But the Holy Grail of Goggins' filmography remains unseen: the original pilot film for Rectify.

This, not Justified, was going to be Goggins' big follow up to The Shield.

The original version of Rectify was less soap soap opera drama and more highbrow: basically Bartelby the Scribner and Being There.

Goggins plays a dull, boring dude who no one but his sister cares about. He gets framed for a murder and spends twenty years in jail, not caring as far as being apathetic and being a pussy who the fates use and abuse. His sister manages to get DNA evidence that gets him released/his conviction tossed and name cleared.

The pilot movie has him adjusting to the outside life and moving in with his sister, who's husband and children have fed a completely different version of who Walt was and chalk up his boringness and passive nature as trauma from losing twenty years of his life for a crime he didn't commit. Meanwhile you have all sorts of vultures trying to exploit Walt and Walt's character's general apathy about EVERYTHING causing him to be drawing into various scenarios of people trying to exploit him and his story for their own greed/glory.

The pilot film was pitched to AMC but they opted to make Breaking Bad instead. By the time Sundance Channel showed interest, Goggins was locked down with Justified and they had to make a brand new pilot, which led to them making it more soap opera like and instead of being artsy (Bartleby the Scribner meets Being There), it became more ripped from the headlines drawing details from the West Memphis Three case, with the character being aged down and becoming more brooding and proactive/emotional.

HBO was so fucking based by not trying to drag the series out. So good. Other series are finally starting to take the hint. Broad City reached a good conclusion. But this show was perfect. Longer, single narratives are better. Kill Bill is much better as a solid piece so you don't get brainlets complaining about an action drop off in volume 2. I hope the new show is good as fuck and only one season. That's how True Detective should've been and HBO got fucked because they were greedy. They didn't drag it out as much as it was filmed pretty much with a sweatshop style schedule where they did all 18 episodes at once and McBride basically told HBO that they could run it all at once or in two season installments (with episode 8 as a season finale cliffhanger).

I think McBride truly saw ahead of time, the SJW hate mob that would attack the show given its premise, which is why he filmed the entire show all at once and refused to shoot any additional episodes or change anything, due to the season one backlash, because he knew he was playing with fire and that HBO would rape his creative vision at the first sound of SJW screeching at the series.

For the first couple episodes there were the complaints about how the show's protagonists are a couple of privileged white men conspiring to ruin the life of a successful black woman. People who were bothered by that promptly dropped the show and forgot about it though.

The first season is about how at a southern school, two white men get denied a promotion in favor of a carpetbagger black SJW woman who forces them to work as a subordinates to her in their current position.

The two men basically spend all of season one coming up with increasingly complicated schemes designed to ruin her good name, and get her fired so one or both of them can take her job. With them burning down her house (complete with photo of her with Obama being burnt and McBride's character stealing her valuable jewelry to pay for his daughter's horse riding lessons) as an added fuck you in the second episodes.

SJWs hated the show from day one and all of the major TV sites (which are crawling with SJW scum) basically spent every review shitting on it and claiming it was racist and sexist and that it was glorifying toxic masculinity and McBride was pandering to the Trump/alt right crowd by producing a show all about Southern "good old boys" putting a strong independent black woman through hell for being uppity and interfering with the white privilege of Lee and Gamby.

Ironically, it didn't kill the show's ratings and the people who watched it, mainly did so because of the homoerotic relationship between Lee an Gamby and how the second half ended up becoming a textbook case of bros before hos.

To be fair, Goggins does include a huge amount of faggotry in his acting. Shane Vendrell, Boyd Crowder, and Lee Russell all had a large amount of homosexual subtext to them and the way Goggins interacted with his costars.

There's a reason why people call Shield a gay harem show and why the line "we dug coal together" on Justified became a meme, as far as being a euphemism for the fact that Boyd and Rayland sexually experimented with each other as young men and is dropped by the two whenever they go out of their way to show mercy or an act of kindness towards the other

To be fair, it's looking like it's going to be a sympathetic take on the concept of modern TV televangelism.

It's good but a pale shadow of what it could have been had they stuck to the original high concept notion of the main character being a cipher who everyone projects on and who's ultimately is a catalyst for stories about other people.

The main actor does brooding OK and the show does go into some major dark places, especially in relations to a change from the Goggins pilot (in the Goggins pilot he's 100% exonerated, but in the series, the main character is let go pending possible retrial and not 100% exonerated) and the idea of the main character being radically changed from his experience in prison. It's good but, as I said, the showrunner basically went from making a kino arthouse show to a series that could have aired on the CW for 5-7 seasons had he toned down the cursing and nudity.
