It's big and beautiful.
This show is great, but it seems they can't figure out that mixing Russian/Ukranian with a majority English show is silly.
listen, we won't bring up Brezhnev so long as you don't bring up Carter. both our nations made mistakes in the 1970s.
this is so profoundly retarded when they're taking the soviet government to task in every episode.
>Call the memebrigade.
the show is english
>COCKLES
>comrades, why dont just nuke the core?
Each episode has a random scene that is in Russian/Ukranian
no one speaks other language on the show. they all talk english
But why would flashlights fail in high radiation?
Fuck this westcuck propaganda shit
Get back to your niggers filming Wakanda-tier shit and don't touch the slavs

This series is more frightening than I thought it'd be.
Skarsgard looks nothing like he does in Chernobyl, what the fuck.
Are you scared of a show?
>makeup
you need to be spat at and held down
Truthfully, yes. The way the horror is conveyed is incredible. Every scene feels like a countdown to a final death. HBO should go into feature films if they can make stuff this good.
In this interview he looks like he has a hangover

Then you get through the first two episodes and semi-decent drama starts

This is too similar to TDKR to be a coincidence.

Then who was the Big Guy?

So they pretty much made the whole 'miners working naked' part up. Didn't happen in irl. Why? Comedic relief?
HBO. Got to tick that full frontal nudity box somehow.
They added that because they knew the fanbase would demand male nudity.
Why didn't they just build the facility in a cave system, line the walls with lead, and staff it entirely with Chechens?
Post based Detroit.
you fucking tits
I don't know them. Fuck them.
This is simply not true comrade. There is only one Chernobyl thread.
Because Chechens only know how to handle sheep, not nuclear reactors. And in case of an accident decontaminating the goddamn cave would be nearly impossible.
It cannot be contained
why did the power surge at first when the graphite tipped boron control rods were inserted (when they pressed AZ5)? What about graphite tip leads to the power surge? pretend im stupid because i am.
Racist and lame.
cringe
Explain yourself Yea Forums.
That's concrete.
World's most dangerous onahole
also bluepilled
I understood it this way: rods push the vapor and it becomes more condensed, more neutrons per cubic meter means it goes critical and causes the power spike.
Somebody fix me if you can.
how tf has no one made rule34 of this yet
i dont see anything
The MSM claims that its not burned concrete
I trust RT and alternative news sources!
You didn't see another Chernobyl thread because there isn't one. There isn't!!!
Graphite is a neutron moderator. It reflects neutrons back to the fuel rods, triggering more uranium decay and even more neutrons. Boron is neutron absorber. It traps neutrons and prevents them from hitting fuel, thus bringing the reactivity down.
the sources i was reading act like the fact that they were graphite tipped is relevant though but this explanation makes sense
>OI MATE ETS 3.6 RONKENS
The accents are atrocious
That's what they should have done. Turned all the water pumps back on... Not scram'd the reactor.
do russian people really walk like this
How did you post an image that doesn't exist?
>There are people RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW in THIS THREAD who haven't watched The Terror yet
Does radiation improve your cocksucking skills?
thanks user. is there a good reason why they were graphite tipped or some scenario in which that would have been useful?
Don't pull that "aw shucks" shit with me, Legasov. You're fuckin' coverin' that core...
So until the rod was fully inserted you actually have more neutrons flying around?
Just the tip literally ends in disaster in this, and many other applications.
>Watching a show other than chernobyl
So everyone in the control room was blasted with radiation right? And the firefighters responding, too? But some of the people in the control room survived?
>Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life

>say they're all canceling their hbo subs
>tell them about chernobyl
>"yeah ok user maybe ill check it out this weekend"
>they all come in Monday and want to do nothing but discuss the show
The spread cannot be contained.
Why does the graphite get so highly radioactive? Does it absorb the neutrons and become a carbon isotope or is it contaminated by the fuel itself?
What will you watch when it's over
Yes. Graphite tips allowed for mercury alignment to be absorbed by electron flux moderators independently
See? Radiation can be fun!

