Because he’s an actual fan of the source material. He’s had decades to watch and digest the movies. He absolutely has to helm the universe at this point. I was so skeptical, even annoyed when I heard he was replacing Gareth Edwards but god damn was that an absolute stroke of luck.

Ghidora was the highlight and was fucking badass throughout and the fights were cool as fuck. The character drama was a bit shitty and felt like filler but I still really enjoyed it overall. I'll probably go see it again.

It's honestly ridiculous that James Rolfe didn't like King of the Monsters. He likes much worse ones than this.

I want it to be like this. Kong Can't beat Godzilla because he's simply too beefy and tanky. But Godzilla can't beat Kong because he's too agile, and his superior brain means he's too quick witted in a fight. So their battle ends in a stalemate with both recognizing "this shit is pointless" and then the big baddies Bagan and Destoroyah Come out and they team up

Did anyone else find the Steve Martin reference heart-warming? I feel like people often forget about the original King of the Monsters due to Gojira being better, even though it's arguably the version that popularized the character globally. I still argue that a version of the movie that has all of the nuclear sub-text and original scenes, but also included Steve Martin, would be a superior version.

It was 100% better than 2014, but they still pull punches with the action far too much. Every time Godzilla is about to throw down, we get a shaky cut of him doing the first move in a series of moves, then it cuts to human characters.

I was getting pretty fucking sick of it during Rodan vs Mothra. It's pretty simple, you use wide, uninterrupted, steady shots for the fight scenes. Pacific Rim figured this out years ago. Maybe put more money into the CG and less into 10 gorillion actors who bring nothing to the table.

Honestly, I think a lot of fans are strongly tied to nostalgia. I think KotM is better than a lot of the films in the series (better than a lot of Millennium, late Showa, and half of Heisei). Maybe it's just me, but I've been marathoning all the movies before this since I hadn't watched them as a kid and I still have a soft spot for them, but many of them don't hold up at all.

The thing is that I remember most fights being at night. It was really common in Heisei era and while I like King Ghidorah the Biollante scenes have more impact and I think it is because of night fights.

Yeah, it's an example of having non white major players without them feeling like forced diversity. The actors did a couple really different characters really well and they all blended as well as you could hope any people could.

They cut away a lot from the monster fight, but this time they don't cut to someone in a train miles away from the fighting, they cut to people who are in the same place the fight is happening. They're in direct danger and we get a ground-level view of the brawl.
It's not perfect, but it's the best solution for their budget problems imo.

And the scale is fucking perfectly done. There's a scene where Rodan flies over some Mexican city and just by flying by he fucking causes a major disaster
