I view those leaks as plausible simply because I don't think Kurtzman understand what you just said. Romulus is one planet out of dozens or hundreds. The Romulan Star Empire is massive. The loss of their homeworld would hurt but it wouldn't be the end, not by a long shot. They wouldn't need to go full Syrian Refugees and land on Vulcan by the millions.

i just remembered after posting that one of the big differences is between not doing enough to prevent/respond to a famine and actively causing a famine then making it worse.
