>I read books without actually understanding them just so I can say that I read them and sound smart to other people: The image
They all look like trash
Most of these are pseudcore or emo nihilist realism garbage
>The Culture of Critique not listed
cringe
>Lolita
Why is this book actually good outside of pedophiles feeling validated by it?
>realism is bad
Found the capeshitter
this is the definition of soulless. its like people who list the obvious classics (citizen kane, breathless, 2001, casablanca etc.) as their favorite movies suspiciously without any indication of personal taste or belief system
because it's good writing, have sex
Can I get some soul recommendations please
It takes no skill, it says nothing. Stuff like C&P is seen as the height of realism because a religious person wrote it and transferred meaning behind the realism. Legitimate realism is just worthless shit, see praust
what are some good stream of consciousness romantic literature?
i'm sick of bookfags obsession with sociologically and politically "important" trite. i want expressionism.
the opening chapter is a microcosm of the whole book, being that of an unreliable narrator coaxing you with his flowery language to empathize with his rationalizations. if a person has any literary-aesthetic sense at all, humbert is going to make them swoon right from the beginning
ok so it uses flowery wording to justify something incredibly basal and immoral, I can see why pseuds love it
For poetry, see george herbert.
These are all fiction, and outside of what I read in school, I don't read fiction. I stick to history/biographies and other stuff from smaller college presses.
Read philosophy if you want substantial writing that isn’t fiction (in the normal sense)
What are are some books about death being inevitable and life is worthless, bros?

Most of those books are fairly cut and dry. You don't have to be a genius to understand what a book is mostly saying. Even if you don't, that's what discussion and speculation are for. Lose the superiority complex.
Nabokov was 100% a pedophile. People totally misinterpret that book as a monster being able to win you over with words, but in truth the writing is just that of a sociopath who wants you to sympathise with the main character. Nabokov was abused sexually as a child, and we can see this obsession with child sex and marriage in even his earliest works. Why would a man repeatedly write about and defend something in all his books, if he didn’t have sympathy with it? He was a pedophile, and people cope with this by pretending lolita is an anti pedophilia novel when it isn’t.
what exactly about art in general or lolita in particular necessitates that they be [justifying] the concepts they explore? conflating the aesthetic function of a work with its moral function makes both meaningless. the pseud here is the one who self-imposes tired moralizing restrictions that inhibit exploration of the range of human experience, not that one that inquires of human experience
>I can't read.
t.roastie
No she didn't.
>it’s an incel wants to fuck kids episode
shocker
>tired moralising
literally what the pseuds who love this shit are doing though
using intellectualism and naturalism to elevate the basal, they are themselves fundamentally taking a moral standpoint
If you read books for pleasure you are a pseud, there's no two ways about it.
>infinite jest is #1
Wow I'm shocked.
it's from a survey. obviously the common denominators are going to end up on top
I see Yea Forums copied our list.

based chad, why read when you can watch movies and literally every worthy book has been made into a movie already
Concession accepted
>fiction

The best proof this is trash is the Bible in the ranking. It's pure trash, it's unreadable.
I get the muh history muh Christian culture muh Jesus but the book in itself is garbage and anyone saying people should read it is a retard
Why do you think the book is garbage?
It’s incredibly important if you want to understand the west at all
>the bible not at #1
its good to read it to understand the many cultural reference we have from it in our language for example. also it shaped western morality greatly. not to mention the old testament is based in many ways. its not entertaining or beautifully written but whatever
wow. Yea Forums has shit taste.

If you think the Bible is a must read you're probably a fucking redneck, or a Louisiana nigger. It's neither a good story nor a good book. It's too heavy, and yes incels, it's unreadable. Because it's some night stories for teenagers to keep you awake thinking about how you'll end up dead in a car crash if you don't selflessly pray hard enough
It's worse than Harry potter (cue the pasta) and meme books like Salinger's
