well they are? they're the cheapest form of horror next to gore

Definition of horror
>B2 [ U ] an extremely strong feeling of fear and shock, or the frightening and shocking character of something:
Horror movies don't exist, if you're afraid watching a movie, you're a retard.

David Lynch used jumpscares. Mullholand Dr's and Inland Empire's most scary moments are jumpscares

U got me you autistic cunt

mulholland drive isn't even a horror film. and it's jump scare wasn't that bad as it actually had a nice build up. you didn't expect it.
though it had nothing to do with the story of the film, which is why it was bad

>the babadook
this movie had many jumpscares

It's all about execution.
There's nothing wrong with a jump scare or cat gag, but it needs to be used sparingly, and set up properly.
When the only thing the movie has going for it is startling the audience, that's when it just becomes tiresome.

Jump scares are the spicy food of film

>mulholland drive isn't even a horror film.
All lynch movies have that nightmare feel to them and are full of existential dread.
While you might not call them all straight up horror films they definitely have a lot of elements.

Jump scares and gore deliver.

And they can be used very effectively and intelligently.

Some one spent time of their mortal life making this image.

Have taste.

i do feel bad about your ptsd after being raped by tyrone in that alleyway, user. but a cat meowing out of nowhere is not considered spooky

i hate jumpscares because they scare me and cause me to jump

>gore
>cheap
Nah. Gore is wonderful in that it seperates the kids from the adults. I’ll watch a gorey movie, hell sometimes I even go to Live Leak for gore.

Jump scares are like fart jokes.

no, they're just boring and not scary

Attached: 1519552325264.gif (434x434, 60K)

Fact.

Saw1 is a slow burning suspense thriller, the gore is the finale. It's absolute kino.

The executives decided gore and le spoopy piggy boi sells tickets and all the sequels are low effort algorithm produced garbage.

I'm right though.

No you're not

Jumpscares are something that's necessary for a good horror movie. Without them, it's just a lot of eerie "muh atmosphere". But they need to be set up properly and not overrelied on.

>you mean you don't like the 'NUN'? What about 'The Conjuring'? You at least like that movie right? I swear, that one will make you shit your pants! NO? What are you, some plebian?

its boring, annoying, shitty, and bad. found footage is the literal soi genre to end all soi genres

The first Texas Chainsaw massacre movie, the only decent 'horror' movie. If you get scared by mindless and over the top gore and jumpscares then go to your local trash can.

I fucking hate practically every movie about ghosts / hauntings because they have no discernible rules and therefore it is hard for me to empathize with what is going on. Ghosts can do anything and nothing at the same time. It's just so transparent with ghost movies that what is happening on screen doesn't follow any internal logic and is just there to elicit a scare moment for the viewer. Why the fuck do the ghosts always need to fuck around so much, slamming doors and all that crap before they actually do something that furthers their goal.

Reminder that the people who hate jumpscares are the same people who enjoy capeshit and godzilla movies

>Oneitis recommended Us to me
>I watched it, it sucked and wasn't scary
>told my oneitis to watch REC multiple times
>she hasn't watched it
Why are grills like this

You have it the other way around.
People that like jumpscares enjoy capeshit and Godzilla

>jumpscares that follow well built tension
kino
>jumpscares that come out of nowhere because the atmosphere hasn't created any sense of terror
cringe

It's a great movie but I've seen it already. Thanks anyway.
It's literally the opposite you disgusting faggot. The successful horror movies that normies flock to are the ones who rely entirely on jump scares.

ME CLAP AN SCREM WHEN MONSAR YELL AT SCREEN REAL LOUD

Attached: 1506362319693.jpg (645x773, 56K)

I remember seeing Anabelle or some shit like that and more or less in the beginning it had a jump scare in a scene in broad daylight with no build up or tension around it. The jump scare was a dog barking suddenly and loudly at the protagonist. That's all it was. There wasn't even an expectation of something scary happening at any moment (like expecting the Xenomorph and it turns out it was just the cat). It was a situation that happens every day countless times - someone being startled by an angry dog behind a fence. Absolutely pathetic. You could have a movie with nothing but a white screen and occasionally the image of a pineapple would suddenly flash on the screen, accompanied by a scream. Would be a great horror movie apparently as long as it startled you.

>Why are grills like this
>>why are grills that i like, not into me at all

I watched an interview of this guy saying and insisting that he didnt want any jumpscares because he hated them. Apparently this guy is a redditor too

Jump scares usually suck bit they can be amazing if done right.
Yes pic related. So good first time.

Attached: images (3).jpg (480x360, 14K)

Atmosphere alone doesn't make for good horror. A jumpscare is a proof that the threat the atmosphere alludes to is actually real, that there is something to be afraid of.

Atmosphere is a buzzword used to describe the lack of jumpscares in a horror movie

there’s a difference between a good jump scare and a loud noise being edited in in post because whatever they filmed wasn’t actually scary enough to be effective. it’s not that they aren’t “”””scary”””” it’s that it’s a cheap ploy to elicit a reaction

>3.0
cringe and outdated

This, meanie jumpscares make drop my soilent. I hate then and they are so cheap!

here’s your (You) that you desire so badly. I’ve validated your existence when no one else will. have a good day.

Embarrassing

I liked AASB but you won’t find a lot of agreement round these parts
even most of /ffg/ didn’t like it.

yes your post was embarrassing, that’s why I wrote you off with flippant empty words to let you know what a worthless idea of fun you have.

>its boring, annoying, shitty, and bad. found footage is the literal soi genre to end all soi genres
you know that capeshit exists right?

Jump scares don't leave me feeling unsettled. You want to leave a horror film actually being a little scared of the dark home you go back to.