ah what a beautiful sunset comrade
The Therac-25 was a computer-controlled radiation therapy machine produced by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) in 1982 after the Therac-6 and Therac-20 units (the earlier units had been produced in partnership with CGR of France).
It was involved in at least six accidents between 1985 and 1987, in which patients were given massive overdoses of radiation.[1]:425 Because of concurrent programming errors, it sometimes gave its patients radiation doses that were hundreds of times greater than normal, resulting in death or serious injury.[2] These accidents highlighted the dangers of software control of safety-critical systems, and they have become a standard case study in health informatics and software engineering. Additionally the overconfidence of the engineers[1]:428 and lack of proper due diligence to resolve reported software bugs are highlighted as an extreme case where the engineers' overconfidence in their initial work and failure to believe the end users' claims caused drastic repercussions.
The machine offered two modes of radiation therapy:[3]
Direct electron-beam therapy, in which a narrow low-current beam of high-energy (5 MeV to 25 MeV) electrons was scanned over the treatment area by magnets;
Megavolt X-ray (or photon) therapy, which delivered a fixed width beam of X-rays, produced by colliding a narrow 100-times higher current beam of 25 MeV electrons with a target, then passing the emitted X-rays through both a flattening filter and a collimator.
It also included a "Field light" mode, which allowed the patient to be correctly positioned by illuminating the treatment area with visible light.
Fucking lel.
The six documented accidents occurred when the high-current electron beam generated in X-ray mode was delivered directly to patients. Two software faults were to blame.[3] One, when the operator incorrectly selected X-ray mode before quickly changing to electron mode, which allowed the electron beam to be set for X-ray mode without the X-ray target being in place. A second fault allowed the electron beam to activate during field-light mode, during which no beam scanner was active or target was in place.
Previous models had hardware interlocks to prevent such faults, but the Therac-25 had removed them, depending instead on software checks for safety.
The high-current electron beam struck the patients with approximately 100 times the intended dose of radiation, and over a narrower area, delivering a potentially lethal dose of beta radiation. The feeling was described by patient Ray Cox as "an intense electric shock", causing him to scream and run out of the treatment room.[4] Several days later, radiation burns appeared, and the patients showed the symptoms of radiation poisoning; in three cases, the injured patients later died as a result of the overdose.[5]
Best aesthetic.

the "nurse" is a doctor, you dumbfuck.
she's directly called a doctor in the dialogue in the episode.at no point whatsoever is she refered to as a nurse.

This shit has only become popular in 2000s.
Basically you cover the outside of your flat with foam and so it's warmer in winter.
what tHE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?! I'M A NUCLEAR PHYSICIST, ASSHOLE. YOU GO OUT THERE, RUB YOUR BALLS ON IT UNTIL YOU AGREE THAT IT'S CONCRETE
Be careful now, you might hurt its feelings and make it have to post in its safe space board.
ned kelly
the fuck are you on about
reactor 1 got decomissioned, unprimed and de-fueled more than 20 years ago
the only thing that could possibly happen right now, with the new containment unit, is if a terrorist bombs the entire structure with several hundred kilos of TNT
that would raise a radioactive cloud twice the size of the one from the '86 and contaminate all of europe
the 2nd fucking tomb was built exactly because of this, as the first one was failing and if it crashed we would all be dead by now
it's being disassembled now, piece by piece youtube.com
You have a reactor whos already outputting way too much energy (more steam than it should) you panic and drop all the control rod to stop it, but the tip which is the first thing to make contact with the uranium brings it to an even more reactive level and that makes the steam pop the cap off, then when air mixes in the stuff and the heat lights it up it creates a massive explosion. Then you get a core made of a shitton of uranium out of control melting everything around it spewing radioactive shit everywhere.
I don't understand the two guys in the bunker, in the first episode. The chief engineer and the other dude. They see the guys face burnt to a crisp. Everyone is vomiting everywhere. The guy reports to them that it's way more than 3.6 roetgen but they still deny it? What's the point at that point. It's not just going to magically go away because you denied it. Did they think they could sweep a nuclear explosion under
the rug?
completely oblivious
You have no idea. I've seen many viewers from the former communist block absolutely seethe with rage after watching the show because it brought back memories of all the lying, indifference, and even willingness to kill people just so the Soviet state could "save face" and keep playing the world superpower. Many people, including my own parents and grandparents, recall how the government was encouraging citizens to go out and participate in May parades or sunbathe (the weather was unusually warm) in the days following the Chernobyl disaster because the regime wanted to pretend everything was fine. Some recall strange, stinging rain that fell on some of the more affected parts of the USSR that made people ill for seemingly no reason.
Aside from the general fear of nuclear power, the "terrible, monstrous lies" of Chernobyl are probably what scarred people the most.
They say that you cannot touch anything when you visit the exclusion zone but then why the hell are people using their own shoes which get to touch a massive area of radioactive surface? Why don't people get to borrow some sort of material to protect their shoes or something?
iirc the husband and wife just think its a power plant they didnt say anything about nuclear
old time doctor did all his training before nuclear energy or weapons were a thing
young nurse (nurses are well educated, retard) trained in the modern times
>you guys told me this show is better than onions of thrones

You can also see plastic balconies which are recent too. At least they did a good job removing the air conditioners / satellite dishes.
What if we take 450 people, throw them under the new confinement and seal the doors, could they break out? For how long would they survive? Would radiation kill them first or hunger?
they'd die inside
i dont think you understand how strong the new confinement is
they'd starve before the radiations could do anything

