Just got back from it, and I was blown away by it actually being pretty good. After the shit they pulled from last time like this guy said I was seriously worried this was going to be total crap, but thankfully it wasn't. I still think they focused on the human aspect too much, but it was at least somewhat tolerable this time.

One of the biggest things I'm pleased with is the inclusion of the iconic Godzilla soundtracks, and the movie was chalk a block full of original Japanese film homages. Rodan stole the show for me, even though the loyalties were in question by the end. Perfectly captured OG Rodan's power and grace, and knocked the design out of the park.

The worst part of this film was the "protagonists". Just using the two nips as the protagonists would have been better.

I’m gonna be really honest
i didn’t see anything wrong with the story. Yes it is pretty simple, where some evil group wants to release all the monsters, but after the insult of 98, and the lukewarm intro of 14, then retelling some of the simpler stories from Showa seem worth it. There were some dumb stuff, however, like how Maddy was just able to walk from the terrorist base to the announcer room at the Red Sox stadium without being spotted, but that’s overshadowed by the good stuff.
I also didn’t mind the human characters, especially serizawa, Alan Jonah, and the twin. They performed their parts well and had some kino moments overall
It’s a basic retreading of an older storyline in almost every early Showa film, with a simple story and cast of characters, but I feel as if it’s kinda needed after the previous 2 American films

And yet some fans like AVGN pretty much said it was just okay.

There were two black women military women and one black guy. The only one that was incredibly annoying was the SLAY QUEEN SLAY black commander, the other two were fine as no-names.

I completely agree. It traded any pretensions of depth for a much more dynamic story and it was much better imo. I appreciate what they tried to pull off in 14 but they simply didn't execute it well. We're lucky we got as much fighting as we did, it was pretty clear by the end that they were running out of cool combat moments and were trying to out-do themselves way too much.

I think that is the reason why I loved Rodan's emergence scene so much. You can clearly see what it happening, the destruction is showcased brutally well and Rodan's prowess was awe inspiring.

The human scenes were weak and could torpedo the movie. I remember a big criticism of the 2014 movie was every time the monsters would start to fight, WHAM, they'd cut away to some human bullshit.

The director's cut of this movie needs to remove 90% of the human scenes. Serizawa was good. The old British guy (Jonah) was good. I won't spoil anything, but stay after the credits.

I will say this: the director must have known a lot of "little" Godzilla details, or is familiar with all of Ghidorah's past appearances, because he got a LOT of important details right, at least to someone like me who has seen all the G films.

The movie is worthy of a 2nd viewing but I'm not going to see it in 3D again because I think it made the action scenes too fuzzy.

I honestly don't think the human aspect itself was bad, just badly handled. Every time that comedic relief white haired dude was on screen I wanted to die. When he said "oh my god...zilla" my eyes rolled into the back of my head, I started convulsing and my soul attempted to leave my body. But that's... not how giant monster movies work. Even in some of the best of the original Godzilla movies (King Kong vs., vs. The Thing, vs. Monster Zero, vs. Mechagodzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla, vs. Biollante), Godzilla doesn't show up until a *good* amount into the movie's run time. For non-Godzilla giant movie monsters, sometimes it's even worse.

No one said black people being in the movie made it better. We're saying they don't make the movie worse just because they're black. Their performances, on the other hand, is something worth complaining about.

I can't believe they brought back that shitty Admiral Stenz from the last movie, he didn't look like he knew what he was doing last time and this time is even worse, he's going to chew some guys out in one scene and they try to explain and he kinda just gives up and starts nodding understandably, like what the fuck is the point of a military admiral if he just gets jerked around like some wet noodle?

Not the fag saying "there must be human scenes" and whatever else he went on about.
But the Godzilla monsters don't talk, and while there were plenty of moments with characterization with the facial features they gave the creatures at key moments (the ghidora heads bickering with each other for example) there still needs to be some level of narration.
Not "speaking for them" like the mothra twins per say, but just something to keep the plot "grounded".
It's ironic, because despite this being a scenario where everyone wants to watch the monsters, we'd still need to humans or something to be talking for the story to still be considered a "tale".
And yet with shit like the Transformer films (their infamy aside) there was absolutely NO REASON to EVER focus on the humans, since Optimus and his gang were capable of speaking clearly. Which always baffled me.
