Significantly. The first book is regularly criticized as being a bit of a rippoff of Fellowship. As Jordan got more experienced he branched out into a completely different style of writing. First book is mediocre, second is half decent, half mediocre, the third book hits its stride really well.

Perrin's plotlines are by far the worst, with a few exceptions. Rand's are good but get a bit repetitive as the series goes on because he basically spends all his time traveling around and putting out spot fires, Mat's are entertaining as fuck, but he gets no focus until book 3.

They range from awful to enjoyable. The best are those not focussing on vanilla Space Marines.
For example: Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, Night Lords Omnibus, Ciaphas Cain for some light fun and a few of the Horus Heresy side books.

Wouldn't even be weird in the context of the books, since the Two Rivers is geographically closer to Bandar Eban than to Caemlyn, and the Two Rivers people are descended from the people of Manetheren, the city of Manetheren being the original capital city of what later became Arad Doman.
Two Rivers natives are also described as being dark haired, dark eyed, and swarthy, and aside from Kari Al'thor, Rand had never seen anyone with light eyes until Lan and Moiraine showed up.