Attached: bait.gif (500x207, 3.06M)

>Why the fuck do the ghosts always need to fuck around so much, slamming doors and all that crap before they actually do something that furthers their goal
because it’s cheap and easy to do. and we all know that jews love being cheap.

correct. you need a mix of both.
which is one of the reasons that REC is so good. it’s a delicate balance.
just don’t over rely on jumpscares because it’s incredibly lame if that’s all you have.

The Problem with Jumpscares are that there is an over reliance on them. The Problem with Atmosphere is it's an excuse to make a low budget movie that does nothing and has psuedo-scary topics.

Gore does separate the kids from the adults, but user I’m afraid you’re standing on the wrong side

exactly, you need a balance of both. preferably with decent actors, an interesting story and a mid-sized budget so you can actually accomplish some of what you set out to do.
which again is why REC was so effective.

Lmao sad

Fuck off The Exorcist and The Thing were actually scary as fuck you're just mad cause not everybody has the attention span of a rabid squirrel that needs loud noises and constant flashes to keep their attention. Faggot.

This list made me realize there needs to be a character "guy who calls everybody he doesn't like onions". His favorite horror movies are Freddy, Jason, Chucky, he thinks hes manly for watching torture porn and slasher gore and thinks he needs to be stimulated at all times through cheap jumpscares.

>having arguments with imaginary people

>thus it’s friggin superior
thanks, I knew it was gonna happen again as soon as I entered the thread

>The Exorcist
>scary as fuck

anyone else fapped to the ending scene?

look at all the movies on there. the chart means nothing, they just put a bunch of movies that are considered good or scary by a lot of people and slapped them on there because they knew at least one of them would piss someone off and thus would generate lots of angry (You)s, which is exactly what they’re looking for because their life is boring and empty with no friends or even family to love them.

Wait, is the guy who made this saying that Noroi, Lake Mungo, Alien, The Shining and Threads aren't scary?

it should just be a different wojak edit, that would be totally epic!!

Evil Dead is all the proof you need for this to be true but this guy is still a faggot

no he’s saying “give me attention! I want attention! I’m unloved and unloveable and I want you to say mean things to be because it’s better than saying nothing to me, which is what everyone usually does!!! feed me (You)s! they are all I have please please please aghhhhhhhh!!”

The Witch had jumpscares in it though.

just be yourself

Yeah that seems right. This reminds me I have to watch Mandy and The Void though.

jumpscares are shit, its not our fault you first touched your boyfriends cock in a movie theater showing paranormal activity. jumpscares are a pathetic gimmick and are basically a kind of baby horror.

The Void was pretty good, would recommend. Mandy not so much, besides the soundtrack

what movie is the third one from the first list

Attached: sssd.png (573x348, 9K)

There's nothing wrong with jumpscares as along as they make sense like in David Lynch films but in modern horror garbage some bitch is frying an egg or something in the kitchen and then BOO, a jumpscare. That's cheap and lame.

unironically the Evil Dead remake.

agreed, Us wasn’t scary but it was at least an interesting concept.

No. Besides there being a necronomicon, set in a cabin. and the tree scene. It's nothing like the original.

this

so these spaces are populated enough that horror nerds can finally get their fucking comeuppance for shitting on jumpscares. the only cheap thing in this discussion is their attempted demonstration of "intellect"

We had this same type of thread yesterday and people still fell for those bait charts.

i'd rather jumpscare fests like The Woman in Black to 'it comes at night'.

being aggressive

I’ve been trying to tell people that it was made specifically to piss people off for months now. but unfortunately people still fall for the b8 all the time.
look at the choices, it was literally made with no actual vision in mind other than “this will get (You)s”
which is honestly by far sadder than the people responding to it

>Yea Forums

Worked

Someone should make a ghost film set entirely in the middle of the day.

Nothing is scarier than the thought of being at home in the day time and there being some demon stood over you while you eat your lunch.

shut the fuck up faggot
see how that works?

it would be cool just to see how the concept would work out.

Mulholland Drive is a perfect example of a jumpscare done masterfully. They’re never that fucking good in 99% of horror films

Nice buzzwords and memes

The first insidious movie has scared me more than any other movie because of the music and sound effects. Really fucking irritates me since sometimes it'll randomly play in my head when I'm trying to go to sleep at night.
youtube.com/watch?v=p_Lfv6Z5l8I

that and the conjuring are some of the better mainstream horror of the past few years. that part where the demon is sharpening his nails always spooked me for some reason, just thinking about what he does in that little room he was in.

Jump scares never are used well is the problem. Gore, yes, gore works well though it has it more often than not falls flat or feels cheap. Please give me a film where the jumpscares actually feel good and organic.

I enjoyed both Insidious and The Conjuring. Conjuring really got me with the hanging woman while Lorraine is in the crawlspace. It's loud and chaotic and all you see are the feet. Lipstick demon behind the woman also got me in Insidious

yes, i watched it

not if theyre dont right. same with gore. you cant make a good spoopy by relying solely on them, though.

Based incel

>horror movies don't need to be scary
well, they don't. the last time i was legitimately scared watching a movie was when i was eleven. if anyone disagrees with this, could you please name a film that scared you as an adult? and not movies that are scary because of what happened behind the scenes, like cannibal holocaust, or are scary because of what they represent, like jack and jill, but a movie that made you scared because of what it is

Jesus this board is full with underage retards

aren’t you glad you asked? I’m gonna keep going anyway

the director is one of the best at found footage, he uses footage from a lot of different places (news reporting/tv shows/documentary style interviews). it’s a very interesting take on a genre that’s usually only one or two cameras filming POV style.
