Ice wasn't that big a factor in any of the wars or events in the South and Dany, despite invading in season 7, didn't really do much of anything, then quickly came south again and killed a lot of people but got killed and that's it. There wasn't much ice vs fire and neither lasted all that long.

Honestly, Jon Snow should have been Ned and Ashara Dayne's bastard son. He could have ended up becoming the Sword of the Morning and wielding Dawn during the Great War to hold off the Long Night. Sounds a bit corny maybe, but could have been good if done well. It also ties him more to the White Walker storyline, which is where he belongs, whereas the Targaryen lineage ties him to the political plot, which he's never been a part of, it feels like he's getting yanked in a random direction.
