The Lumières actually only invented motion picture projection, not motion pictures themselves. They really just combined projection, which existed since many years earlier for still pictures, with kinescope motion pictures. Motion pictures should be considered to have been invented in 1888, not 1895.

Edison also invented the first practical way to record and reproduce sound, based on the previously invented phonautograph which in a sense allowed recording, but not reproducing, until recently that is.

It's become sort of a meme to give Edison crap, and in some ways he was kind of a dick, but he also did actually invent and improve a lot of things. After all most inventions are based on something that existed previously.

Most successful people are kind of dicks, because you almost invariably are a bit of a dick when you have the ambition to become so successful. Otherwise you just get trodden down and don't become successful in the first place.

It doesn't look like it's shot on film either, which seems a poor choice for this kind of story. Still, I guess for the time being it still seems above average. Then again, think of the times. Back in the day there was a lot of dictation done, there were no computers, and typewriters were more cumbersome and you couldn't undo mistakes, so you'd type rather slowly, and this fucks with your train of thought. Many people would dictate to their secretary, and she would then carefully type it down. Being able to just speak into a machine that records the voice wasn't that bad of an idea. My boomer dad used a tape recorder for dictation into the 1990s, when typewriters where still common in the office. That way you could first record your letter or whatever, then type it down carefully. It's easier to type on a pc because you don't have to watch for mistakes, capital letters, etc., and can just edit it afterwards. But re-doing a whole letter because of one typo on a typewriter is a fucking chore. And you won't use liquid paper on a fancy letter you're sending.
OTOH the idea of recorded music was really unheard of. Instead there were lots of small bands that would play, in the park, in the square, or people would just sing for the neighbourhood or play instruments. We can't really fathom how music was treated in those days, playing an instrument was much more relevant than nowadays just to provide casual entertainment. Here's what Sousa said once:
