I actually liked the human stuff in 2014 contrary to others here, and I love how Gareth recreated the darker tone of the 1954 film while bringing a wonderful sense of scale. and visuals. The cockteasing was shit yeah, but overall I thought the movie was great.

KOTM human plot was garbage and I wouldn't have mind if it didn't take up a lot of screen time or dragged but it did. Having said that the monster stuff is pure kino. Fully embraced the genre as whole with genuine love without a hint of irony. Also wish Mothra and Rodan got more screen time.

Skull Island was fun but meh. Curious how Kong vs Godzilla will turn out.

The problem with 2014's human plot is that the humans created a problem which then the humans alone proceed to solve (which is to say, the stolen nuke that was supposed to attract the MUTO and... did exactly that). It's not entertaining to watch characters try and fix their own retardation.

The human characters in 2014, however, were way more grounded and less awkward cringe. It actually felt like a disaster movie, instead of being too eager to remind you this is a cheesy monster flick. Also, KOTM has the weirdest enviromentalist message ever. "In order to stop global warming, we must bring humanity to the brink of extinction; otherwise humanity will be brought to the brink of extinction by climate change." Ummm... What?

Mothra dying and being reborn is part of her character. I agree I was sad she wasn't in the movie, but they didn't introduce Toho's second most iconic character to just dispose of her right away. Also, they introduced the twins in this movie which means they're not done with her.

Mothra at the very least serves some form of plot relevance, there is literally nothing unique pertaining to Rodan other than name recognition. In the showa Ghidorah movie Rodan was actually a big proponent, he held equal strength to Godzilla only he could fly, and he had his own agency in that he actively didn't want to help humanity. Now in KotM Rodan is the most forgettable motherfucker, his entire schtick has always been that he can fly so fast he destroys cities and yet theres only one scene in this where he utilizes that ability, literally doesn't do anything with it in the final battle, and to top it all off this Rodan has no agency, no personality, nothing to set him apart from any of the other Titans. What a waste

I'd prefer to move forward and not just rely on Ghidorah, Rodan, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla as the go-to enemies for Godzilla. Destroyah NEEDS to be Monsterverse's Thanos. Hint at Destroyah in every film, little bit at a time. News reports of trilobites massing on the coastline, sightings of a devil-like creature in the dead zone where the Oxygen Destroy was dropped. Stuff like that.

But if we get Mechagodzilla again, I think I'll fucking shoot myself.

All 3 appear to have survived. It's about familiarizing them to the audience so they can pop up in later films and make even more of an impact in different forms and with different goals

Anyone else actually pretty disappointed with the fight scenes in this one? The scenes involving kaiju where they didn't fight were nothing short of spectacular, stuff like Godzilla flashing his spines underwater and Mothra hatching out of her coccoon were all pitch perfect, but all of the fight scenes felt like such duds to me. The choreography is really boring, the camerawork is terrible, and the lighting is incredibly meh, overly reliant on rain and such. G14's fight scene was also dark, but it framed everything incredibly well and had very memorable fight moments like Godzilla whacking the shit out of the smaller muto with his tail.
I just came out of KotM and can't think of a single moment in any fight scene that stood out, where I can look back and go "awe yeah that was awesome!" It all just blurred together for me.

I enjoyed that one scene with kyle chandler looking for the daughter while the camera spun around him. As for stand out moments, Ghidorah coiling around Godzilla was dope but nothing as satisfying as either of the muto kills. Literally had applause in my theater for those kills but nothing for ghidorahs defeat.

I don't see how Mothra jobbed when she solo'd Rodan despite him being way out of her weight class, snared KG so Godzilla can fucking body slam him through a building, then sacrificed herself to save Godzilla and revived him in the process

What really frustrates me about the human story is that if they had just picked one character and fleshed them out further as a protagonist then the story would be much stronger.
Either follow the dad guy Mark, ex-scientist with a bitter vendetta against Godzilla and walked away from it all only to get dragged back in by his estranged wife creating conflict and drama
Or follow Serizawa and really flesh out his obsession with Titans and his relationship with his assistant(who died so fast I actually blinked and missed it until they showed her being dead in the next scene), his plight where he tries to prove to the world that they're good, etc
The thing that makes these character premises so promising is that they're all DIRECTLY related to the kaiju, it's much easier to invest the audience in them when their plotlines are so interwoven with the big monster action
Instead this movie fucked everything and tried to juggle all of the characters, fleshing out none of them. Fucking waaaaste

Well it's not easy to figure out how exactly creatures like Godzilla and King Ghidorah would fight against each other, especially when they aren't limited like the previous movies.

Overall while I didn't dislike the movie as a whole I came away pretty disappointed with it. Grew up loving Godzilla movies and watched them all as a kid, really liked g14 but recognized it had flaws, and then waited 5 years for this one only for it to be worse.
I didn't even love Shin Godzilla either desu. Thought it had a great first half and that the plot and satire shits itself after Shinny first goes into a coma. Am I just jaded

To be honest, I think that we'd be better off if we stuck with Godzilla and Kong as the main monsters. Mothra can hypothetically 'get her own film', but I don't think it'd draw crowds like Godzilla and Kong did. It's a comparable situation to the Incredible Hulk movies, the character just didn't work on its own.

Mothra is best as a support character. Have her show up in Godzilla and Kong movies. Kong and Mothra together is a combination we haven't seen before, maybe that can serve as a Mothra spinoff movie - like Thor Ragnarok did for Hulk.