Apparently the soundtrack uses sound samples taken from the RBMK at Ignalina, where they filmed Chernobyl.
Half-life 3 is looking good
Also I work in an hospital and doctor can often be dumb as fuck. Had to go help one 35 years old one because he didnt understand that when he used two computer monitors, his mouse pointer wouldnt be on both screen at the same time without duplicating the screens. He had to tale note to remember he had to go toward the other monitor to have the pointer go on it
>There is no truth. Let the past die. Kill it... if you have to.
Damn.. what did Dyatlov mean by this?
Careful with those edges bro
Half-Life 3 jokes aren't fun any more now that the story was released and we know it actually for sure isn't happening.
I've thought the composer was a man. Than I realized male nordic surnames don't end with -dottir
>His wife: There must be chemicals
>Him: At a NUCLEAR POWERPLANT? Lol no go to sleep babe
It's because they know nothing about radiation.
Their neighbours try to get a better view of the fire.
The old lady does not want to leave her home for something that she cannot even see.
Pripyat was a town built to serve the power station, but none of them knew about the dangers of radiation. And the government made sure of that.
Not as good as new CoD
so many people are enjoying this series, talking about it and documenting themselves about nuclear energy
hopefully people stop fearing the all-powerful nuclear-reactor bogeyman and realize that nuclear energy is the greenest and most powerful form of power generation

Chernikov Nikolay. "Liquidators"
Why did the USSR lie to Germany about the true scale of contamination if they were trying to procure a robot to fix the very same contamination? The USSR was a country that relied on non-stop lies and denial to even function. Our workers live like third-worlders in our Workers' Paradise while those in the "rotting West" own cars, colour TVs, and go abroad several times a year? You're delusional, comrade, go to the infirmary. Our production effectiveness is in the toilet compared to any remotely industrialised country and our economic indicators are shit across the board? Time to ban most forms of economics and sociology studies.
This pervasive denial has made a comeback in today's Russia as well, nicely summed up in one book title as "Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible".
Case 1: he was trying to reassure his wife and ease her worry
Case 2: he's an obstetrician who probably received his training before iodine to prevent radiation poisoning was even on the medical radar. Iodine was only approved by the FDA for use in the US against radiation poisoning in 1982.
Nuclear is great. But the capital and cost overruns of big reactors are out of hand in the West.

They had no idea what was happening at that time. And when they realized, they put enormous efforts to fix things. When you compare this to Fukushima, Soviets had much more initiative and willpower.
The picture shows the process of cleaning the walls of the church from the infected layer of whitewash. Such a procedure was carried out in many cities near Chernobyl.

Who gives a shit? The people who pat themselves on the back and call this some sort of triumph are the very same that orchestrate it.

Dramatization. Just like with 30 megaton explosion from water tank.
If I remember correctly that was a possible scenario mentioned at the time

They discuss that question at 23:00 GMT+3 April 26, without reliable data about radiation levels. They decided to begin logistics preparation and make decision in the morning April 27. All that buses didn't teleported, they were prepared in that night. In 07:00 GMT+3 they decided that evacuation will happen. Alarm on Sweden nuclear silo that triggered the shitstorm happened in the morning April 28.

Making her a male character will not fix the many problems with this character.
She is everywhere, knows everything, figures everything out within seconds and isn't nearly as charasmatic as the other main characters.
At least I'm able to tell her apart from the other characters by being one of the few female characters.
Anyone have that image of the real General Tarakanov talking about using exploding PPSH bullets
Cлaвa Укpaїнi!
She represents shitton of scientists who figured out what hapenned.
Those kids look like they were already born with an unhealthy dose.
And that's the problem.
She's an individual as capable as multiple scientist together.
>And that's the problem
It's solution, /pol/.
How do you represent scientists who worjed on this but wasn't main characters in the story like Dyatlov or Legasov for 5-episodes show? You creating a fictional character to represent all of them.
imagine hating women this much
>caring what happens after humanity falls.
also we would probably take the world with us
Well that is specifically for the case that humanity doesn't fall, just (our) civilization.
let's wait until gurl power ending in next episode
It's over 15000!
what happened to him?
Underrated post right here.
I get that why they needed a composite character as having shitton too many characters can be difficult.
I'm okay with her being a woman. It's not that unrealistic for the setting and makes her more easy to tell apart from the rest of the cast.
What I don't like is that as result she is some kind of super human who knows everything on her own and is everywhere where she needs to be.
Like the scene in the moskou hospital where she throws a fit for letting a pregnant woman in.
How did she know she was pregnant?
In reality, it was the female doctor from earlier who said that. She same woman who asked the wife if she was pregnant/had any children.
>implying soviets were informed the same way westerners were
Kill youre're slef
>How did she know she was pregnant?
She saw how girl touches her belly.
Went back home to please his wife with radioactive todger.
Not girl, it was the man-pizza touching her belly
Yeah, I wish the show had put some emphazis on the logistics of evacuating so much fucking people. Shit must have been crazy to organize in such a short time.
Returned to wherever soviet dwarves live.

Soviet scientists in reality (according to memoirs and documentaries):
What is the nature of the explosion?
We must send people to find out where the lava flows under the reactor.
It is necessary to send new data to the institute.
We cannot predict without new data, we need to send people with dosimeters to examine the station rooms
Khomchuk in the series:
YeS, i`ve ConDucted reSeaRch PuT thiS ShiEt HeRe tO pRevent catastrOphe
They could shoot it much more interesting, series 10 out of 10, I do not argue
Im okay with that. Its better that 10+ characters with russian lastnames

I also forgot about that line where she mentions the firefighter's wife dead baby.
Did she make a quick visit to the hospital before meeting up with the rest of the main cast?
