sure you felt the weight of the kaiju grappling
In kotm there's no weight, everything feels like it has no impact

Gareth Edwards is a massively underrated director. Godzilla and Rogue One are two of the best films of this decade and wildly underappreciated, and even hated by some plebs. I wish he had directed this too.

Definitely not two of the best films of this decade but he's definitely underrated as a director. It makes sense, all 3 of his movies are lowkey with little in the way of the quip-style humor ingrained in a majority of pop culture today, his kind of movie has been getting phased out since 2008.

This had way better fights and ultimately the family drama, even though retarded, was superior to the Aaron Paul Johnson shit in ‘14. The film could’ve benefited from some streamlining, cut the family shit entirely, and make Wantanabe and Dance be the leads as rivals viewing the Titans from different environmental POVs.

Rogue One would have been good if they hadn't fired Edwards so they could shove in a frivolous Darth Vader action scene and chop the soul out of the movie so that China would like it.

Edwards should have stuck with Godzilla and directed KOTM. Even without him though I still enjoyed it a lot more than Rogue One.

The human cast and story was atrocious.

Good guys - 95% non white. 75% of Monarch was black people, and the US army general was a black shaved head dyke. I seriously thought she was a man until one of her soldiers called her "ma'am" This cast is about as woke as humanly possible. hurray.

Effects were top notch though. But too many battles in obscured conditions. It felt like the world was deserted aside from the main cast. Boston was empty suddenly, aside from the main cast running around somehow surviving being at ground zero of a radiation-filled final battle full of explosions, fire and debris flying everywhere. The battle scenes were hard to see. Very cluttered action.

The more you think about it, the more you realize how shitty the plot of this movie was horrible.

Highlight of the movie for me was Mothra. She was way overmatched but had balls of steel. felt bad for her when she bit it.

I think this new Godzilla looks like a bloated slug with cankles, but his fight scenes were pretty well done.

The kid was fine. Not great but not horrible. She too had insane Domino-like good luck. About 30 times she survived shit that would have killed a mortal. Insane plot armor.

Overall, a wasted opportunity. Solid C.
