Those two countries seemed to be leaning towards that but Lincoln knew they had strong anti-slavery sentiments and that they wouldn't side with a pro-slavery country in war over slavery.

Open any history book. Lincoln said leading up to the war that he had no intention of ending slavery where is already existed. The big point of contention over slavery wasn't over ending it in the south, it was keeping it from spreading to the new states in the west like Kansas and Missouri. In fact, there was an unofficial civil war going on in those states for the entire decade leading up to the war with northerners and southerners committing vicious terrorist acts against one another.

Read a history book. Union was comprised of a few slave states in the Civil War. Ultimately, Lincoln decided to free slaves IN THE SOUTH with his emancipation proclamation as a strategic move to guarantee the Confederacy could not get any foreign support (nobody wanted to support a slave-owning government). The emancipation proclamation did NOT free slaves in the North. Again, there were some slave states and slave owners in the Union. Not until the actual amendment was passed ending slavery in United States did it end in the Union.

Now I think it is dishonest to say that the war was not about slavery, but saying it was ONLY about slavery is also misleading and inaccurate. Slavery was a QUESTION of federal vs state power regarding property and citizenship. Many of the more prominent Confederate leaders were against Slavery and Secession both, but at this time many people in the United States considered themselves chiefly citizens of their state first and the Union second, so when their state voted to secede they complied with that. As well, many did not think the Constitution granted the Federal government the right to end slavery in total.

It's been many, many years since I read it, so I'm not going to mislead you by trying to remember details, but it is pretty clear about only banning slavery in states that rebelled. This is testing my memory, but I think it even specifically allows slavery in a part of Louisiana that was Confederate but occupied by the Union at the time the document was written.

His March to the Sea had a specific purpose in mind whose goal was lasting peace between the states and a swifter end to the war, the aim being to avoid even more bloodshed. When he went up against Johnston he recognized that Johnston could not win and that the federals could gradually overcome and destroy his army; but he went around him instead because he knew he could end the war without having to inflict even more causalities.

When one takes a step back and thinks critically for a moment it should be clear that if Southerners flew the Confederate battle flag out of support of slavery, that they wouldn't need to be bashful about. If they supported slavery then they'd say so. I think 99% of Southerners will try to write out the Confederacy's association with slavery out of shame and guilt and because they DON'T AGREE WITH THAT ASPECT OF IT. Symbols change, and I think an honest person will admit that today virtually no Southerners fly the Confederate flag out of a sense of racism or support of slavery. They do try to white wash things a bit, but that behavior is symptomatic of the fact that they too reject slavery, but wish to preserve the Confederacy's other, more positive, aspects.

Confederate Officers, real ones who had been in the army, were very disciplined and well trained. However the average southerner rallying to join the Confederate army was not well trained and the new class of Confederate Officers, coming from civilian life, were just wealthy land-owners or businessmen who bought their commissions. Neither group was prone to a life of a obedience and and dirty field work, both being necessary for a functioning army.

Turning southern peasants and aristocrats into a disciplined fighting force was no easy task.

The Civil War emerged out of the major issue of the previous several decades of US History: Slavery.

People get it into their heads that meant that from day 1 of the Civil War and before it the North and Federal government had the explicit goal of total abolition. This is false.

But the North, and the Republican party, were against slavery in a more moderate sense. They didn't want new states/territories to have slavery-the South did. They wanted fugitive slaves that escaped into the North to become free. The South didn't. The South saw itself as a society based on slave labour, the North revered the idea of Free Soil, where free men could forge their destiny without competing with slavery.

So the North wanted to limit slavery, not make it the way of the future, where the South didn't want to live in a country that was increasingly moving away from slavery, scorned them for using it, and over time risked undermining slavery by causing it to suffocate and collapse inwards due to lack of expansion opportunities.

The war started because the Confederates did not want to live in an anti-slavery country, not because the federal government was trying to abolish slavery in the short term. They didn't like what way the wind was blowing. As such, the North's priority was stopping this seperatist rebellion. In other words, at least until the emancipation proclamation, the South had started the war over slavery, making it a war for slavery, but the North was fighting it for the integrity of the union. The North made it their goal to free the slaves after they realised that was the only way to effectively conquer the South.
