His only "character development" happens when he's so perfect in the past that his faggy loser family stops being faggy losers. Back to the Future would be so much more interesting if Marty had to adapt to his surroundings and man up to escape his predicament. He should have chickened out when the Libyans attacked Doc, and then in the past grown a backbone, showing back up to prevent Doc from being killed. Marty is a flat note of a main character.

Because the character growth in the first one is not Marty's, it is his parent's character growth that mattered. Its actual a clever use of time travel to make the main character be the source of his own parents character development at his age, part of what makes the movie so enjoyable.

Seeing his dad do this has a slight impact on Marty at the end of the film, when his Father is rich in his creative pursuits with writing, spurring Marty to continue his pursuits with music.
