5 is perhaps the weakest of the bunch, but still damn great and isn't so weird when you view the show again. I liked it way better on my second time around and am interested to see how it will fare on my third watch soon. The Wire is widely regarded as THE best show of all time and is still talked about today, not to mention how relevant it is as well, while BB was forgotten immediately after it ended. Comparing the two is just stupid, really.

Homicide is really dated now, but it might be the best book ever written about cops.

BB relied entirely on HYPE with its cliffhangers and tension so it’s natural that it would get a higher score. The Wire has none of that didn’t tune in because you were left hanging, you just were invested in the characters and their stories, which is much more respectable imo

The Wire had tense moments and cliffhangers, but like you said, they weren't the sole point of the show and it had much, much more going for it. They're fundamentally two different shows in terms of quality and how they were made and The Wire is surely the game changer, while BB was pretty much a by the numbers show and didn't really break new ground. It's a good show, but leagues below the greatest show ever.

Depends on when you've first seen the show, but I'd say yes if you're doing it once per year or something.

I like this but explain why 2 = 1. The way I see it, Wire season 2 did everything True Detective 2 tried to do with keeping continuity and still subverting expectations.

I haven’t seen TD season 2 so I can’t comment on that. However, I feel that the story and characters in season 2 paralleled the story in season 1 well. Instead of it being poor ass niggers it was poor ass white folk blue collar workers. And the whole commentary on the demise of industrial USA was spot on.

I'm watching the 1st season of The Wire and I just got done watching the episode where DeAngelo teaches the younger kids chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor!

It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.

Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.

Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.
