I am against any removal of statues of historical significance. Those statues are an important part of the history of the country and a symbol of culture. I haven't read up much on what happened after the removal but I hope they at least are displayed in a museum somewhere.

The KKK has three phases. As I roughly remember:

Phase 1. Reconstruction civil war era: the real deal. A violent group of sothern former Confederate paramilitaries opposed to the Reconstruction government and its policies. Barely last more than a few years and never that large (in the dozens I think?) and eventually denounced by its own founder. Ends for good.

Phase 2. High point 1911. Said movie fandom. During a high point fraternal order popularity (Elks, Knights of Columbus, Shriners) a guy sees a money making opportunity and turns the fandom of the movie into a fraternal order and for-profit business. He tries to popularize it with business marketing tactics. No connection to the first KKK other than romanticization.
