All of the stuff with Jane Franklin really happened. The Terror was exceptionally well researched.

Incidentally, the explorer who lead the first search for the Franklin Expedition, John Rae, concluded via forensic investigation and Inuit testimony that the Franklin party broke down around King William Land (now known as an island) and moved south, succumbing to starvation and resorting to cannibalism. He wrote to the Admiralty explaining his findings, and they published his letter to the press and he was villified back home. Dickens himself, on behalf of Jane Franklin, wrote essays basically saying it was all bullshit and that good Englishmen would never do shit like that.

We now know that basically everything Rae found was correct.

Good point. The Hickey-Gibson fling. Really Hickey is using Gibson as an informant but that user hasn't finished the series so he think it's a "gay love story" which is interesting. The only other instance of something like this is between Bridgens and Peglar, where a relationship or a former relationship is somewhat implid. In the book they were former lovers before the expedition but stayed as close friends during the ordeal.