Yeah that's the problem with Mothra-- her movies were wildly popular in Japan but they were also very cheap to make. Just have the first half be a group of people come across a Mothra egg and they connive and backstab each other to try and get it for themselves. Then Mothra hatches and the rest of the film is about the remaining characters attempting to survive the result of their hubris, monster action, etc

I actually found myself pretty underwhelmed by the score. The themes for the main kaiju are pretty fantastic renditions, other than Rodan who for some reason didn't bring back his great original theme song. The actual original parts of the score were pretty forgettable to me, actually find myself preferring Desplat's G14 score.
Also I wish they fully played the Godzilla March in the scene where all the jets are attacking Ghidorah in the finale. Would've been fucking kino

Ehhhh, on the face of it its too similar to the premise of Skull Island. Maybe instead we go even further back into the past, during the last time the Kaiju roamed the Earth. A movie not about Mothra waking up to a world inhabited by humans, but instead about Mothra (as her 'character arc') coming to learn that all these humans depending on her all the time and worshiping her isn't all that great, and maybe it's time to go to sleep.

Like, just as a hypothetically, have the human plot be an 'Infant Island' civilization locked in a war with let's say the Seatopian civilization, and Mothra being used as a weapon in that conflict by the more corrupt of her worshipers. We see a lot of kaiju movies set in the modern era, and it'd be a nice change of pace to have kaiju movies set in the bronze/iron age. Just a thought.

Point is, any Mothra movie needs to really mix it up. It can't just be 'Mothra needs to save the day because Godzilla is on his vacation' or something.

Odo Island in the original 1954, but it's implied that Odo Island just had a god they called 'Gojira' and the irradiated mutant happened to be identified as that god; and thus that name was applied.

If you wanted to make a "realistic" Godzilla movie the only way to do it is to have Godzilla be the only monster, which is the attitude they had in '98 and everyone hated that movie. Especially because "realistic" also meant making the monster a lot smaller and whimpier with no powers. The new movies have fully embraced the Showa and Heisei films for inspiration and aren't running away from the cosmic and supernatural elements.

It'll be cool if they hint that Mothra protected Kong after his parents died.

I dunno. For everything that was bad about the Urobutcher anime (and there is A LOT), the way the aliens were handled in that was pretty good.

True. Kong being set in the 1970s really helped set it apart from Godzilla, and setting Mothra in a completely different era could make for a really interesting and mythological feeling movie. It also means they don't have to figure out why Godzilla is on vacation while Mothra fights a B-list villain.

Mechagodzilla 'should' happen, but it shouldn't happen too soon. Monsterverse needs to set up its Thanos FIRST - and that's Destroyah or Space Godzilla. Either or. My complaint against Mechagodzilla is purely from his overuse, and Toho/Legendary needs to stop focusing on low hanging fruit.

Like Ghidorah is an alien kaiju. Explore that a bit. What does it mean that another planet that has life also has kaiju? Do all planets with life have kaiju? Is this some sort of 'natural order' in the universe? Yeah, maybe space aliens invading earth might be a bit campy, but you could have stuff like Hedorah or Gigan being a von numman machine from an unknown civilization that 'enslaved' its kaiju or something. Then, as a subplot, have the mechagodzilla project be in development and have the movie raise the question about whether Mechagodzilla is an example of humanity doing the exact same thing on its planet. To keep with the enviromentalist message, Mechagodzilla and Hedorah/Gigan become symbols of overindustrialization and the complete conquest of nature.

The one gripe about Space Godzilla is that he's, and there's no denying this, a Godzilla clone. I really like Space Godzilla's crystaline theme and his weird blue-rainbow color scheme, but in order to bring him to the big screen there needs to be more done to distinguish him from Godzilla's design. And origin-wise, have Space Godzilla be more an example of convergent evolution than being out-and-out related.

Although I have a sneaking suspicion that Tywin is going to combine Godzilla's DNA with Ghidorah's DNA, and from tthat get Space Godzilla.

Didn't 2014 have a skeleton Of one if Godzilla's ancestors where they found the MUTOs? I'm sure they could go the Kiryu route to build Mecha G. The Legendary verse does seem to be somewhat ahead of us tech wise. Though I'd hope to see Moguera first to sort of demonstrate tech development.

It has flaws, but it's overall a fine hesei era movie on hollywood steroids.
There are some instances of cringy marvel humor (the worst one happening as they learn Ghidorah's name) nand action tends to cut to humans a tad too much. However, Kaijus were amazing and filled with personality, action is constant compared to '14, references to classic Goji lore are scattered everywhere and human side, while generally shit, has one kino moment

Where will they go after GvK? It’d be cool as fuck to see some solo monster movies that’ll build the shit out of the MV. I definitely wanna see one with like a sea monster or something, maybe even remake old creature features like the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms or The Giant Claw.

While I love the Kaiju rumble in KOTM, I feel like the solo films should stay kind of grounded and in a fashion similar to 2014. I really love how 2014 actually felt like it had alot of weight and scale to it, mostly because it’s meant to be from the perspective of humans. It made the MUTO kills so much more impactful. Meanwhile the fights in KOTM are pretty in your face with wide shots and closeups and shit since they moved away from the human perspective a bit, but it makes alot more sense to do that here since it’s a monster slugfest. To put it simply, solo films should be from the human perspective, while the slugfest films should be shot like KOTM.

This movie is the inverse of 1998 Godzilla. They did a fantastic job with all the Kaiju stuff and fanservice to Toho, and respected the lore. But the writing and all the characters were fucking embarrassing. 1998 Godzilla scuffed all the monster stuff but at least it had a coherent plot and decently fleshed out characters.
