Also the American commanders decided they didn't need engineering tanks, so those tanks that did make it to shore couldn't advance independantly and were stuck waiting for their infantry engineers, who were on a different section of the beach.

The British/Canadians didn't have the issue because they had engineering tanks attached to their armor squadrons equipped to clear anti-tank obstacles independantly, despite Sword Beach being the most heavily defended beach they took minimal casualties.

If it hadn't been for a heroic effort by the US Army Rangers, the US troops would have come very close to being thrown back into the sea at Omaha.

Many troops on all sides in WW2 didn't shoot to kill. Many didn't shoot at all. This was a phenomenon that was observed as far back as the war of 1812 when muskets were found after battles to have several shots stuffed into the barrel, meaning their users did not fire. And given the lethality of a thousand men lining up mere yards away from one another, had they all been aiming and firing into the opposite ranks the kill count would be much higher. Studies carried out by all sides in WW2 (most famously by SLA Marshall) had similar findings, where many infantry men simply didn't fire their weapons, or intentionally aimed to miss.

Most of the killing on D-Day then, can premused to have been done by isolated individuals like Heinrich Severloh (whose kill count was almost certainly not in the thousands, but very possibly in the low hundreds) and crewed weapon systems like artillery whose crew didn't have the feeling of firing directly at men. As such, crossing the beach was not nearly as suicidal as it would seem, since your greatest threat came from indirect fire like mortars or artillery.

Real answer: The gun ships on the shore were supposed to heavily shell the front line German positions along the beach simultaneous to the Allied troops landing. The idea was not only to obviously kill the Germans, but to force the bulk of them to hide behind cover so that the landing troops could successfully zerg rush their position.

The problem was that a large % of the ship fire was way overshooting the German position along the beach and they ended up just pounding the shit out of the forests/farmland behind the beach defenses, as they were terrified of accidentally killing Allied troops with firing too short so they "played it safe", which prevented them from ever killing any friendlies by accident but also just wasted their time and ammo not actually hitting any of the German positions. This lead to the Germans pretty easily raking them with machine gun and mortar fire.

Combined with a lot of the landing craft getting lost and ending up in the wrong areas, D-Day wasn't executed very successfully in terms of what their original plans called for. It ended up being a victory simply because the Germans didn't have enough men or ammo to ever possibly hold the beach, and German High Command ignored Rommel's advice to throw 100% of all local armored and infantry divisions into an immediate counterattack, allowing the Allied soldiers to keep the foothold in Normandy.
