Just saw it. I liked it, and I thought the characters were fine, but I do agree they're pretty much the weak point. Rick is my least favorite, as if felt like they were trying to get him to emulate the quirky scientists from Pacific Rim while pulling off Marvel quips, but it came off as a bit cringe. I thought the family was ok, but I agree that they weren't really needed, and now I'm imagining the story where if Watanabe was the main character and he has this back and forth with Charles on how the Titans should fit into mankind's existence.
Another criticism I have is that the pacing could've been....calmer. More lingering on the OC monsters destroying cities, more of Ghidorah and Rodan vs the army in Washington D.C, and so on. Overall, KOTM is a solid 7-8/10 for me.

I'm not him user, but I think a key think is movie Length. That is a 90 minute film, vs an 130+ minute film. The human stuff wears on people in that 40 extra minutes.

However, I'd like to think people wouldn't to so blinded by nostalgia that they'd refuse to admit KotM is a better film than at least half of the Toho films.

I posit that KOTM is better than any previous Godzilla film ever. Yes, even with the human story, which despite it's shortcomings still effortlessly clears any human subplots from older films.

I think that just it, they have charm but peoples standards have changed. KotM humans are just bland to many people and lack any charm of the older humans of Toho (even if they were nonsensical). In the old Godzilla films they used fucking swing at each other, they used to bite each other, they used to trade beams with each other, they used to pick up and toss each other, they used to do back flips and land on each other, they used to do tail swings and drop each other on their asses, THEY USED TO FIGHT IN THE DAYTIME WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE ACTION, they used to go at it until they were drenched in blood and looked like they went 12 rounds in the greatest boxing match of all time. Don’t tell me this piece of shit lived up to any of that. All the monsters did in this movie were pin each other down and then it would cut to a scene of the retard whore from strangers things running with her family. This wasn’t a Godzilla film this was a family running away from danger film with Godzilla practicing UFC in the background. Overall a 1/10 experience

And at every turn he tried to fit in more monster content, but was denied (for instance, he wanted Mechagodzilla city's turrets to be little Mechagodzilla heads).

Ghidorah made this movie worth it for me. He didn't completely job and was suitably terrifying and powerful enough to actually have stood a chance at winning. It took multiple asspulls to bring him down, and his theme music makes everyone else's its bitch.

-> Shorten the intro scene so that the daughter isn't actually present when the ORCA is used.

-> The daughter only finds out mommy is on the terrorist's side when the audience finds out, but initially stays with mother because daddy walked on her first

->daddy isn't the scripts mouthpiece, but has a self introspection moment on Godzilla may have killed his son as collatoral damage, but he was the one that deliberatly tore his family apart because he couldn't cope.

->Daughter realizes mommy is insanely evil, and tries to bolt out there. She is initially caught, but some eco terrorists think this was WAY more than they bargained for and fight to let her escape, rather than her managing to run by herself. In the process, she tells off mommy for what she really is.

->She manages to set up the sound transmission, which doesn't affect every monster on Earth (because that's retarded), but still draws ghidora in. She IMMEDIATLY bolts out of there when the setup starts working, so there's no time wasted on her ridiculous survival.

->Both mother and dad think of looking for her at home with no prompt, and it's still intact when they get there. They meeting, fighting on the doorstep and the daughter running away from them is all done without sound, until the house blows up. This kills mom, dad still lives because he was closer to his daughter. Dad does the sacrifice scene using a recording of the ORCA generated sound.

There, it's more to the point and gives you a reason to care.

I also noted several references to Scylla, which kept making me think of that giant squid monster Toho uses sometimes.

It means that a fairly decent storyline (with less decent writing but the mythos are all great) and potential appearances from monsters we love will be lost. I fear that it will always be a what if. A chance that was never taken. It seems that kaiju renaissance is a lie and that Honda was right about Godzilla competing with American properties. The box office result is abysmal and it's only getting worse. It will struggle to make any profit. Godzilla vs. Kong might do average or even good but this isn't the time for these movies. The stigma is still too strong.and the competition from superheroes and nostalgic shot for shot remakes.
