Spanish 80's films about troubled teens in the age of the heroin boom in Spain are some of the grittiest, most realistic films out there, there is a ton of them. Who cares? I don't think the movie is deep at all, that doesn't stop me to appreciate the great atmosphere. It does a great job to capture those teenagehood feels.
The director's cut is shit though, I agree on that.

He's a really sloppy director who doesn't get enough coverage with multiple takes to properly edit his movies, which is fine when its a smaller scale, but when it starts turning into the massive spectacle he loves those little problems just get more and more obvious too me until I'm picking the movie apart because I gave up caring about anything that's happening early in the second act.
