It's likely that funding was pulled out during production after internet mockery and backlash too, but on the whole it's unlikely that they secured anything near that $30M+ that they'd need to really produce anything of scale. And on that note, it means it's likely Netflix was able to secure distribution for dirt cheap because the show would need to pay investors back ASAP.

Netflix is "broke" in the sense that they actually make very little profit, and literally everything they have is spent chewing through content deals just to keep people on the platform at all.

Yeah current sources say they're carrying about $12.3B in long-term debt, they just did a big cap raise not too long ago for about $2B more. Most all of that money goes to content acquisitions, but they claim it goes into other investments and stuff too. The interest on their debt alone is like $150M per quarter, and they're telling investors they plan to continue to raise debt.

So basically 100% of what they spend to acquire and license content to stream is all borrowed money, they don't make any actual profit to pay down or offset that debt, which is why they need to cut shows, buy cheap shit like this Witcher show, and raise their pricing.

Sort of, the difference is Amazon is diversified and has been buying up other companies that actually are profitable, and then drowning them in cash to make them even more so (ex. Twitch). That combined with how they are able to invest intelligently and cost-cut while still delivering the most reliable and diverse internet next-day marketplace option means that they can remain afloat even as they burn billions expanding.

Will it crash? Most likely, but it's hard to see what will fail first. For Netflix, it's 100% going to fail once Disney+ and other streaming services start taking root and offering their own content, but I can't quite say for Amazon. I haven't looked into their finances or what they're doing enough to know what might be their weak point.

150 million per quarter in interest is not really that much for Netflix, they are almost up to 150 million subscribers worldwide. Though i agree that either they have to scale way back in their licensing and production numbers(they wont) or they are going to crash hard once Disney+ launches at the end of the year. They cant carry a debt that large forever since their subscribers numbers are still growing but its slowing down considerably and shareholders want infinite growth in a market thats about to be super saturated.
