The only reason it grossed so much money was because all of the hype and marketing behind it was that the 3D and CGI were so advanced and the future of filmmaking. Most theaters didn't even bother showing it in 2D. Practically every ticket sold for Avatar was a premium (3D, IMAX, 3D IMAX, etc) ticket.

If there was a way to compare individual ticket sales (not just box office figures) there's no way it would be the most popular movie of all time.

It's Avatar's fault that every dumb superhero movie now gets a half-assed 3D release with cheesy 3D effects added in post production. Studios know it's an easy way to squeeze another $5-10 out of every ticket.
