Did he though? This movie felt like a perfect example of throwing out symbolic visuals to see what sticks. Just because you do the same thing multiple times in a movie, like all the hand stuff, doesn't mean it's actually deep.

It does look good, but just because Yea Forums can make a kino-collage of screenshots doesn't mean the movie's good

Yes, the mother used to fuck both the brothers and no, he didn't die at the end. In the original screenplay there was a scene after he got his hands cut off that had Julian being fed by the Thai prostitute.
Even Refn said he didn't really know what the film was about. I like the movie because of the mood it sets, the cinematography is PERFECT and the acting is pretty good, but the underlying themes are just not too clear for me. I know there are pieces of interesting concepts at work, they are just not placed together in a very cohesive way.

If you really want to know more about Only God Forgives you should watch MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN. It's a documentary directed by Refn's wife about the filming process of OGF and how his family handles having a famous director as a father and husband.

I personally really like most of his films, I think he really felt the pressure after Drive and slipped a little bit, but he still has a lot of filmaking power left in him. I would even go as far as saying he hasn't made his best film yet.

What don't you like about drive? I think as far as plot goes it's fairly boring but the characters and cinematography do it for me, I was also really surpriesd with what they did with the love interests BF. I thought they were gonna get into a fight and shit and I definitely wasn't expecting him getting straight up killed.

My only gripe is how cheesy the violence was when he kills people in the motel.

Something about not being able to please his mother even when he was a kid. She says she never understood him, I think thats the core of the movie. Him loving his mom but hating himself because of her. And then he has some weird sexual hangup cause of that. At the end he gets his hands cut off and presumably feels redeemed/forgiven for uhh, doing crimes on her behalf.

the fight scene was cool

It's an admission of Refn of his issues with his mother who was overly affectionate with him and never let him feel as if he grew up so he only found himself in relationships with prostitutes as a result and was never able to fully love someone and as a result possibly did some bad stuff in the past (which we're not shown in the movie) and the policeman chief is a representation of God's judgement, and that no matter how tough or survivalist you think you are, God's gonna fuck you up in the end.
